Program Product Sept. 1998 Vol. 26.1 Simple Non-Disruptive Backup of DASD Volumes FDR InstantBackup allows you to create a point-in-time image of an online DASD volume, on an offline DASD device, and backup that offline disk as if it were the online volume. The online volume is available for normal use and updates. Since the frozen offline image is actually read, changes to the online volume will have no effect on the backup. FDR InstantBackup offers substantial enhancements with FASTCPK and FDRCOPY using the SnapShot and EMC hardware commands. FDR InstantBackup supports and enhances the use of: EMC Timefinder with BCV s STK Iceberg with Snapshot Copy AMDAHL s TDMF IBM RVA with Snapshot Copy HDS with Dataplex Comparex with CDRF/CMRF Open System Backup UPSTREAM /SOS provides FDRSOS users with logical file backup/restore support using EMC SYMMETRIX DASD as a channel pass through which allows the data to go directly to the ESCON channel and not through the network. This provides a significant performance benefit for the backup/restore compared to network oriented backups. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON FDR INSTANTBACKUP QUESTION: What benefits will I see with FDRCOPY and FASTCPK? ANSWER: FASTCPK with SNAPSHOT=YES or EMCCOPY=YES provides substantial reductions in elapsed time, EXCPs, and CPU time, without using an offline volume. These functions use commands provided in the control unit microcode by the hardware vendor to change the location of the data on the online volume without reading the tracks into the CPU or writing them back from the CPU. FDRCOPY automatically takes advantage of RVA/Iceberg Snapshot Copy if you have FDR InstantBackup and the input and output data sets are located within the same subsystem. The COPY/MOVE will complete within a few seconds, even if the data sets are very large. On an EMC controller FDRCOPY will automatically use EMC hardware commands to copy tracks within a controller, bypassing the CPU. A common use of FDRCOPY is to create test copies of production data sets; the production data needs to be quiesced only for the time required to snap/copy the data. No special operands are required to get this benefit. //COPY EXEC PGM=FDRCOPY //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* COPY TYPE=DSF,DSNENQ=USE SELECT CATDSN=ACCOUNTS.**,NEWI=.+Y2K,NVOL=Y2K* QUESTION: Is a backup of an offline volume a regular FDR backup? ANSWER: Yes. A backup tape created from an offline volume by FDR InstantBackup is identical to a backup tape created from the original volume by FDR or DSF, and can be used for all of the same kinds of restores, with the same considerations. Once the offline volume is split or snapped, the backup can be taken at any later time, regardless of any changes to the original volume, such as data sets being updated, allocated, or scratched. QUESTION: What is the Effect of using DSNENQ=USE or ENQ=? ANSWER: When running FDR InstantBackup to process the offline volume, ensure that you do not specify DSNENQ=USE or HAVE or TEST, or ENQ=RESERVE. While these operands are recommended when backing up normal volumes, they should not be used when backing up BCV volumes, snapped volumes, etc. These operands would lock up the data sets or VTOC on the original volume; DSNENQ= would make data sets inaccessible and ENQ= would prevent new allocations, expansions and deletions of all data sets. NOTE: The ENQ= and DSNENQ= options are supported on the SNAP TYPE=FDR command when creating the snap volume to ensure data set and VTOC integrity. QUESTION: If we are backing up the offline volume with FDR InstantBackup, why do we see I/O to the original volume? ANSWER: FDR InstantBackup OPENs the VTOC of the original volume and reads the volume label of the offline volume to verify that the serial number of the offline volume is the same as that of the original volume. No other I/O is done to the original volume.the presence of the FDR219 message indicates that the offline volume is the volume being backed up. For example, in the following SYSPRINT listing, PROD01 is the original volume, but the backup is being done from the offline volume at address 01FA as indicated by message FDR219. FDR303 FDR219 CARD IMAGE--DUMP TYPE=FDR FDR VOL=PROD01 IS BEING DUMPED FROM OFFLINE UNIT=01FA 3

FDR/UPSTREAM YEAR 2000 COMPLIANT VERSION 3.0.0 IS NOW AVAILABLE. FDR/UPSTREAM VERSION 3.0.1 FDR/Upstream Version 3.0.1 is now in beta and will be GA in October, 1998. Some of the significant new features are: Certified for NetWare 5, NLM Version Novell NLM Version. FDR/UPSTREAM can now be run on the Novell server it is backing up, providing fast backup performance and reduced network overhead. Novell Storage Management Services (SMS) is supported with Novell features such as name spaces including Macintosh name spaces, compressed data (without decompression), and security attributes included. This version has been NetWare certified for NetWare V5 and carries the Novell Yes/Approved logo. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON FDR/UPSTREAM QUESTION: Does FDR/Upstream support Hot Backup of an Online Database? ANSWER: Yes, FDR/Upstream offers fully integrated, comprehensive backup/restore support for online Hot backups and full and incremental backup for the most popular databases and offers powerful pre and post processing facilities that can execute programs, batch files or scripts. Support is provided for Oracle, SQL Server, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange. FDR/Upstream also interfaces with BMC s SQL-BackTrack OBSI interface for support of Oracle, Sybase and Informix databases. QUESTION: Does FDR/Upstream backup open files? ANSWER: Yes, FDR/Upstream is able to backup open files. Upstream is able to access special system files such as the Windows NT Registry, event logs and ACL s, and also Novell s NDS and can back them up and restore them. Upstream also supports St. Bernard Software s Open File Manager. With Open File Manager FDR/Upstream can capture ALL open files on Windows NT or Novell NetWare servers, or NT Workstations, regardless of their state. QUESTION: Does Upstream support the NT registry? Upstream and Upstream/SOS support backups and restores and also allows selective Registry Restores for Windows NT. A new feature in FDR/Upstream 3.0.0 allows you to control exactly which information is to be restored from the registry hive backup file without losing the configuration information that is already in the registry. QUESTION: What is the integration between FDRSOS and UPSTREAM/SOS? Upstream/SOS provides high speed complete file level backup/recovery including incremental backup, archival and file level granularity for PC/LAN/UNIX data through the EMC ESCON channel connection bypassing the network. When a disaster occurs, you first restore the entire physical volume using FDRSOS. Then using the Highlighted Back to FDRSOS Full option, UPSTREAM/SOS will restore just the files modified since the FDRSOS backup. Upstream/SOS will extract the modification date/time from the FDRSOS Timestamp file and then will transmit just the files changed in backups which were performed since the time of that FDRSOS full physical volume backup. FDRSOS User Experience: FDRSOS full volume backup of a 4GB Windows NT Server running on an IBM 9672-R45 CPU to Magstar Tape Drives. Incremental backups during the week. FDR INSTANTBACKUP REDUCES COMPLEXITY (Cont.) DFSMSdss restrictions using Snapped Volumes SIBBATCH SNAP with COPYVOLID(NO) and CONDITIONVOLUME(ALL) The image volume has a different serial number from the original volume; the VTOC index and VVDS of the image volume are renamed to match its serial number. You can mount the image volume and do a physical backup with DFSMSdss. You cannot do a logical backup of VSAM data sets. From the physical backup you cannot do a logical restore of VSAM data sets. You can do a full-volume restore, but for the data sets to be fully usable you must rename the serial number, VTOC index, and VVDS back to the original names. This procedure could be a SIBBATCH SNAP with COPYVOLID(NO) and CONDITIONVOLUME(ALL) from a restored volume back to another online volume. SIBBATCH SNAP with COPYVOLID(NO) and CONDITIONVOLUME(LABEL) The image volume has a different serial number from the original volume, but the VTOC index and VVDS of the image volume reflect the serial number of the original volume. You can mount the volume and do a physical backup with DFSMSdss. You cannot do a logical backup of VSAM data sets. VSAM data sets cannot be restored (physically or logically). You can do a full-volume restore, but for the data sets to be fully usable you must ensure that the output volume from the restore has the original serial number. You could do this by running ICKDSF with the RELABEL command. SIBBATCH SNAP with COPYVOLID(YES) The image volume has the same serial number as the original volume. It cannot be brought online on a system where the original volume is online. It can be backed up by DFSMSdss only on some other system. With FDR InstantBackup, the customer invokes program FDRSNAP to SnapShot Copy the volumes instead of SIBBATCH. With FDRSNAP, the image volume always has the same serial number as the original volume, as with SIBBATCH COPYVOLID(YES). Even though the image volume remains offline, with FDR InstantBackup you can do any kind of backup operation on the image volume, either full-volume (FDR) or data set (FDRDSF), either VSAM or non-vsam, and from the the resulting backup tapes you can do any kind of restore of either the full volume or individual data sets, exactly as though the backup had been taken from the original volume. If you do a full-volume restore, the restore can automatically set the output volume to the original serial number (CPYVOLID=YES). FDRSNAP alters the label track of the snapped volume so that it cannot come online after an IPL or mount instead of the real volume. If you do an FDR or DSF backup of an online volume with the SNAP=USE operand, FDR automatically finds and backs up the most recent snapped image of that volume instead. In addition, if SNAP=(USE,REL) is specified, an FDR or DSF backup from a snapped volume will release the RVA back-end storage assigned to the image volume, after the backup. For platforms other than the RVA/Iceberg, the problems and the FDR InstantBackup procedures are similar. 5

FDR INSTANTBACKUP REDUCES COMPLEXITY FDR InstantBackup reduces the complexity of backup and restore operations using offline volumes created by: EMC Timefinder with BCV s STK Iceberg with Snapshot Copy AMDAHL s TDMF IBM RVA with Snapshot Copy HDS with Dataplex Comparex with CDRF/CMRF These DASD subsystems enable the user to quickly create a point-in-time image of a DASD volume. Updates to the original volume have to be quiesced only during the short time it takes to create the point-in-time image. Then updates to the original volume can resume while the image volume is backed up to tape. Complexity arises because the OS/390 and MVS Operating System does not allow two volumes with the same serial number to be online at the same time, and because VSAM data sets are not accessible through normal operations when the dsname of the VVDS does not match the volume serial number. The simplest approach is to be able to back up the image volume while it is still an exact image, even from a system where the original volume is still online. This is possible only with FDR InstantBackup. With other backup software, you have to either change the serial number, or go to another system. If you change the serial number of an image volume in order to be able to bring it online to a system where the original volume is online, and you back it up with the other serial number, then during a full-volume restore you must have procedures to change the serial number back to the original. With FDR InstantBackup, the image volume keeps the same serial number as the original volume, and is not brought online. FDR InstantBackup performs the backup while the image volume remains offline. Customers without FDR InstantBackup who have IBM RVA or STK ICEBERG with the SnapShot hardware feature must use the IXFP utility program (SIBBATCH) to invoke SnapShot Copy. This program provides several options for handling the serial number of the image volume, but none of them are as convenient as FDR InstantBackup. Also, DFSMSdss backups of snapped volumes have restrictions on the types of backups/restores that can be done. (Continued on Page 5.)
