Physical Therapy Technician/Assistant CIP 2010: A program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of a physical therapist, to implement physical therapy treatment care plans, train patients, conduct treatment interventions, use equipment, and observe and record patient progress. Includes instruction in applied anatomy and physiology, applied kinesiology, principles and procedures of physical therapy, basic neurology and orthopedics, physical therapy modalities, documentation skills, psychosocial aspects of health care, wound and injury care, electrotherapy, working with orthotics and prostheses, and personal and professional ethics. Target Occupations Physical Therapist Assistants Physical Therapist Aides Based on EMSI crosswalk of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes with Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes as published by the U.S. Department of Education. In 2013, the number of physical therapy assistant jobs in the target occupations in the Greater Bay Area totaled 1,452. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects the total number of positions to increase by 18.7% from 2013 to 2023. Regional openings in 2012, which included created jobs and turnover, totaled 47. Completions in physical therapy assistant programs totaled 19 from two institutions, with an additional 494 completions from a related program- Health Services/Allied Health/Heath Sciences. The related program is linked to multiple occupations and not all those who complete the program will enter the target occupations indicated in this report. Currently, the Health Services/Allied Health/Heath Sciences program is offered at California State University- East Bay, San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, Dominican University of California, Contra Costa College, and University of San Francisco. The following table represents a regional industry breakdown of the number of physical therapist assistants employed, the percentage of physical therapist assistants jobs employed by industry and the percentage physical therapist assistants jobs represent within all jobs by each industry. While offices of physical, physical and speech therapists, and audiologists employed just over a third (37.3%) of all regional physical therapy assistants in 2013, physical therapy assistants and its related occupations represent nearly 8% of the total jobs in that industry. Data Sources This report uses employment data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and includes self-employed workers who count their self-employed work as their primary source of income.
