Course Information Western Anatomy and Physiology: 65 hours In this course of study, the anatomy structures and their function are studied as one unit. The course is divided into the following: Cells & Tissues Integumentary (Skin) Skeletal Muscular Nervous Circulatory & Lymph Immune Respiratory Endocrine Digestive Excretory/Urinary Reproductive Lab projects will be done to further grasp the knowledge. Example: Using snack food to design part of the cell; play dough to create the glands of the endocrine system; bands to form muscles on a skeleton, and more. The goal is to deliver the information verbally in lecture along with written material, to show information in charts, models and DVD graphics, and then to recreate what has been learned by constructing it with each student s hands-on participation. The textbook will be accompanied by a workbook. Supplemental DVD lectures, given by Dr. Goodman, will also be available to students for home study. 9 9
Western Massage Theory & Technique: 90 hours An historical overview of the use of some form of massage in all cultures as a form of medicine helps us understand the role massage has played in the origins of medicine. Only when we understand where we have been can we clearly see the road we are now on. History allows us to learn and grow so not to fall prey to the same mistakes or misjudgments. It also lets us understand how medicinal practices in all cultures share similar basic concepts about health, healing and dysfunction. The philosophy of Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy is that of an Integrated Medicine Model. Massage therapy is not an alternative or a complementary treatment. It is part of an integrated whole. The goal is to think in terms of health care when addressing the needs of clients. Our role is to provide the education and specialized techniques the massage therapy profession has to offer when working with clients and other health care professionals of both allopathic and alternative medicine. Therefore, it is necessary for us to know the medical language, the allopathic structure and function of various branches of medicine and the terminology within those forms of health care currently considered to be alternative or complementary. It is also vital we know specialized training within our own profession. Awareness of the various health care modalities allows us to use educated judgment in the health referral process. At its core belief, Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy training believes the body has the ability to heal itself. Our role is to assist this healing capacity. Assisting this capacity also involves client education. If we can empower our clients to do self-care practices and to take the leading role in their health care, then we have done a great service. Our main goal is to assist and guide, not to assume a role of control. Our profession is diverse in its offerings. A massage therapist may find themselves in a spa setting, a medical environment or the vast possibilities that lie in between. In all settings it is important for the massage therapist to be educated, skilled and have the ability to make sound judgments. Understanding the indications and contraindications of massage is vital to the safety of the clients whom we serve. 0
The foundational massage technique the student will be taught is Swedish massage. Therapeutic applications will focus on Myofascial-based massage. This will include structure and function of the fascial system, assessment techniques and therapy application. The concepts of the Myofascial Trains or Meridians taught by educator and author, Tom Meyers, will be introduced in addition to the therapy approach of John Barnes Myofascial Release Therapy. An introduction to Integrative Craniosacral Massage will be given. However, to practice this technique as a stand-alone modality, more training is necessary. Hydrotherapy basic training on benefits of heat therapies and cold application. Western Pathology & Medical Terminology: 60 hours The student will be exposed to medical terminology, disease conditions, disorders and imbalances of the human body. It is important for a massage therapist to know how the medical profession views these imbalances and the treatment process, which is usually suggested and implemented by the doctor. For a massage therapist to work within this medical model or perform massage therapy on someone with pathological conditions it is vital to have an understanding of how these disorders and disease affect the human body. It is part of our code of ethics to educate clients about the indication or contraindication of massage and bodywork so the client can make an informed decision when receiving massage services. Massage is not appropriate for certain conditions. Sometimes it is necessary to work with a physician for client care.
It may also be necessary to obtain a doctor release when someone is under the care of a physician for a particular disease or disorder. This allows the client to discuss the massage treatment with their physician. If there are no contraindications to massage therapy, the physician will give a release stating no conflict exists with the particular application of massage therapy. Physician referrals of a patient to the massage therapist for care, as part of the medical or health care team, will become more common when massage therapist can show knowledge and competency in working with patients with pathological conditions or special needs. Not only is it important to understand the disease and disorders that affect the body, it is also important to understand the physiological changes the body goes through when protecting or healing itself. The role of inflammation, pain and immune reaction to infectious processes play in the body s design will aid our judgment as massage therapist in when to be involved in the process and when to let the body go through its process without the added stress of intervention. Western Theory Assessment and Treatment Plans: 35 hours Record keeping and documentation of client files Intake and Health History forms Consultation skills and obtaining informed consent Assess physical structure and give recommendation for a therapy process Referring your client to another health practitioner when further assessment or therapy is needed (SOAP) practices for therapeutic sessions Charting Heart Saver CPR A First Aid: 0 hours Certification is required by the Iowa State Board for Massage Therapy Hands-on training in emergency first aid and CPR 2
3 Professional Ethics and Business Practices: 60 hours Understanding the fundamentals of business Massage Therapy scope of practice and Iowa law Educational standards Boundaries personal and professional Therapeutic relationships Personal and professional character building Ethical business practices and behavior Employment opportunities Independent contractor VS employee status Finances required Choosing a location for your business or working within other locations Choosing a name and image Education, promotion and advertising to the public Promotional materials Legal issues, insurance Bookkeeping Client retention Networking with others Finding a niche specialized training Diversify your practice retail Being a resource to clients and the community 3
4 Elective Courses: 40 hours Students will have the opportunity for specialized training in two areas of interest from our elective course options. This training will be scheduled outside of regular class-time hours. Upon completion, a certificate will be issued recognizing this specialized training addition to the core curriculum fundamentals.. Aromatherapy Massage & Bodywork Student will have completed Introduction to Aromatherapy prior to this training. Basic categories of use and appropriate application Aromatherapy Treatment Demonstration and hands-on learning Professional Ethics and Business Basics for this type of skill 2. Hot Stone Massage Heat application using specially selected stones as the source of heat. Stones are applied to the body in a Swedish massage style and used as a hot pack placement where additional heat is needed. Indications, contraindications and temperature regulation for various conditions are vital for the student to understand before performing a Stone Therapy Massage. 3. Inspirational Touch Therapy This training is focused on the development of the student. To perform this Touch Therapy it is important that the student s presence and touch be delicately refined in addition to social skills appropriate for this work. 4
5 4. Integrated Energy Therapy Student will have completed structured classroom hours before learning this skill. Assessment of subtle energy flow and listening skills are the base of this training. Unique treatment skills are developed based on the information assessments and draws on aspects of both Western and Eastern Theory and Techniques. Eastern Massage Theory & Technique: 70 hours Energetics of Healing: Understanding the distribution & use of energy. Foundational understanding of Aromatherapy and basic use. The Chinese Medicine Model will be examined and basic principles learned. Common Acupressure Points will be learned for integration into other therapies. Reflexology Massage, which combines the philosophy of Reflexology reflex areas on the feet correspond to organs, tissues and functions of the body Myofacial and Swedish massage into its base application. In order to have a holistic understanding of the body, it is necessary to explore the Eastern-based concepts of medicine and health. Eastern thought looks at the relationships that exist all around and inside of us. At our core we are energy. Health is reflected by the management, distribution and balance of this energy. How we think, what we believe, emotions we feel, judgments we make and relationships we have affect our management of this vital energy. 5
6 As a Massage Therapist it is critical that we understand this holistic concept as we are stepping into an energy flow of another person. There is wisdom in understanding this energy flow so that we have skills in the management, distribution and use of our own energy. We need to be mindful, centered and in the right space before giving a massage or bodywork session to another. Clinical Application: 20 hours Each student will be required to complete 20 hours of on-site clinical massage. Clinical training gives the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skill learned in a professional massage therapy setting. Clients participating in this clinical experience will fill out an evaluation form for the student giving the clinical massage. The instructor will use the information of the evaluation forms to offer suggestions, concerns and to praise the emerging talent of the student therapist. The instructor will also site areas in need of refinement. When the student demonstrates the ethical behavior, skill of knowledge and personal presence during their professional interaction with clinic clients, they will pass the clinical portion of their training. Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy will supply the equipment and Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy shirt for clinicals, for those who do not choose to wear a uniform or scrubs. The students will be responsible for supplying their own laundered sheets, towels robes and slippers. Students will also provide their own cream, oil and other topical products, providing they are approved for use by the school. Guiding Light will assist the student in building the clients for clinicals, however, as part of business practices, students will need to learn how to find clients and, most important, retain client support. 6
7 Instruction Format Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy s 750-hour certification course includes 630 supervised classroom instruction hours and 20 independently scheduled instructor-supervised clinical application hours. Classroom Instruction (Academic). Lecture Instructors follow a basic textbook guideline for each course. Required reading and workbook assignments will follow the textbook format. Lecture aids will include DVD and video visual aids and supplemental information. Charts and models will also be used in presentation as lecture aid material. 2. Lab Projects Students will recreate the anatomy of the body with art creations. Unique study aids will be made to help assimilate the academic information. 3. Demonstration Instructors will use hands-on visual aids to demonstrate course instruction. DVDs and video aids will also be used for demonstration purposes. 4. Role-playing Students will practice the client/therapist relationship and professional relationship with other health care practitioners who are invited into the training process to assist the student in developing skills. 7
5. Presentation 8 Students will work independently on their community service projects. The instructor will offer time outside of regular class time to assist the student in the planning state of the project. Once the project has been completed, the student will give the instructor, classmates and other massage therapists a presentation. This exercise will allow the student to gain experience giving educational and informative presentations to community group organizations or to health care facility personnel. 6. Hands-on Learning Students will learn by utilizing their hands in these different areas: Techniques and basic routines Palpation Assessing range of motion and restriction Feeling the tissues Interacting with Chi 7. Independent project (Business Plan) Student will learn how to construct a business plan. Student will learn to set goals and organize his or her thoughts into practical action. 8. Resource Materials Guiding Light has a library with a variety of books, magazines, educational videos, DVDs, CDs and computer software available onsite for the student to use. 9. Heart Saver CPR & First Aid Heart Saver CPR and First Aid class is through the Jefferson County Health Center in cooperation with Guiding Light School of Massage Therapy. 8
9 0. Practicum (Clinical Application) Clinical hours will begin once the student has successfully performed basic Swedish massage and has the needed consultation/assessment skills appropriate for Swedish massage. As the student gains experience with client contact and successfully performs each of the modalities taught, the student will infuse these skills into the Basic Swedish Routine or offer a treatment using the modality learned. At the end of the training, the student will demonstrate the ability to perform a Therapeutic massage using various techniques he or she has learned by testing out with the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to conduct Clinical Massage Therapy sessions in a private practice setting, which simulates the environment a student will establish in their own practice. Students will conduct themselves as if it is their business practice. Each student will have a private/quiet room for clinical training. This is unlike other school settings that establish an assembly line clinical training setting with very little privacy that does not imitate a professional practice setting. Elective Course Studies Students will have demonstrated the skill appropriate to the elective course level to receive a certification for that particular elective. Student will be required to demonstrate skill by doing either a case study of 8 session hours or a variety of clinical sessions which total 8 hours. 9
