SPORTS SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Our SHSM program in Sports at David Suzuki SS has a focus on personal development, interpersonal skills and leadership. All students will gain knowledge about physical fitness and health education, kinesiology, recreation and leisure activities. The in-school program consists of a bundle of courses in each of the areas which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance student learning. Students will be involved in reach ahead experiences and exposure to post-secondary institutions such as the University of Waterloo as well as Humber and Sheridan Colleges. Students will also have an opportunity for job shadowing and job twinning experiences. There will be sector recognized certifications in WHMIS, AED, First Aid, CPR, as well as coaching (NCCP), High Five, taping and wrapping. In order to complete an SHSM in Sports, students 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post secondary plans.
