First Alternative Position Description Title: CASHIER Wage Scale: 12 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Supervisor: Front End Assistant Manager Department: Front End Existing Position: X Effective Date: July 1995 Revision Date: January 2011 Approved by: Cindee Lolik Date: 2/8/11 Position Summary: Cashiers are the face of the Co-op in their daily interactions with customers and are responsible for creating a positive experience for shoppers while at First Alternative. They are in charge of ringing up customer purchases, providing excellent customer service, informing customers about owner shares and various programs offered by the Co-op. Being accurate, upholding policies and procedures, and being able to remain calm during somewhat stressful situations are key requirements for this position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to learn to operate cash register and all credit/debit card machines Knowledge of 10 key operation is helpful Basic understanding of money handling Excellent communication skills Demonstrated ability to work under pressure Previous natural foods experience preferred Ability to learn all federal regulations as they relate to Food Stamps, WIC, OLCC Excellent interpersonal skills Of legal age to sell alcohol (18 yrs) Ability to provide excellent customer service and interact with a wide variety of customers Willingness and ability to grow to meet the changing requirements of the job ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Cashiering Accurately enter prices and product categories at the register. Able to use store wide paging system for price checks, as necessary. Communicate with appropriate departments regarding price discrepancies. Accurately give appropriate discounts, process coupons and accept tender options. Complete required paperwork to process special orders, merchandise returns, debit/credit card or Oregon Trail card transactions, WIC transactions, etc. Maintain accurate paperwork throughout shift, and reconcile drawer as necessary Maintain the physical appearance of the cash register area. This includes cleaning countertops, organizing and stocking bags, returning carts, baskets and clipboards, and sweeping and dusting Educate customers about owner shares Keep customer line count at 2-3, by paging for cashier back-up as necessary Page 1 of 2

Read and stay current with the Cashier and Staff Log Books Maintain familiarity with products, their location and monthly specials Continually increase number of produce PLU numbers memorized and take initiative to stay current with seasonal produce Find productive Front End tasks to do between customer transactions Provide assistance and additional on-the-job training to new staff cashiers Customer Service Greet customers in a friendly manner; respond quickly and courteously to all requests from customers Direct customers to Customer Service desk for additional services or problem-solving Assist Customer Service representatives as needed Answer product questions, or page appropriate staff for answers Offer to bag customer groceries, assist customers with small children and page for help in carrying heavy groceries out for customers as appropriate Educate customers about all Co-op programs and provide related services (Beans for Bags, Coffee Cards, Alternative Transport Cards, Special Orders, etc) Team Work Communicate with co-workers on a daily basis about department changes or concerns Attend and contribute to department meetings Respect the common work space (e.g. clean-up at end of shift, maintain organization of assigned till at the register area, suggest improvements, etc) Maintain a pleasant, helpful relationship with co-workers and contribute to a positive work environment General Fill out paperwork notifying appropriate staff when equipment needs attention.
