EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EVERGREEN VALLEY COLLEGE MISSION With equity, opportunity and social justice as our guiding principles, Evergreen Valley College s mission is to empower and prepare students from diverse backgrounds to succeed academically and to be civically responsible global citizens. We meet our mission through a wide spectrum of educational experiences, flexible methodologies, and support services for our students. OVERVIEW Nestled in the eastern foothills of San José, Evergreen Valley College (EVC) sits on a 175-acre site serving 9,000 students from San Jose, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and other surrounding communities within the Silicon Valley. EVC is enriched with a diversity of cultures, ethnicities and languages that are reflective of the community it serves. GOAL
Equity is not about treating students equally, rather, Equity is about providing each student with the opportunities he/she needs to be successful. Given this premise, EVC affirms that the main goal of the Student Equity Plan is to promote student success and close the achievement gap for student populations at risk. The College commits to provide students with a quality education and to offer the necessary opportunities and resources needed in order for students to persist from developmental education to transfer level, obtain an AA or AS, attain a certificate and/or transfer to university. Furthermore, the College agrees to foster a sensitive and safe environment for all students, regardless of differences in culture, language, religion beliefs, sexual orientation and/or immigration status. EVC commits to value differences and treat all individuals with dignity and respect. PROCESS With the sanction and direction of the Student Success Committee, a group of faculty, staff and managers were selected to form part of Student Equity Planning Sub-Committee and designated to develop the Student Equity Plan. The sub-committee would report and review progress of the plan at every standing meeting of the Student Success Committee. The Student Success Committee comprised of faculty, staff, students and management meets the first and third Thursday of the month. The committee is co-chaired by the Dean of Student Success and an instruction faculty from the Language Department. Development, evaluation and monitoring of this plan fall under the scope of the Student Success Committee; while planning, coordination, implementation and administering of the plan is the direct responsibility of the Dean of Student Success and the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs. TARGET GROUPS In preparation for the development of EVC s Student Equity Plan, San Jose Evergreen Community College District s (SJECCD) Department of Institutional Effectiveness and Student Success followed the guidelines as prescribed by the California Community College Chancellor s Office Student Equity Plan in gathering, organizing, and analyzing data. The summary of the data analysis identifying targeted populations is as follows. Throughout this analysis, disaggregated groups with cell sizes less than 50 are indicated with a double asterisk (**). ACCESS In accordance to the Chancellor s Office, Access is defined as: Compare the percentage of each population group that is enrolled to the percentage of each group in the adult population within the community served. 5
EVC Goal: Establish access opportunities for at risk students with particular emphasis on foster youth, military/veterans, low-income and DREAMers. COURSE COMPLETION In accordance to the Chancellor s Office, Course Completion is defined as: The ratio of the number of credit courses that students by population group actually complete by the end of the term compared to the number of courses in which students in that group are enrolled on the census day of the term. Course Completion is the percentage of first-time students with a minimum of 6 units earned who attempted any Math or English in the first three years and achieved the following measure of progress (or milestone) within six years of entry: earned at least 30 units in the CCC system). EVC Goal: Increase completion rates of degree and certificate for the following disproportionately impacted student populations: Foster Youth, Veterans, African American, Latino, Filipino, DSP and adults over 40 years of age. ESL & BASIC SKILLS COMPLETION In accordance to the Chancellor s Office, ESL & Basic Skills Completion is defined as: The ratio of the number of students by population group who complete a degree-applicable course after having completed the final ESL or basic skills course to the number of those students who complete such a final course. EVC Goal: Improve persistence and retention rate among underprepared student populations who enroll in ESL, Basic Skills Math and English courses, particularly African American, Latino, Filipino, DSP and adults over 40 years of age. DEGREE & CERTIFICATE COMPLETION In accordance to the Chancellor s Office, Degree & Certificate Completion is defined as: The ratio of the number of students by population group who receive a degree or certificate to the number of students in that group with the same informed matriculation goal EVC Goal: Increase degree and certificate completion rates for EOPS, DSP, Foster Youth, African Americans, and students over 40 years of age. TRANSFER In accordance to the Chancellor s Office, Transfer is defined as: 6
The ratio of the number of students by population group who complete a minimum of 12 units and have attempted a transfer level course in mathematics or English to the number of students in that group who actually transfer after one or more (up to six) years EVC Goal: To establish awareness and a culture of transfer by engaging the entire campus community to increase transfer completion rates for categorical programs and all students regardless of group membership. RESOURCES BUDGETED At EVC, Student Success and Equity are an institutional priority and responsibility. Therefore, activities identified in the Student Equity Plan will be funded and supported by the general college fund, categorical programs, specially funded programs and other federally funded grants. Support will come either through direct funding or in-kind resources and support. Collaborative opportunities with internal and external partners will be sought out for either shared or in-kind resources.
