2 Enterprise Managed Print Solution WHITE PAPER 2 Enterprise Managed Print Solution Introduction What is Printer Management? Printer management is the process of monitoring the status of a printer through a remote network connection. This is a valuable process for an IT manager who must manage a distributed system of network printers over an entire enterprise. The types of printer information that an IT manager must manage include the following: Printer Faults (Errors) Toner status Print job statistics Monthly usage statistics Firmware version Printer identification Role based security. What is 2 Enterprise Managed Print Solution? 2 Enterprise Managed Print Solution is a distributed printer management solution that provides the tools and access needed by IT departments to manage enterprise printer fleets. By using the advantage of web service technology, SAMSUNG engineers have created a printer management application that can communicate with printers through many layers of network obstacles. Unlike SNMP, web service requests are carried by HTTP through firewalls and reach the printers throughout the enterprise network. The Samsung enterprise printers include the Web Service Remote Management (WS-RM) Agent, which allows the printers to interpret the web service requests and to respond by sending the requested information. 2 Enterprise receives the requested printer information and uses this information to create reports and status messages for the entire printer fleet.

2 Enterprise The features provided by 2 Enterprise include the following: Supply Fault Messages General Fault Messages Remaining Toner Level Toner Change History Print Job Statistics Fault Type Usage Comparison Total Amount of Usage Monthly Usage Report Service Continuity Rate Supplies Provision Rate Report by Fault Type Usage & Billing (Region) Usage & Billing(Printer) Firmware F/W Registration Distribution Result Administrator Printer Registration Model User Fault Billing Group Budget. Overview 2 2 Enterprise is the latest version of the Samsung integrated printer management solution for controlling distributed printers in an enterprise environment. 2 Enterprise uses a web application to communicate with an embedded web service located on the digital printer. This web service is called WS-RM v1.0 (Web Service Remote Management) and is a proprietary application created by the Samsung Software Center. The Samsung digital printers are capable of delivering real-time error messages, consumable status, usage data, billing data, and reports. From any browser, 2 Enterprise allows you to receive real-time digital printer information, and it allows you to configure the user and device setting to match your enterprise requirements. 2 Enterprise Main Screen: 2

CounThru 2 Enterprise Information flows through the CounThru 2 Enterprise system from the digital printers to the CounThru 2 Enterprise servers. These servers can be located at the enterprise headquarters (HQ) or a service center. CounThru 2 Enterprise can send alerts through email and text messaging. CounThru 2 Enterprise can also generate status, usage, and billing reports. CounThru 2 Enterprise Model: Real-time status Real-time status Real-time status Network Real-time status Status Checking Real-time status Server Monitoring S i E-mail, SMS (text) Alarms /M i t Billing AS User Role CounThru 2 Enterprise Access CounThru 2 Enterprise provides access through a role-based security process. The CounThru 2 Enterprise role types are Administrator and User. Administrator Role A User role allows access to the basic CounThru 2 Enterprise tools and features. These tools and features allow users to view the status of the enterprise printer fleet, install printer drivers, and monitor printer usage. An Administrator role allows access to the Administrator tools. The Administrator tools provide network level information and features. This role allows personnel to provide general service, replace consumables, or clear errors requiring a technician. Subcontractors or special management companies can also use this role for managing leased equipment or for maintaining an enterprise printer fleet. 3

The W3C defines a web service as: A service that provides a standard means of interoperating between different software applications, running on a variety of platforms and/or frameworks. Web services are characterized by their great interoperability and extensibility, as well as their machine-usable descriptions thanks to the use of XML. They can be combined in a loosely coupled way in order to achieve complex operations. Programs providing simple services can interact with each other in order to deliver sophisticated added-value services. So the key elements of a web service are: It can run on any platform or framework by using http It is easily interpreted by machines because the commands are written in XML It can combine multiple simple operations to execute complex operations It can deliver sophisticated added-value services. 5

2 Enterprise 2 Enterprise Communication Interface 2 Enterprise server communicates with the digital printers by using the proprietary WS-RM v1.0 protocol created by Samsung Software Lab and by using SNMP (for a few OEM printers). The following is a diagram of the WS-RM protocol: SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Future versions of 2 Enterprise will allow you to optionally use SNMP to manage both Samsung and non-samsung printers over TCP/IP. 6

2 Enterprise 2 Enterprise Protocol Stack The following diagram displays the 2 Enterprise protocol stack layers: Printer Management Features 2 Enterprise printer management features are easily accessed through a userfriendly GUI. Printer Status Feature 2 Enterprise allows you to view detailed information regarding the overall printer fleet status by region, branch and printer in realtime.
