1 2 Westwood Public Library Westwood, Massachusetts Finegold Alexander has designed a 37,000 SF two-story new library for the town of Westwood. The design creates a series of stepped gable end pavilions that break down the massing to complement the scale of the historic community. The ground floor includes a large childrens library, public meeting spaces, a gallery, and library staff and tech services. The upper floor is an open plan for the adult collection, with a dedicated area for Young Adult, tweens and teens. The pavilion form creates a series of reading nooks and crannies, and glass walls create views out to the landscape and surrounding neighborhood. State of the art technology is incorporated throughout the library. The library creates a civic presence in a historic setting, and is expected to achieve LEED Silver Certification.

9 6 Holyoke Public Library Holyoke, Massachusetts Built in 1902, the Greek Revival library is situated in a park and has served Holyoke for generations. To extend the life of this valued member of the community, we designed a revitalized historic core wedded to a striking modern addition that more than doubles the size of the existing library. All new systems, state-of-the-art technology and enhanced program spaces serve a wide variety of users. A grand new stair knits the old and new and encourages interaction and engagement. The addition creates a new main entry, and the park has been restored to its original grandeur. The result is a civic resource that is welcoming, accessible, and open, and expands a historically significant building into the 21st century for future generations of Holyoke patrons. This project was designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification.

10 Christa McAuliffe Branch Library Framingham, Massachusetts Finegold Alexander designed this new, 17,000 square foot facility for the second busiest public library in the commonwealth. The design is inspired by the spirit of Christa McAuliffe, who grew up in Framingham and who was participating in NASA s first Teacher in Space project when the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster occurred. The design creates a soaring roof in the shape of a wing that lifts over the main reading areas for adults and children. The library features a large open floor plan that allows for flexibility in adapting to future trends in library usage and space plan modifications. Located at the highest point of its wooded site, the new Christa McAuliffe Branch Library embraces a state-of-the-art sustainable design approach with a LEED Gold certification target.
11 12 Baker Library, Harvard Business School Cambridge, Massachusetts Baker Library is the largest business library in the world, containing more than 600,000 volumes and over 7,000 active periodicals, as well as an extensive archival collection. Built in 1927, Baker Library is the focal point of the business school campus. Designed as part of the original campus plan by McKim Mead and White, the library represents the collegiate Georgian style with which Harvard University and Harvard Business School are usually associated. The library has been expanded and Finegold Alexander contributed to the prestigious project team, led by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, as preservation architect. The firm ensured that the expansion, renovation and preservation of Baker Library was planned and executed perfectly for the distinguished historic structure.
9 14 Hingham Public Library Hingham, Massachusetts When the 27,000 sf Hingham Public Library opened in 1966, no one could have foreseen how rapidly the library would grow, or how soon all of the space originally expected to be available for later expansion would be entirely exhausted. Faced with overcrowding and accommodating future information needs, the library commissioned Finegold Alexander to renovate and alter the existing library building to create a modern public library. The design connects the library to the adjacent 18,000 sf Town Hall building, which was acquired to provide additional library space, by creating glass enclosed corridors at two sides of the buildings. The links provide space for a bright atrium area and cafe. The area between the glass corridors is now a welcoming, landscaped outdoor courtyard.
15 Newburyport Public Library Newburyport, Massachusetts The Newburyport Public Library is located in a Federalist mansion that once hosted George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Benedict Arnold. Originally built in 1771, the building was converted to a library and then expanded in 1881. through Finegold Alexander s renovation and addition, the library was doubled in size and now offers state-of-the-art space for research, reading, public meetings and a diverse range of collections. The expansion relocated heavy uses to the addition, while the older sections were repaired and are used for meeting spaces, computer areas and special collections.
17 18 Wright Memorial Library Duxbury, Massachusetts The 1907 Wright Library is Duxbury s finest example of Classical Revival architecture. The town chose the prominent architect Joseph Everett Chandler, who also designed the Kingston and Sandwich libraries. A 1967 addition to the Wright Building provided a modernist design to accompany the original building. The Wright Building was closed to the public in 1997. It than became part of the school complex (after being replaced by a new library) and was used for education related purposes by several organizations. Finegold Alexander s assesment of the building evolved to provide new quarters for the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society and a teen center for the town. The completed building features restored interior plaster, wood work, other historic finishes, new code compliant systems and universal access.
