Referral List Behavioral Intervention In-Home Outreach and School District Consultation The following is a referral list of providers of behavioral intervention. The agencies listed here have been recommended by parents and have agreed to be on this referral list. Please contact their offices to inquire about specific information. The description of services is listed exactly as they submitted or as found in their literature.

Autism Referral List: Behavioral Intervention Selecting a Behavioral Intervention Provider Although does not currently require a specific certification to practice applied behavior analysis (ABA), some practitioners complete a voluntary certification program through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. (BACB ), which adheres to the national standards for boards that grant professional credentials. The BACB defines its mission as to develop, promote, and implement an international certification program for behavior analyst practitioners. The BACB has established uniform content, standards, and criteria for the credentialing process that are designed to meet 1. The legal standards established through state, federal and case law; 2. The accepted standards for national certification programs; and 3. The "best practice" and ethical standards of the behavior analysis profession. Professional certifications offered by the BACB are: BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst - Doctoral), BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) and BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst). For more information about the BACB and its requirements for each certification, please visit www.bacb.com. The Autism Special Interest Group of the Association for Behavior Analysis International has published Consumer Guidelines for Identifying, Selecting and Evaluating Behavior Analysts Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, which is available through Autism. Please call 800.4.AUTISM to obtain a copy. For more information about the Autism Special Interest Group, visit www.autismsig.org. To learn more about applied behavior analysis, contact Autism to request a copy of our booklet, Applied Behavior Analysis and Autism: An Introduction. For additional referrals, visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/abajobconnections, a group designed for parents and professionals to post help wanted or services available listings for ABA therapists and consultants.

Autism Referral List: Behavioral Intervention Functional Assessment Functional assessment helps us identify what a child is communicating through their inappropriate behaviors. In turn, this allows us to identify and teach an appropriate replacement behavior that will communicate the same information. To conduct a functional assessment of a behavior, look closely at the conditions surrounding a behavior. What happens just before a behavior occurs? What happens just after the behavior? Over time, do patterns emerge? Does the behavior occur each time the child s toy is taken away? Does the behavior result in the child s toy being returned? If so, this suggests that the behavior is communicating, Give me back my toy. An important point to remember about functional assessment involves what to do with your results. These results should guide you towards a skill that can be taught and reinforced to replace the problematic behavior. All interventions based on functional assessment should involve teaching an appropriate behavior that will take the place of the target behavior. Available services on the following pages are denoted as follows: Provides services in the home Provides ongoing school consultation The geographical area where services are provided is listed, and any provider limitations are indicated. Contact providers directly for information such as rates, insurance participation, etc.
