1 elearning Course Offerings Note* All students whom are considering taking an elearning course must have a computer at home and an address. Students can work on their elearning courses here at school e.g. in the library or guidance office; however, there is limited computers available and it is on a first come first served basis. Students can bring in a laptop or ipad from home but it is the student s responsibility if they choose to do so. It is highly recommended that students have a history of solid academic achievement (level 3 or 4). You will also need to have strong and consistent work habits in order to be successful in an elearning course. International Business Fundamentals (E-Learning) BBB4MV This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management. Entrepreneurship: The Venture (E-Learning) BDI3CV This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a school-based or student-run business. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. GRADE: 11 TYPE: College PREREQUISITE: NONE Entrepreneurship: Venture Planning in an Electronic Age (elearning) College BDV4CV This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills through the creation of a venture plan that capitalizes on the potential of e-commerce. Students will research and identify an opportunity for a venture.they will then complete the components of a venture plan that includes a website. Students will require the use of a computer, and address on a daily basis for this course. It is recommended that students have strong work habits and academic performance to take this course. Travel and Tourism: A Geographic Perspective (E- Learning) TYPE: college GRADE: 12 CGG3OV This course focuses on issues related to travel and tourism within and between various regions of the world. Students will investigate unique environmental, sociocultural, economic, and political characteristics of selected world regions. They will explore travel patterns and trends as well as tensions related to

2 tourism, and will predict future tourism destinations. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, to investigate the impact of the travel industry on natural environments and human communities. TYPE: Open GRADE: 11 PREREQUISITE: CGC1D - Issues in Canadian Geography or CGC1P - Issues in Canadian Geography The Environment and Resource Management (E-Learning) CGR4MV This course explores interactions between the natural and human environment, with a particular focus on the impact of human activity on various ecosystems. Students will explore resource management and sustainability practices, as well as related government policy and international protocols. Applying the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, students will investigate the relationship between people and the natural environment and will propose approaches for developing more sustainable relationships, including environmentally responsible actions that support stewardship. World Issues: A Geographic Analysis (E-Learning) CGW4UV This course looks at the global challenge of creating a more sustainable and equitable world. Students will explore a range of issues involving environmental, economic, social, and geopolitical interrelationships, and will examine governmental policies related to these issues. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, to investigate these complex issues, including their impact on natural and human communities around the world. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a responsible citizen who respects and affirms the diversity and interdependence of the world's peoples and cultures. PREREQUISITE: Any university or university/college preparation course in Canadian and World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities. Canada: History, Identity, and Culture (E-Learning) CHI4UV This course traces the history of Canada, with a focus on the evolution of our national identity and culture. Students will explore various developments and events, both national and international, from precontact to the present, and will examine various communities in Canada and how they have contributed to the development of Canadian identity and heritage. Students will develop their sense of Canada s national identity and how and why it has changed throughout the country s history. They will extend their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process,

3 including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, as they investigate the people, events, and forces that have shaped Canada. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a responsible citizen who respects and affirms the diversity and interdependence of the world's peoples and culture. Analysing Current Economic Issues (E-Learning) CIA4UV This course examines current national and global economic trends and policies from diverse perspectives. Students will explore the impact of choices that individuals and institutions, including governments, make in responding to local, national, and global economic issues such as globalization and global economic inequalities, trade agreements, national debt, taxation, social spending, and consumer debt. Students will apply the concepts of economic thinking and the economic inquiry process, including economic models, to investigate, and develop informed opinions about, current economic issues and to help them make reasoned economic decisions. PREREQUISITE: Any university or university/college preparation course in Canadian and World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities. Understanding Canadian Law (elearning) CLU3MV This course explores Canadian law, with a focus on legal issues that are relevant to the lives of people in Canada. Students will gain an understanding of rights and freedoms in Canada, our legal system, and family, contract, employment, tort, and criminal law. Students will use case studies and apply the concepts of legal thinking and the legal inquiry process to develop legal reasoning skills and to formulate and communicate informed interpretations of legal issues, and they will develop the ability to advocate for new laws. Students will analyse a variety of informational and

4 graphic texts, as well as literacy texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. Students will read, interpret information, and then develop ideas based on themes that allow students to integrate the Catholic experience into their appreciation of literature. The course is designed to prepare students for college or the workplace. PREREQUISITE: ENG3U - English or ENG3UV - English (E-Learning) English (E-Learning) ENG4UV This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace. Students will read, interpret information, and then develop ideas based on themes that allow students to integrate the Catholic experience into their appreciation of literature. PREREQUISITE: ENG3U - English or ENG3UV - English (E-Learning) The Writer's Craft (E-Learning) EWC4UV This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will analyse models of effective writing; use a workshop approach to produce a range of works; identify and use techniques required for specialized forms of writing; and identify effective ways to improve the quality of their writing. They will also complete a major paper as part of a creative or analytical independent study project, and investigate opportunities for publication and for writing careers. Families in Canada (E-Learning) HHS4UV This course enables students to draw on sociological, psychological, and anthropological theories and research to analyse the development of individuals, intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships. Students will focus on issues and challenges facing individuals and families in Canada s diverse society. They will develop analytical tools that enable them to assess various factors affecting families and to consider policies and practices intended to support families in Canada. They will develop

5 the investigative skills required to conduct and communicate the results of research on individuals, intimate relationships, and parent-child relationships. PREREQUISITE: Any university or university/college preparation course in Social Sciences and Humanities, English, or Canadian and World Studies. Housing and Home Design (elearning) HLS3OV This course introduces students to a range of issues related to housing and home design. Students will learn about the needs that housing fulfills; housing options; home maintenance and safety; and environmental, economic, legal, and social considerations related to housing. They will use the elements and principles of design to analyse design and decorating decisions. Students will develop research skills as they investigate issues related to housing and home design. TYPE: Open GRADE: 11 PREREQUISITES: None Challenge and Change in Society (E-Learning) HSB4UV This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over time. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Students will explore ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a self-directed, responsible, life-long learner who sets goals, and utilizes their gifts and talents while creating products that benefit others in a way that models Gospel values. Introduction to Computer Science (elearning) University ICS3UV This course introduces students to computer science. Students will design software independently and as part of a team, using industry-standard programming tools and applying the software development lifecycle model. They will also write and use subprograms within computer programs. Students will develop creative solutions for various types of problems as their understanding of the computing environment grows. They will also explore environmental and ergonomic issues, emerging research in computer science, and global career trends in computer-related fields. 6 PREREQUISITE: None Health for Life (on-line) PPZ3OV This course helps students develop a personalized approach to healthy living. Students will examine the factors that affect their own health and the health of individuals as members of the community. They will learn about the components of the Vitality approach to healthy living an initiative that promotes healthy eating, an active lifestyle, and a positive self-image. Throughout this course, students will develop the skills necessary to take charge of and improve their own health, as well as to encourage others to lead healthy lives.
