Making a Website with Hoolahoop 1) Open up your web browser and goto www.wgss.ca/admin (wgss.hoolahoop.net temporarily) and login your the username and password. (wgss.ca is for teachers ONLY, you cannot give out login info to students!) 2) You should see a list off all the pages on our website. You need to navigate to the page you have access to, which will be under teacher s sites, then under your department(s). I ll use C Fast as an example. 3) You now have 2 choices: 1) Clicking the [E] will allow you to edit the properties of your homepage (the layout, etc.) or the more popular option 2) Click on your name and you ll be able to edit your website! Note: by default, each teacher only has rights to edit their page, tech contacts have rights to edit pages in their departments (to be able to help you if you need help) 4) Here we go, time to make a website! By clicking on your name, you will be brought to an actual preview of your website. With the Hoolahoop editor, what you see is what you get. You are now looking at your website - and yes, it s blank. 5) You should see little green, these let you add content to your page. Mousing over one will pop up a widget that lets you add to your website. 6) 99% of the time, you ll choose Item. This will allow you to add text, images and links to your website. As you get more experienced with this editor, feel free to try other things. 7) Once you've created content, you'll see 3 new icons appear. This lets you copy the content to paste it on another page (using this button to paste), you can copy paste info from anypage on wgss.ca!! This lets you move the content around your page, to reorganize it This lets you edit the content
7) An image of the editor is shown below. While it may look complicated, it is VERY scalable. If you only want to do the basics, simply type into the editor, name this post and click save and you ve just made your first Hoolahoop website!! If you want to get more complicated and use anchors or tables, it can do that too. These 2 buttons allow you to add links or images AND upload those images to the webserver, more on these later This is where you are going to either type or paste text into. If you are pasting text from Microsoft Word, use the paste from word button above. Above you will see many familiar word processing icons. If you re not sure what a button does, simply mouse over it. The Style pull-down lets you pick some preset fonts and colors that fit into the style of the wgss website.
Uploading Images and Files 1) With Hoolahoop you can do all your uploading right from your browser. 2) To upload files, you need to click on the button from the top navigation. 3)This will popup a file browsing window, click JUMP TO MY FOLDER, this will bring you to your private folder on the server where you'll be able to upload files. 4) Click the big blue Browse Files button and navigate to the file / files that you want to upload; and YES you can upload multiple files all at one time! 5) Once the files are uploaded you'll head back into the content editor to link to the files (See Below) 6) Back in the content editor (that we showed off last page) you'll want to click either: Insert a link or Insert a picture and then create a link to the files we've just uploaded. The following window will popup, click the browse server button (below) and navigate to your files (see next page for more info)
1) Once you click the Browse Server button (as described on the previous page), the window below will appear. 2) Click the "myusers" link below and look for your name. 3) Once you click on your name, you'll see the files you uploaded, click the one you want to make a link to and then click OK. Remember to click the button when you're done.
Adding Pages to Your Website 1) As you get more comfortable with Hoolahoop, you ll probably want to try adding pages to your website. For example, I have made a page for each of the courses I teach. The pages can be accessed through a flyout menu or by clicking on your name. 2) You have access rights to add as many pages to your own name as you want. 3) To add a new page, simply click the in Hoolahoop. This will bring up the following window. 4) Name your page - for example: Animation 11. Then from the Page Parent pull down list, find your name (teachers sites, department, name) and click it. Most of the other settings don't need to be changed. 5) If you wish to have this link to an external (non-hoolahoop page, for example a marks page) you would click the External Link and paste in the URL 6) Once you ve created your page, you ll be brought to the preview of it, then you can start adding your information. 7) You can only make one more level past your name, there is no way to make a second page off the page you just made. 8) The pages are listed in the order that you create them, NOT alphabetically. Use the purple arrow icon to reorder your pages 9) If you want to change the layout or the name of the page you just created, it is possible, simply click the "e" next to the page
Adding a Marks Page with 1) Using Easy Grade Pro you can create a website that students and parents can log into and check their current marks. We will not cover how to do that, but there are lots of people around the school doing it, seek them out and ask for help. 2) Once you've setup EGP and it's done creating your website, you're usually left with a folder (I'll call that folder marks). 3) We're going to be using dropbox to upload and host these files. You need to goto dropbox.com and sign up. You'll get a free 2GB of webspace (that can be used for all sorts of different purposes). Download and install the application and it will create a folder on your computer (PC or MAC) called dropbox. 4) Anything that you place in the dropbox folder is uploaded to the internet, automatically. Everything in the main folder of dropbox is completely private and can only be accessed by you, but you'll notice that there is a public folder, this is where we want to copy our EGP marks folder to. It will take a few minutes for dropbox to sync and upload to the internet. 5) Inside the marks folder that you've placed inside the dropbox/public folder, you'll see a file called index.html. Right click on that file and choose dropbox, copy public link.' 6) Now that you've got the URL, you can put that into Hoolahoop in several different ways: a) By adding content, highlighting that content and clicking the Insert/Edit link button, and then pasting it in the URL dialogue box (MAKE SURE YOU DON"T HAVE 2 HTTP://) b) Or by creating a new page (as demonstrated on the previous page), picking External Link and pasting the link into the Page URL and again, avoid having 2 http's (http://http://dropbox...)
