HERE & NOW: 2015 APPLICATION Applications are due electronically by 5:00pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Page 1 of 5 About Here & Now Miami Light Project launched Here & Now in 1998 as a commissioning and presenting program that to supports the professional development of Miami-based artists. By commissioning, presenting and helping to tour new work by Miamibased artists, we are building an indigenous artistic spirit that is unique to Miami. Annually, 3-5 dance, theater and multimedia artists are selected for this initiative. In addition to a commissioning fee, the artists receive substantial rehearsal time in The Light Box, full production support & professional development assistance. Through Here & Now, Miami Light Project has commissioned work from more than 70 South Florida-based artists. Over 30 of those artists have gone on to perform that work in 14 states and 15 countries for an estimated audience of 20,000 people world-wide. In 2008, Miami Light Project s Here & Now program received a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a matching grant program to help transform the South Florida arts. FAQs 1. What kind of work are you seeking? Here & Now work is cutting edge, experimental and contemporary. It is often multi-disciplinary, and represents artist s pushing the envelope of their discipline and art form. 2. Who is eligible to apply? Here & Now is open to professional artists living and making work in South Florida. You must currently be living and creating work in this community to be eligible. 3. Is there a time limit on my piece or a limit to how many collaborators may I have? Here & Now is for short, new, complete work. Your piece may not exceed more than 20 minutes in length. There is no limit to the amount of collaborators you may have. 4. What is the fee offered to Here & Now artists? Here & Now artists receive a commissioning fee between $2-5,000.00, as well as free rehearsal time in Miami Light Project s Light Box Studio, full production support, a full public relations and marketing campaign for Here & Now and the premiere of their new work, as well as professional development workshops and master classes. 5. What support materials should I submit? Please submit at least 1 video or audio clip that best displays your work. Your work sample should be current, recorded in the last 1-2 years, and no longer than 10 minutes. If applicable, you may attached 2-4 press clippings or reviews of your work, however reviews are not accepted in lieu of work samples. Important: Work Samples must be submitted electronically, through services such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc. You must provide MLP with a link to view the work samples online. 6. What is the difference between my bio and my artist statement? An artist's statement is a brief text composed by an artist and intended to explain, justify, and contextualize his or her body of work and artistic vision. An artist bio is a short narrative biography of the artist that includes some resume/c.v. information that speaks about who the artist is and their personal and professional history and experience. 7. What needs to be included in the piece description? Please be as detailed as possible in your proposal, explaining both what we will see onstage, and why you are creating it; the theory and inspiration behind your work This description will allow us to have a full and deep understanding of what you would like to create. 8. What should my budget include? Please make your budget as detailed as possible; include any artist fees, rentals, set, costumes and research costs, etc. 9. What if my budget needs exceed what the commission fee is, will you give more? The commissioning fee we offer is between $2-5,000.00. If you are proposing a piece that will cost in excess of that, we still encourage you to apply, but with the understanding the rest of those monies will need to be raised from other funding sources. 10. What is the timeline for Here & Now? Applications are due in electronically in our offices by June 8, 2014. Panel review will take place in August, and artists will be notified of their selection in September 2013. Here & Now: 2015 will premiere at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse in May 2014. 11. I still have questions! Please call or email Beth Boone at 305.576.4350 or beth@miamilightproject.com to set up an appointment.
