Progression of pharmacist s assistants in the category learner basic Last date of enrolment with providers and Council is 30 June 2015 All those registered as learners before and on 30 June 2015 must complete by 30 June 2018 Those learners who have not completed their training by 30 June 2018 will have to enroll as pharmacy general assistant learners form 01 July 2018 Those who fail to complete the training and also not register as pharmacy general assistant learners may not be in any register and hence should not perform the scope of practice of a pharmacist s assistant i.e. may be a teller, admin clerk or cleaner etc. There will be a period of 6 months i.e. 01 July 2018 to 31 December 2018 to consider appeals for registration of the learners in the category basic
Progression of Pharmacist s Assistants Learner Basic Last date of enrolment - 30 June 2015 All learners must complete training by 30 June 2018 Not completed training by 30 June 2018 Enroll as Pharmacy General Assistant Learners from 1 July 2018 Training not completed & not on PGA register may be a teller, admin clerk, cleaner or front shop assistant etc 01 July 2018 to 31 December 2018 Appeals for registration of the learners in the category basic

Progression of pharmacist s assistants in the category basic Those who remain in this category and not train further will be transferred to the register of pharmacy general assistant in 2030 (only for the purpose of practicing the scope and not for giving a qualification) Currently registered in this category may enroll in the category learner post-basic but the last date of enrolment with provider and Council is 30 June 2016

Progression of pharmacist s assistants in the category learner post-basic Last date of enrolment with providers and Council is 30 June 2016 All learners registered before and on 30 June 2016 must complete training by 30 June 2019 Those learners who have not completed their training by 30 June 2019 will be transferred to the register of pharmacist s assistants in the category basic and will remain there until 30 December 2029. On 01 January 2030, those in the category basic will be transferred to the register of pharmacy general assistant Those learners who complete their training in by 30 June 2019 will be in the register of pharmacist s assistants post basic until 30 December 2029

The registers of all categories of pharmacist s assistants and scope of practice ceases to exist 14

Training of pharmacy technical assistants One year full time programme (currently offered by NMMU, North-West and TUT are anticipated with the 2 new universities) Students will register with Council After completion they will either Register as trainee with Council (6 months) Register as pharmacy technician students After traineeship they will register as pharmacy technical assistants
Training of Pharmacy Technical Assistants One year full time programme - Higher Certificate (Students will register with Council) PTA Trainee (6 months) Graduation PT (Advanced Cert) Graduation PT Trainee (6 months)
Training of pharmacy technicians assistants One year full time programme Students will register with Council After completion they will register as trainee with Council (6 months) After traineeship they will register as pharmacy technicians and perform community service for a period still to be determined
Training of Pharmacy Technicians One year full time programme - Advanced Certificate (Students will register with Council) Graduation Registered PT Community Service PT Trainee (6 months)

Conclusions (contd) One year full time programme (currently offered by NMMU, North-West and TUT are anticipated with the 2 new universities) Alternative ways of training to become a PTA and PT are still being investigated In the mean time new learners should enroll before cut off time (LB, 30 June 2015 and LPB, 30 June 2016) Existing and new learners should complete studies before cut off time (LB, 30 June 2018 and LPB, 30 June 2019)
