March 23 Massaging Patients with Cancer 8CE hrs Instructor: Holly Pinto, LMT, NCTMB 9-6pm - $200.00 This class will teach massage students how to appropriately work with clients living with or surviving cancer. Comfort-oriented massage touch can be administered to people with cancer regardless of the severity of their condition. This seminar will train massage therapists in the basics of oncology massage. Therapists who focus on hospice and hospital work will also find this seminar to be valuable for their special needs patients. April 28 Differentiating Pain Syndromes (6 CE hrs, 9-3pm) Instructor: Dr. Ashley Gaines - $150.00 Individuals usually present with stereotypical, yet general, pain patterns, such as "low back pain", "foot pain", "elbow pain", etc. However, the etiology of this pain can differ amongst clients. Lateral elbow pain, for example, can commonly be from muscuolo-tendinous irritation (lateral epicondylitis), peripheral nerve entrapment (PIN syndrome) or nerve root irritation by a cervical disc problem or spinal degeneration. Therefore, the objective of this course is to present the most common etiologies of common pain presentation patterns. After successful completion of this course, the student will be better equipped to infer the tissue of origin that is responsible for their client s pain. In addition to this, the competent therapist will be able to better understand the referral and comanagement options for their clients who are unresponsive to their care, and to recognize client 'Red Flags' and 'Yellow Flags'. This course IS NOT intended to train the massage therapist to in any way diagnose musculoskeletal complaints; rather, it is intended to prepare the therapist to provide a higher quality service to their client and to recognize the need for more prompt referral to another licensed health care provider. Topographical anatomy serves a crucial didactic role, however, regions such as thigh leg and shoulder are incomplete simplifications that omit the key role that fascia plays in load transfer across body regions. This course will emphasize study of the superficial and deep fascia of the body and aim to educate the student on how this fascia functions to connect distant anatomical regions. A review of relevant muscular structures will be provided prior to the study of individual fascial systems. Knowledge of fascial anatomy in addition to gross musculoskeletal anatomy will better equip the therapist to understand the etiology of their clients pain and dysfunction.
