3 Background and Need The need for prevention, at the individual and population level, has never been greater or more urgent. care costs escalate, as the burden of chronic conditions increases, health disparities persist, and our population collectively ages. Changes in the health care systems, from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), create requirements for accountability of entire patient populations, and new models for population-based practice require knowledge and skills in population health, interventions that impact broad determinants of health, teamwork among many different health care and public health professionals, all linked to community resources. We utilized an innovative and collaborative approach to create an interdisciplinary online certificate of graduate study in public health, with the University of Vermont Graduate College, College of Medicine, and Continuing Education. Methods Research funded by a cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to the UVM College of Medicine identified a high level of interest in public health and health policy courses, certificate and MPH programs, especially offered as part of the medical curriculum. Similar needs and interests were identified in community and non-profit agencies and the Vermont Department of.
