COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Master of Biomedical Sciences HEALTH PROFESSIONS DIVISION Entering Class 2015

MASTER OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES The College of Medical Sciences joins the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Optometry, Health Care Sciences, Dental Medicine, and Nursing as one of the prime educational institutions in NSU s Health Professions Division. The Master of Biomedical Sciences (M.B.S.) is a program that allows students to demonstrate that they can be successful in either the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine or College of Dental Medicine. Students are trained in human biology and medicine to improve their academic credentials in order to be considered for admission to our professional schools. Those enrolled in this degree program take basic science courses, along with current dental and osteopathic medicine students. Courses offered include gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Students who have successfully completed one year in this program will be considered for admission into the College of Dental Medicine or the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, pending a completed application to the respective program. M.B.S. students who have successfully finished two years of this program will receive a Master of Biomedical Sciences degree, and then will be considered for admission to NSU s College of Osteopathic Medicine or College of Dental Medicine, after completing an application to the respective professional program. The Master of Biomedical Sciences degree program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). FACULTY The College of Medical Sciences is staffed with 32 faculty members, most of whom possess doctoral degrees in their fields. Because of the small size of the master s degree program, there is an opportunity for small group instruction and for a close working relationship with an adviser and other members of the science faculty.

DESCRIPTION OF FACILITIES The Health Professions Division (HPD) occupies 21 acres and 900,000 square feet of space on the Nova Southeastern University main campus. The HPD s seven colleges are based in a five-story administration building, with the upper floors consisting of the colleges headquarters, division administration, and faculty offices. The first floor is studentrelated, devoted to the Office of Admissions, the Office of Student Financial Assistance, and a cafeteria. Just north of the administration building is the assembly building. This consists of a 500-seat auditorium; a 250-seat auditorium; and eight 126-seat, amphitheater-style classrooms. Connected to this is a three-story library/ laboratory building. On the first floor is a 20,000-square-foot library with a 100-seat classroom devoted to cardiac teaching using HARVEY, a computerized heart-sound mannequin that duplicates the signs and symptoms of most normal and abnormal heart conditions. Patient simulation training rooms and a 50-station computer laboratory for student use are also on the first floor. The second and third floors house laboratories, a student lounge, and a research area. Just north of the library/laboratory building is the medical services building with facilities for primary health care, rehabilitative services, and primary and secondary eye care. A three-story building houses the College of Dental Medicine s educational facilities and clinics. Just south of the dental building, the university has a building with a 300-seat auditorium and study rooms for students. Behind these structures is an 1,800-vehicle parking garage, readily accessible to the university community. Health Professions Division 1

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CURRICULUM Required coursework for the first year consists mainly of basic science classes taught in the Health Professions Division such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and microbiology. The semester hour requirements in the second year are similar to the first year. The college reserves the right to vary these hours within reason. In addition, all students are required to attend a seminar course. The Master of Biomedical Sciences (M.B.S.) degree takes four semesters to complete. A minimum of 36 semester hours is required for completion of the program. A time limit of five calendar years from the date of matriculation is placed on coursework to be credited to the degree. 2 Nova Southeastern University
