The increase in funding is needed in order to accommodate an additional staff member as well as the leasing and operations of a new facility. The new facility will house a multi purpose boardroom, community kitchen, satellite touch-down offices for local agencies as well as act as the headquarters for the centre. This new space will also provide the NWLRC with programming space, increased storage and a deeper level of autonomy for the centre. The new space is meant to act as a hub for London Northwest, connecting individuals to their community. The Northwest London Resource Centre and the Northwest London neighbourhood cannot continue to grow without the support of this new facility; by not implementing this initiative, the Northwest London neighbourhood is being deprived of the opportunity to reach its potential. As it stands, there is limited access to space for programming, education, workshops and skill development, which, in turn, is limiting opportunities for residents including limiting the number and types of collaborations the Northwest London Resource Centre is able to take on for the benefit of the neighbourhood. This increase in funding is being requested to accommodate the leasing of a new space and the wages for additional full-time staff members. Considering the ongoing partnership between the Library Settlement Partnership (LSP) program at Sherwood Library and the North West London Resource Centre, the LSP fully supports and encourages this expansion. Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP) offer a unique and innovative newcomer information service in several communities throughout Ontario. This service is made possible by a partnership of the settlement sector, public libraries, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (dc). LSP services vary in different cities around the province, and may include one-on-one settlement information and referral, group information sessions, and community outreach. The collaborative relationship between the NWLRC and the LSP program at Sherwood library continues to impact and improve the community. Allowing the centre to expand, not only amplifies the impact they make but aids service providers such as the LSP program to extend their services as well. The Northwest London Resource Centre provides opportunities for the community s youth to make meaningful connections within their neighbourhood and has been a leader in encouraging positive collaboration and partnership between service providers. The new space, which the increase in funding will go towards, will allow the Northwest London Resource Centre not only to continue to do their work, but also expand and improve their program and service delivery. The Nor West Optimist Club is in full support of these initiatives. As a community partner, the Nor West Optimists are excited by the prospect of the NWLRC s new space. This new space will be able to offer the Northwest neighbourhood a certified kitchen as well as a multi-purpose boardroom. As no such facility currently exists in the neighbourhood, the NWLRC s new space would open up a multitude of possibilities in terms of programming (nutritional literacy programs, cooking classes, etc) as well as opportunities for local businesses and service clubs to use the boardroom for meeting space, training space and programming space, not to mention community gatherings. Friday, August 29, 2014 Re: Northwest London Resource Centre s Application to Increase City of London Funding Letter of Support To Whom It May Concern; I have had the pleasure of working with the Northwest London Resource Centre (NWLRC) on many occasions since its opening. I have been a resident in the Northwest area for more than 20 years. I can assure you the NWLRC is by far the most welcome and needed project this neighbourhood has ever seen. The impact it has had on both the young and old our Northwest Community is truly amazing! I am writing this letter in support of the NWLRC s request to increase their current city funding. I know this group really needs more office help, another full-time staff member would be a huge benefit not only to the organization but to the community as well. Also, they are busting at the seams in their current location. With an increase to their core funding, the NWLRC will be able to move to badly needed new space. As a neighbourhood volunteer with both the local Optimist and Lions organizations I have seen first hand how inadequate their current space is to their needs and the neighbourhood s needs. There is no programming space of their own and the staff are crammed into every nook and corner of the office. The new space would provide the NWLRC, and in turn, the neighbourhood, with the ability to house its own programs and would allow staff to each have their own personal working space. The potential for more programs are endless provided the space is available. Our neighbourhood has very little shared space that residents can use and there are no certified kitchens for nutrition programs or community events. By granting the NWLRC additional funding for new space it would give the neighbourhood the opportunity to utilize these types of amenities as well as give the NWLRC the opportunity to deliver programming and services around these new facilities. With the intended multi purpose boardroom, for instance, residents would be able to use it to hold workshops or clubs of their own. As residents, we would have a space in the heart of the neighbourhood that we could call our own with the NWLRC there to support us as they always have been. I truly hope you consider the NWLRC s request for increased funding.
