April 28 Differentiating Pain Syndromes (6 CE hrs, 9-3pm) Instructor: Dr. Ashley Gaines - $150.00 Individuals usually present with stereotypical, yet general, pain patterns, such as "low back pain", "foot pain", "elbow pain", etc. However, the etiology of this pain can differ amongst clients. Lateral elbow pain, for example, can commonly be from muscuolo-tendinous irritation (lateral epicondylitis), peripheral nerve entrapment (PIN syndrome) or nerve root irritation by a cervical disc problem or spinal degeneration. Therefore, the objective of this course is to present the most common etiologies of common pain presentation patterns. After successful completion of this course, the student will be better equipped to infer the tissue of origin that is responsible for their client s pain. In addition to this, the competent therapist will be able to better understand the referral and comanagement options for their clients who are unresponsive to their care, and to recognize client 'Red Flags' and 'Yellow Flags'. This course IS NOT intended to train the massage therapist to in any way diagnose musculoskeletal complaints; rather, it is intended to prepare the therapist to provide a higher quality service to their client and to recognize the need for more prompt referral to another licensed health care provider.
