AT THE EDGE OF OCEAN AND OPPORTUNITY ABOUT UVIC This is a place where the curious come together to learn, to imagine and to transform. Where Canada s brightest minds and innovative scholarship meet an engaged, altruistic student body on the stunning west coast of Canada. Our campus is full of green spaces, modern buildings, thoughtfully-designed lecture and lab facilities and state-of-the-art libraries. We re proud to be a community of ambitious individuals who study, live and work in one of the most unique and stimulating campus environments in the world. UVic is a community of leaders who are inspired and motivated by their imaginations. We ve nurtured forward-thinking minds from all over the world for more than 50 years and our graduate students and faculty have a diverse legacy of achievement, working on original research that contributes to the world around them. ABOUT VICTORIA Perched at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia is a modern capital of nearly 400,000 and one of the most liveable cities on the planet. Renowned for its cultural heritage, outdoors lifestyle and community-driven neighbourhoods, it s easy to find your place here. With unparalleled access to mountains, forests and ocean and one of the mildest climates in Canada, ours is the perfect home for year-round hiking, cycling and kayaking. If it s urban living you re after, there s a robust arts and music scene and a coffee and culinary culture fed by local farms and outdoor markets. When you need your big-city fix, Victoria is a gateway to nearby Vancouver, BC and Seattle, WA. If it s contemplation and nature you re seeking, head for the beaches of Tofino or the spectacular West Coast Trail. #1 ranking first in Canada and 20th in the world among universities 50 years old or younger, according to the Times Higher Education 200+ student clubs and course unions to help you exercise your passions at UVic. We offer a range of health and athletic classes, a competitive and social intramurals program and one of the largest fitness and weight centres in Western Canada. 6 C average winter temperature. We re the second sunniest city in British Columbia and our average annual rainfall is only 24 inches. Annette Alber Germany Joint PhD Studies in Biology Centre for Forest Biology University of Victoria, Canada Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Strasbourg, France Annette Alber s research focuses on the genetic and biochemical make up of poplar trees, specifically the characterization of the CYP98A gene family. She s interested in the evolution of plant natural products and and how humans can benefit from them. I love UVic and the cultural diversity here. It s a smaller university but the opportunity to work closely with your supervisors is amazing - it s personalized learning at its best. The quality of the lectures and course material is exceptional, the process very clear and the people are typically Canadian; warm, friendly and always willing to help you out.
