This course covers the main content of a general mediation training and at the same time focuses on the field of peacebuilding and development cooperation. It fulfils the requirements of the German Federal Association for Mediation (Bundesverband Mediation) in a way that it can easily be topped up for an accreditation. Mediation and... Development Cooperation/ Humanitarian Aid...Civilian Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding Mediative skills are essential for practitioners and strategists in their daily work such as of development cooperation, humanitarian aid, civilian conflict resolution, and peace-building. Development cooperation and humanitarian aid are often concerned with ethno-political conflicts in which mediation can be very useful. One is often in the position to mediate not just among warring parties but also among different project partners or beneficiaries. Developing conflict sensitive projects requires a thorough grounding in the use of mediative skills, strategies, and methods. Inclusive/omni-partial strategies of intervention need to be translated to concrete actions. Successful interventions require complex mediation processes. Within dialog processes and capacity-building projects, mediative skills are applied. Within organisations and in intercultural teams, conflict sensitive communication is crucial. Depending on the level of societal concern, cultural diversity, and complexity of a conflict, different actors (often called tracks ) may have various approaches. This course embraces the complementarities of multiple tracks and promotes mediative efforts which work within the diversity of approaches to create added value to the overall conflict resolution process. The course will look at the various tracks and the linkages among them to support sustainable peace. The course addresses individuals that presently or in the future work in the areas of development cooperation, humanitarian aid, civilian conflict resolution and peace-building or peace studies as well as those who want to expand their knowledge and skills in conflict transformation. For others who wish to acquire a new and self-contained career perspective as mediator, this course fulfils the requirements of the main component of the 200 hour certification of the German Federal Association of Mediation. Multi-track Target Group Didactics Mediation is not only a process but more importantly an intrinsic attitude that expresses itself within every action. The course didactics are based on three interwoven components: Knowledge about methods and techniques for dialogue and process design; Context analysis and the strategic considerations to assure that methods are effectively implemented and strategically wise; and Adequate self-reflexion of the mediator as an essential component of successful mediation. 4 5

Today, the inmedio-group consists of inmedio Berlin and inmedio Frankfurt. We conduct mediation in non-profit-organisations and businesses in Germany as well as mediation, dialogueprojects & training abroad, for NGOs and governmental actors in development cooperation, humanitarian aid and peacebuilding. In the past 15 years, during approximately 50 extended mediation-courses, inmedio has trained approximately 700 professional mediators and surveyed more than 500 cases of mediation. Inmedio is a long-term partner of the directorate for development cooperation of the Swiss federal department for foreign affairs regarding the qualification of mediators. CSSP CSSP Berlin Center for Integrative Mediation is a registered, non-profit association in Germany. The organisation s headquarter is in Berlin with local offices in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was originally founded in 2005 to draw lessons from the ten years work of the International Mediator in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling (1995 2004). From 2005 until 2010, CSSP worked primarily in the post-war context in the Balkans (Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia (FYROM) and Serbia). During the last two years, its outreach has extended to the transitional societies in the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) Region and to South Asia (Nepal). CSSP is operating on different tracks with a focus on intercommunity dialogue. CSSP supports conflict parties in their effort to discuss issues of concern, build trusting relationships and develop durable solutions. CSSP has expertise in mediation, political conflict analysis, intercultural communication, confidence-building/trust-building, decentralisation, gender awareness, negotiation, non-discrimination and strategic planning. Through various workshops, the organisation has trained over 200 political and community leaders in mediation processes as well as for capacity-building purposes. Trainers Dr. Norbert Ropers (Berghof Foundation) founding director of the Berghof Research Center for Conflict Studies 1993, from 2004 to 2011 co-director of the Berghof Foundation for Peace Support, since 2012 Program Director at the Berghof Foundation. Political scientist and sociologist, mediator, facilitator and trainer. During the 1970 s and 1980 s he was active in peace and conflict studies with special interest on international exchange and intercultural learning. During the 1990 s his focus lay on action research regarding ethnopolitical conflicts and their transformation. 2001-2008 director of a peace building network in Sri Lanka. Since 2009 support of insider-mediators in South and Southeast Asia based in Bangkok. Ljubjana Wüstehube (Inmedio Berlin) mediation trainer with more than 15 years of mediation practice, certified by the German and Austrian federal associations of mediators. She co-directed 200-hour-mediation-courses in cooperation with the Swiss Development Cooperation as well as the University of Applied Sciences of north-western Switzerland for many years. In 1998, Ljubjana co-founded inmedio, institute for mediation, consulting, development. During the 1980 s, she organised German-Soviet youth exchanges and developed a concept of peer-mediation combined with traumacounselling for war refugees from the Balkans in the 1990 s. Since then she gathered experience in Kosovo, Palestine/Israel, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nepal. Dirk Splinter (Inmedio Berlin) certified mediator and mediation trainer (BM, BMWA) with more than ten years of experience in the field. He co-directs inmedio, institute for mediation, consulting, development since more than 10 years. Dirk mediates in various contexts (community, business, INGOs and relief agencies) but does also design and implement conflict-management-systems for bigger organisations. Furthermore he provides mediation training for post graduate programs of different universities in Germany and Switzerland since 2002. He was/is involved in dialogue/ capacity-building projects in Turkey, Georgia, Egypt and Nepal among others. Dirk is a member of the Reflecting-on-Peace- Practices Learning community of CDA (Boston, MA). Christoph Lüttmann (CSSP) studied Political Science and Public Law in Berlin and Bologna and holds a university degree from the Freie Universität Berlin where he focused on conflict prevention and post-conflict peace-building. Christoph Lüttmann previously worked for a Swiss NGO for refugees in Lausanne, the United Nations Secretariat in New York, the Research Center 700 - Governance in Limited Statehood and the Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF) in Berlin. He is a certified Mediator and joined CSSP in March 2009. Christoph is Integrative Mediator for Kosovo and coordinator for the South Eastern European Mediation Forum. Julia von Dobeneck (CSSP) is a certified mediator and holds a diploma in media consultancy. Between 2002 and 2012 Julia von Dobeneck worked for the parliamentary representation of Alliance 90/The Greens in the German Bundestag, from 2006 as advisor on media policy. Her responsibilities included policy areas such as freedom of information and the potential of digitalisation for democracy and political dialogue. Julia von Dobeneck joined CSSP in September 2012 as Integrative Mediator and works mainly in CSSP s peace mediation projects on the Western Balkans. Dr. Juan Diaz (mediateur) Dr. Juan Diaz is the Berlin Representative of mediateur. He is a mediator, trainer and facilitator working on political, economic and social integration. He is a tri-lingual conflict resolution specialist with over 14 years of experience managing mediations in conflict-affected regions, especially in East and Central Europe. Juan teaches mediation at several European universities with an interactive experiential learning approach. He also works with mediation trainers on specific courses, including peace mediation, professional negotiation, and conflict transformation. After receiving a doctorate in International Relations, he specialised in mediation in transitional or postconflict regions. Over the last 13 years Juan has dedicated his work to peace-building in regions, such as South Eastern Europe, South Asia and North Africa. In 2005 he co-founded the CSSProject for Integrative Mediation and served as its Director and Chairperson from January 2005 to May 2012. 10 11
