1 Introducing FDRSOS (Safeguard Open Storage) FDRSOS (Safeguard Open Storage) provides high-speed, reliable backups of Open Systems (SCSI) data to an MVS or OS/390 System. FDRSOS and the SYMMETRIX 3000 and 5000 Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) allow companies to leverage their existing mainframe disaster recovery infrastructure to back up and restore their rapidly expanding volume of open system information. IAM Version 6.3 Level 20 is now available. IAM (Innovation Access Method) is a transparent alternative to VSAM KSDS and ESDS files which offers significant improvements in elapsed time, CPU time and space usage compared to VSAM. IAM 6.3 level 20 contains support for Year See page 3 for details on how IAM compares to VSAM using hardware compression. FDR Version 5.2 Level 60 is now available. FDR Version 5.2 Level 60 or higher is required to support IBM MAGSTAR tape drives. See our WEB page for more details. FATS/FATAR Version 4.5 (Available April,1997). FATS/FATAR provides tape certification, erasure, verification and copying of tapes. FATS/FATAR Version 4.5 contains performance improvements and support for IBM MAGSTAR and STK REDWOOD cartridge drives. FDR/UPSTREAM Version 2.6 (Available 2nd Quarter, 1997). FDR/UPSTREAM is adding support for HP-UX and SUN SOLARIS UNIX Systems. Automatic recall of migrated files on Novell systems. See our WEB page for further details. YEAR 2000 Support. 2 FDRSOS (Safeguard Open Storage) FDRSOS provides high-speed physical image backup and restores of Open System volumes residing on EMC SYMMETRIX 3000 and 5000 Enterprise Storage Platforms (ESP). SYMMETRIX ESP allows mainframe ESCON or Parallel channels to access SCSI formatted volumes. FDRSOS is able to read and write to the SCSI volumes directly from a MVS system without the need to transfer Open System data over a network. This gives FDRSOS superior performance over PC or mainframe-based backup systems. FDRSOS supports a wide range of UNIX based file systems and databases (IBM AIX, HP-UX, SUN Solaris, System V, Oracle, etc). FDRSOS also supports all PC-based file systems (WindowsNT, OS/2, Netware, etc). How does FDRSOS work? SYMMETRIX ESP allows Count Key Data (CKD) and SCSI volumes to co-exist on the same control unit. From the UNIX/PC side SCSI channels access the Open System disks. From the mainframe side ESCON channels allow access to both the CKD and SCSI disks (see Figure 1). Normally, MVS does not allow SCSI (FBA) volumes to be mounted or accessed. However, with ESP these volumes can be GENed as 3380/3390 volumes to MVS, and with FDRSOS the user can assign normal MVS volume serial numbers to these volumes. FDRSOS can then pseudo mount these volumes to MVS with a simple vary online command (usually at IPL time). This allows FDRSOS to allocate to the SCSI volumes using normal JCL DD statements or FDRSOS MOUNT commands. FDRSOS backups are standard sequential files containing ASCII data which can be managed by all tape management systems (TMS, TLMS, etc). FDRSOS uses SAF compatible Security Systems (RACF, TOP SECRET, ACF2, etc) to control access to the volumes and backups. Do I need my UNIX/PC systems up to restore at a disaster site? NO. FDRSOS can recreate SYMMETRIX SCSI volumes from MVS without having the UNIX or PC systems operational or communicating. What special features does FDRSOS have? FDRSOS can create a second copy for vaulting, during or after the backup. FDRSOS can backup/restore many Open System volumes concurrently and/or serially. FDRSOS starts a subtask for each unique tape drive supplied and then serializes any remaining SCSI volumes using these tape drives. FDRSOS can Security Fast Erase your SCSI volumes. FDRSOS can Print and Scan SCSI data from the mainframe. Figure 1

3 FDRSOS PERFORMANCE A typical user with a 100GB database using a standard backup package currently requires 24 to 48 hours to backup to local DAT tapes. With FDRSOS s advanced technology, you can backup the same 100GB database in 2 hours to 3490E and 1 hour to IBM Magstar, STK Timberline or Redwood Tape (SYMMETRIX 5500 running eight backups to two control units simultaneously). The FDR/UPSTREAM/SOS option provides FDRSOS users logical file Backup/Restore support, Job Scheduling and Coordination between the Mainframe and UNIX/LAN/PC systems, Reporting and Administrative control. UPSTREAM can backup files incrementally to local SCSI disk residing on a SYMMETRIX controller. These local backups can be read directly by UPSTREAM MIGRATION to create a copy on mainframe tapes without transmitting the data over a network. UPSTREAM will recover files from their most current Incremental Backups back to the point of the FDRSOS full volume restore. UPSTREAM executes Open System (PC) Jobs and Scripts from MVS Batch Jobs or MVS Jobs from the PCs to coordinate PC functions with FDRSOS (ex: Database Shutdown).

4 IAM VERSUS HARDWARE COMPRESSION: THE SIGNIFICANT VALUE OF IAM IAM has been in the MVS marketplace for over 20 years, providing an outstanding level of performance compared to VSAM. IAM offers CPU time savings, along with reductions in that result in reduced elapsed times for batch jobs and improved response times for online systems. In the past few years, the most important features of IAM, for many customers, have been IAM s ability to support VSAM data sets that have exceeded 4.3 gigabytes in size, and the DASD space savings of IAM s data compression. With the advent of VSAM support for data compression and over 4.3 gigabyte file size as DFSMS 1.3 or OS/390 is installed, Innovation and customers have run tests comparing IAM to VSAM s Hardware Compression. Innovation has done some comparisons with the new features provided by VSAM, using files from production applications of customers systems. It might be supposed that the IBM CPU hardware compression facility used by VSAM would offer improved data compression over the technique used by IAM, as hardware compression utilizes a more sophisticated algorithm. The IBM hardware data compression facility requires the use of a data dictionary for compressing the data, so the data compression results for any particular data stream are dependent on how reflective the dictionary is of the data. Under ideal usage, such a data compression algorithm requires that the data be previewed so that a data dictionary can be built that will provide maximum compression. The generation of such a data dictionary is an expensive process. IBM s implementation of compression for VSAM examines the first several records passed during a file load, and then builds a dictionary from internal generic tables. While this technique minimizes the overhead of building a dictionary, it also reduces the potential effectiveness of the compression algorithm. From tests done on customer data and from customer reports, we have found that while VSAM s compression does reduce DASD space requirements when compared to an uncompressed VSAM file format, IAM still frequently requires less DASD space than VSAM. For example, for an 11 gigabyte VSAM file (test A1) from a customer production system, IAM reduced the file size by 79%, compared to VSAM uncompressed. VSAM compression yielded a 76% DASD space savings. The net result was that the IAM used 6,664 fewer tracks than VSAM, such that the IAM compressed file used 13% less DASD space than compressed VSAM. On a 1.4 gigabyte file from a different customer (test B1), the IAM compressed file used 38% less DASD space than the VSAM compressed file, a savings of 6,371 tracks over the VSAM compression. So, with somewhat similar DASD space savings for KSDS VSAM data sets, where is the value of IAM? The answer is in the resource requirement to achieve those results. On stand alone performance tests done on the 11 gigabyte file, IAM used 83% less CPU time than VSAM, and ran in 70% less elapsed time to load the file with an IDCAMS REPRO. With IAM s BACKUPCOMPRESSED feature, the file load time is reduced by an additional 52%, with an additional CPU time savings of 80%. IAM with the default of 30 buffers did 79% fewer than VSAM with the same number of buffers (31)! For the smaller 1.4 gigabyte file, IAM used 65% less CPU time than VSAM for compression, and ran in 46% less elapsed time for a file load to a IAM used 93% fewer with IAM buffering set to the maximum buffering, and VSAM buffering set to the maximum IBM recommendation. IAM also provides value by using less resources to read the data. For example, doing an IDCAMS REPRO read of the 11 gigabyte file (test A2), IAM used 42% less CPU time than VSAM, and ran in 59% less elapsed time, with 55% fewer using a comparable number of buffers (32 and 31). IAM s BACKUPCOMPRESSED feature further reduced the elapsed time to read this file by an additional 13%, with a CPU time reduction of 53%. For the 1.4 gigabyte file (test B2), IAM used 32% less CPU time than VSAM, and ran in 47% less elapsed time, with 68% fewer.

5 IAM VERSUS HARDWARE COMPRESSION SUMMARY: IDRC on tape drives provides very effective compression with no cost in CPU time, because the compression is done in the tape control unit. The data compression used by VSAM is different, because it is done in the CPU. Hardware compression can reduce the required space, but at a substantial increase in CPU time. The tests show that IAM s file structure and software compression technique is significantly faster than VSAM s hardware compression, while giving comparable or better space reduction. IAM delivers superior performance and better space savings while using less CPU time. IAM compression is available for both KSDS and ESDS files. VSAM Hardware compression is only available for KSDS files.
