Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) The Council on Education for Public Health is the accrediting body for schools and programs of public health. 6

Undergraduate Public Health Education n IOM recommendation: all undergraduates should have access to education in public health. n Currently, approximately 22 accredited SPH offer at least one undergraduate course in PH n Approximately 15 accredited SPH offer undergraduate degrees in PH 8
Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? IOM, 2003 The committee recommends that: n All medical students receive basic public health training in the population-based prevention approaches to health; n Serious efforts be undertaken by academic health centers to provide joint classes and clinical training in public health and medicine; and n A significant proportion of medical school graduates should be fully trained in the ecological approach to public health at the MPH level 9

n Each year, about 15% of the approximately 6,500 graduates from accredited SPH already have an MD degree about 1,000 per year. n Only about 370 preventive medicine residency positions are available each year. 11
