About Maningrida The name Maningrida comes from the local Kunbidji clan name Manayingkarirra. Manayingkarirra is derived from mane djang karirra, meaning the place where the dreaming changed shape. Maningrida is located on the Central Arnhem coast at the mouth of the Liverpool River. It is 250 km west of Nhulunbuy and 352 km east of Darwin. Thirty two outstations within a 10,000 square kilometres area are serviced from Maningrida by the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation. Population It was estimated in 2006 that Maningrida had a population of 2781 people, of whom 2600 were Indigenous (93%). Of this figure, 48% of Maningrida s Indigenous population was younger than 20 years of age. Power and water Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied via a bore field south of town, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town. Broadband Satellite Internet Services Telstra 3G Mobile Coverage Television Networks Imparja, SBS, Seven Central and ABC Access Road Access to Maningrida is by 4WD or heavy vehicle via a sealed road to Cahill s Crossing, and a dirt road for a further 250km. During the wet season access is limited, with the road often closed for extended periods. The drive takes approximately seven hours from Darwin. Air AirNorth operates daily passenger services to Maningrida and lands at the sealed airstrip. Flights take an hour from Darwin and connect through to Milingimbi and Galiwinku. Sea Two Darwin-based companies provide weekly barge (sea freight) services to Maningrida throughout the year. Local government The West Arnhem Shire Council provides local government services in Maningrida. Its headquarters is located in Jabiru, with a Service Delivery Centre located in Maningrida. Land tenure Maningrida is part of Arnhem Land which is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976. Permits to enter onto Aboriginal Land are generally required and are available from the Northern Land Council. 2
