This report details the functionality and operational benefits of MineWare s Argus Shovel Monitoring system. Meeting the high production demands of open pit mining operations, Argus is an advanced monitoring system that addresses key issues of managing shovel payload, real-time truck loading, operator performance, and machine positioning. Capable of monitoring any electric shovel on the market, Argus provides sophisticated operator tools on-board the shovel and provides management teams with real-time information for targeted management of shovel operations. The core functional areas of Argus outlined throughout this report include: 1. Production monitoring and operator feedback including real-time and accurate information on dipper-by-dipper loads and also total load per dump truck 2. Shovel guidance to allow for accurate reconciliation of actual versus planned machine work location 3. Structural logging capacity to allow for establishing relationships between productivity and duty 4. Integrated CCTV camera system for operator feedback and recording 5. Reporting system and data visualisation 6. Integration and interfacing Please note that Argus is not a fleet management or truck dispatch system. Argus has been developed to complement a fleet management system by providing comprehensive and accurate shovel performance data and sophisticated shovel operator feedback. Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 4

2 PRODUCTION MONITORING Argus is a fully-featured shovel production monitoring system that calculates and stores a significant suite of data including: 1. Cycle-by-cycle key performance indicators, including: a. Payload b. Cycle time c. Cycle component time (e.g. fill, swing, return) d. Swing angles e. Wait on truck time f. Digability g. Cumulative stress/duty index h. GPS machine and dipper tooth location 2. Time usage modelling, delay tracking, clean-up work tracking, and operator logons 3. Real-time truck loading data Production information is stored in a local SQL database on-board the shovel and synchronised back to the mine office for reporting and data analysis purposes. Most KPI and other metrics are available for viewing by the operator on-board the machine. The time usage and activity tracking system is sophisticated and allows for complex time usage models and classifications to be set up. 2.1 Payload calculation A key function of the Argus system is the calculation of dipper payload. To achieve this accurately and reliably, Argus uses a strain gauge based calculation system. This system weighs the full dipper during the period between the end of fill and start of dump components of the shovel cycle. Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 5

In addition to its inherent accuracy advantages, the key benefits of this system versus the more traditional electrical model approach to load calculation are provided in the following table: Strain Gauge (Argus) Can Auto-tare Redundant strain gauges Self-calibrating Electrical Model Significant rotating equipment effects Significant calibration required Difficult to maintain No rotating equipment effects Handles dipper/bucket changes Simple to maintain 2.2 Truck loading feedback Argus incorporates an accurate truck identification system which allows for real-time recognition and calculation of truck payload as the shovel loads the truck. This feedback can assist operators in ensuring they get the right load for the capacity of the truck. There are significant production and cost benefits in ensuring trucks are consistently loaded correctly, including: 1. Reduced opportunity cost by avoiding under-loading trucks 2. Reduced truck structural and component damage through avoiding overloading 3. Extended tyre life Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 6

This feedback is provided in real-time to the operator as seen on the upper section of the screen shot below: Using this truck load data, Argus calculates a truck compliance measure which is the percentage of load in a truck relative to the rated load. This information is provided to the operator in real-time and is available through the reporting system (see section 6.1.1). Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 7

3 GPS AND MACHINE GUIDANCE Argus provides high precision GPS location for real-time machine position feedback to the operator. Positional information is integrated with 3D mine plans produced by third party design software packages (including Vulcan). The shovel operator is provided with feedback showing where the shovel is operating relative to the plan. Argus couples GPS information with hoist and crowd positional information which allows for calculation of both the shovel position and also the tooth position. This information is presented in real-time to the operator to assist in maintaining planned pad height and grade. Also included for this purpose are shovel pitch and roll sensors which can further assist the operator for construction of ramps. Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 8

4 STRUCTURAL MONITORING The Argus system includes four strain gauges which are capable of performing basic structural monitoring comparisons and providing operator feedback of both boom jacking and swing impact events. This information is tagged to shovel cycles and can be differentiated by operator to assist with operator training programs. Each gauge is used to calculate a cumulative fatigue measure for each cycle completed which can provide useful information regarding the roughness of particular operators and/or operational techniques. Argus is also capable of accepting integrated structural analysis data from dedicated third-party structural analysis systems. 5 SAFETY CAMERAS Argus allows for full integration of CCTV cameras for the purposes of operator viewing, on-board video recording, and remote (off-board) viewing. This integration removes the need for an additional dedicated camera screen in the operator cab. Multiple cameras can be viewed and stored by Argus, including cameras with full PTZ control. An example of the operator feedback screen showing integrated cameras is provided below: Argus Shovel Monitor functional overview 9

Argus is supported by MineWare s purpose-developed data and video propagation software. This software was designed to meet the operating conditions of cameras installed on a mine site and accessed through site wireless network systems. The propagation software minimises the data traffic incurred by viewing in-pit video streams by ensuring connections are only maintained on demand and that no more than one connection stream per camera is used. Coupled with MineWare s mroc Desktop viewing software, it also allows for user access and the implementation of security controls. 6 REPORTING & DATA ACCESS Argus provides multiple mechanisms for office users to access and view data collected from a shovel: 1. A web based reporting system 2. A web based data dump system 3. An SQL database application programming interface (API) 4. Live data viewing through mroc Desktop The data dump system allows for users to download cycle-by-cycle and activity records for analysis in applications such as Microsoft Excel. By specifying a shovel and a timeperiod, all cycle metrics can be easily downloaded and analysed on demand. The database API provides a managed and open means through which third party systems can gather data and information from the MineWare Argus database. This allows other applications to build on Argus functionality or provides access to data for uploading into consolidated data warehouses.
