Julie Folan is a police officer who rides one of Ireland s ten police horses every day. Julie spends most of her time riding around Dublin s city centre, but also works in other parts of the country. Julie comes from England but works as a police officer in Ireland. She has lived in Dublin for 16 years. She loved riding horses when she was younger, and she became a police officer four years ago. For the last two years Julie has ridden a horse called Dilis. It s important to know your horse, says Julie. Dilis loves children but he s afraid of plastic bags. People in Dublin often say hello to him and many kids know his name. When Julie isn t riding Dilis, she feeds and grooms him. Julie loves her job but it s not an easy one. It s very hard on your back and your hips, she says. And you get hurt quite often. Last year one of the horses kicked me and broke my arm. I ve also had broken fingers and toes. It s cold in winter, so my hands and feet get very cold.
