ANNUAL REPORT 2013 DRIVING ADVANCES, SHAPING THE FUTURE

02 ETH ZÜRICH FOUNDATION JAHRESBERICHT 2012 ETH ZÜRICH FOUNDATION JAHRESBERICHT 2012 INVESTING IN KNOWLEDGE AND TALENTS Dear Donors and Partners What is it that we have in common? A belief in the future. A conviction that the pursuit of innovative research and the nurturing of talents are vital in addressing the global challenges arising in areas such as health, nutrition, manufacturing or the environment. A commitment to invest wholeheartedly in Switzerland as a centre of knowledge, expertise and industry. And the certainty that every donation contributes to the growing innovative capacity and pioneering spirit of ETH Zurich. By supporting the ETH Zurich Foundation, you make it possible for extraordinary research and education projects to be carried out at ETH Zurich. You encourage outstanding performance and promote the development of new research fields, which would scarcely be possible without your support. The talented researchers who benefit from your donations enjoy the freedom they require to pursue promising ideas and discoveries with the potential to change all our lives. In 2013, some 1 800 private donors, foundations and companies expressed their commitment with personal contributions totalling CHF 91 million. These funds are earmarked for the development and strengthening of ETH priority areas. At the same time, research freedom for the professors concerned is guaranteed by our guidelines for contractual agreements. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all our donors and partners for your confidence and dedication. We are also grateful to the executive board, professors and staff of ETH Zurich for their collaboration. And, lastly, we thank the members of the Board of Trustees and the staff of the Foundation. We look forward to continuing our joint efforts to shape the future by supporting exceptional individuals and projects at ETH Zurich. Jürgen Dormann Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Donald Tillman Managing Director Benefactors make a vital contribution to the development and success of ETH Zurich. (Photo: ETH Zurich/Alessandro Della Bella) Ladies and Gentlemen budget. Private funding gives us the flexibility to tackle important topics promptly and to adopt unconventional approaches. With your donations to the ETH Zurich Foundation, you have enabled ETH Zurich to undertake projects of strategic significance. A case in point is the establishment of the Institute for Theoretical Studies. Without the initial support provided by the ETH Zurich Foundation and its partners, it would scarcely have been possible to realize this dream. To take another example, contributions to the Pioneer Fellowship programme have given young entrepreneurs the opportunity to bring their discoveries and inventions to the market, which will also benefit society at large. One further example: the establishment of new professorships in thematic priority areas such as medtech or building systems will strengthen research and teaching for years to come. For generously supporting these and many other initiatives, our donors deserve our heartfelt thanks. We have been able to make significant advances in many fields, to generate new knowledge and to strengthen Switzerland s position as a centre of research and industry. In these achievements, you, the ETH Zurich Foundation and our various funding partners continue to play a decisive role. ETH Zurich trains thousands of scientists and engineers every year, carries out innovative research in pursuit of new discoveries and technologies, and is actively committed to the transfer of knowledge to society. For these activities, we receive solid financial support from the federal Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler President of ETH Zurich, Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the ETH Zurich Foundation

04 ETH ZURICH FOUNDATION PROMOTING INNOVATION ETH ZURICH FOUNDATION ENJOYING RESEARCH FREEDOM 05 PURSUING NEW APPROACHES Support provided by private donors, foundations and companies allows ETH Zurich to implement teaching and research initiatives rapidly and effectively in strategic areas. In this process, the ETH Zurich Foundation serves as a hub for donors and partners concerns and as a catalyst for ETH Zurich s efforts. By acting together, we can continue to strengthen ETH Zurich s position as a global leader and to enhance Switzerland s attractiveness as an economic centre. The ETH Zurich Foundation and its partners focus exclusively on ETH Zurich s strategic priorities, supporting projects of the highest quality which require start-up funding to get off the ground. Your support allows ETH Zurich to maintain and expand its position as a global leader. By investing in innovative projects, bold ideas and pioneering efforts in research, fostering excellence and entrepreneurship, we will continue to make it possible for the most highly sought-after experts and talents to be trained at ETH Zurich, thus strengthening Switzerland as a centre of knowledge and industry.
