Cutting Costs in Workers Comp: New Thoughts on an Old Nemesis Presented by the North Carolina Association of Self-Insurers

Overview There are no easy answers on how to reduce costs in workers compensation but that does not mean the discussion is futile. Our intrepid presenters suggest new ways of thinking about this perennial challenge: reconsidering job analyses and ergonomic assessments, improving communication across the several generations at work, using a vigorous behavior-based safety process, to name a few promising avenues. Costs averted are but another form of cost savings. The annual conference of the is an ideal forum to network with your peers and potential customers and learn about emerging developments in workers compensation. The conference provides valuable continuing education credits for adjusters and lawyers, and an excellent opportunity for sponsors and exhibitors. About the Speakers Elizabeth Bailey, vice president, workers compensation & safety at Waffle House oversees a workers compensation program which encompasses over 1,400 restaurants in 25 states. A Certified Workers' Compensation Professional, she is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. Jennifer Morris Jones, a partner in Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog s Raleigh office, is a graduate of Salem College and Campbell University. She is included in The Best Lawyers in America 2016 for Workers Compensation- Employers, and in the 2014 and 2015 North Carolina Rising Stars for Workers Compensation. Paul Colman, principal consultant at Rimkus, graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His experience includes investigating construction accidents, slip and falls, compliance with building codes, and contract specifications. Tim Edwards, MS, CRC, CEAS, a vocational specialist at Southern Rehab, received his master s in vocational rehabilitation counseling from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He has experience in job development/placement/ assessment, as well as STD/LTD and labor market surveys. Manish A. Fozdar, MD, DFAPA is the Medical Director for Neuro- Restorative-North Carolina. He is in practice of Neuropsychiatry & Behavioral Neurology, Medical Psychiatry, Forensic Neuropsychiatry and General Psychiatry. Dr. Fozdar is currently affiliated with Duke University Medical School and Campbell University. Scarlette Gardner is workers compensation manager at State of North Carolina Office of State Human Resources. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law. Bruce Hamilton, a partner in Teague Campbell, graduated from Tulane University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Chairman Andrew Heath is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and Indiana University, where he received his law degree. He has been recognized as a Lawyers Weekly Emerging Legal Leader and one of Business North Carolina s Legal Elite. Beverly P. Jeter, M.Ed., CRC is a case management supervisor at Genex. She is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University, where she obtained her graduate degree in counseling education. Robert Kaylor is a graduate of East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina School of Law. Mallory E. Lidaka, an attorney at Lewis & Roberts, received her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University at Buffalo and her law degree, cum laude, from Campbell University. Kevin McDaniel is safety/wellness facilitator at Columbia Forest Products facility in Chatham, VA. Prior to joining Columbia Forest Products, he worked as a jet-engine mechanic in the U.S. Air Force. Jay Norris, NCASI president, is manager of claims at Duke Energy Corporation. He supervises Duke Energy s workers compensation program in multiple jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada, and is responsible for insurance renewals and placements and for managing Duke s self-insurance and claims management programs. Angela Prenoveau, MS, CRC, CEAS is vocational supervisor at Southern Rehab. She obtained her master s in rehabilitation studies from East Carolina University. Benton L. Toups is a partner in the Wilmington office of Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Louisiana State University. J.
