GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION: A. Course Description: This course is required for all law enforcement and criminal justice majors. Topics in this course address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. Students receive career counseling and state-mandated requirements for entering law enforcement and criminal justice students. Information will be presented that will provide students with career options and motivation for success. Students will be fingerprinted and processed for a criminal history check through the Department of Public Safety. B. Course Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes/objectives are determined by local occupational need an business and industry trends. Specific goals/objectives of this course are to: Involve law enforcement and criminal justice majors in career counseling Discuss college and career success tactics and techniques; Complete state-mandated fingerprinting and criminal history check that are requisites to enrollment in special skill classes; Identify current events, skills, knowledge, and or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the criminal justice career field; Permit students opportunity to investigate various career paths in this discipline; Provide advisement and counseling for degree tracking and a rationale for course scheduling; Acquaint students with college "links" that aid in success; Acquaint students with grading G.P.A. and "Honors Criteria; Acquaint students with College Catalog and "how to make college class schedule."
C. Course Competencies: Upon successful completion of this course, each student will have completed the following goals with a 100% accomplishment: Be fingerprinted and complete a criminal history record check through the Department of Public Safety. Individuals who have adverse findings will be counseled relative to their career goals and specific restricted classes. Complete a computer disc that contains personal history and file information including photograph. Complete a college degree plan. Complete a personal inventory checklist related to career goals. Demonstrate ability to access agencies and personnel who provide instructional assistance at South Plains College. D, Academic Integrity: It is the aim of the Law Enforcement faculty of South Plains Colleges to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension. Students should refer to the SPC General Catalog policy regarding consequences for cheating and plagiarism (see "Academic Integrity" as well as "Student Conduct" sections in college catalog). At times, working with other students is encouraged for some assignments and meets SCANS competencies C-9 through C-14. If you have a question as to whether you may work with other students on any assignment, ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR. E. SCANS and Foundation Skills. This course covers SCANS Occupational Competencies C-1,4,5,6,7,8,9,18 and Foundation Skills F-2,5,10,11,14,15,1617. F. Verification of Workplace Competencies. Successful completion of this course permits qualified students to enroll for specifically restricted skill courses that can lead to TCLEOSE Licensure. Students who do not meet criteria for restricted enrollment will be counseled regarding their workplace competencies and career goals/objectives. II. SPECIFIC COURSE/INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS: A. Textbook and Other Materials: Program Syllabus Book provided by instructor. (Note: Lab fees paid for this course include the cost of the DPS Background Investigation and the Program Syllabus Book & Computer Disc.) B. Attendance Policy. The South Plains College attendance policy is stated in the General Catalog. Punctual and regular attendance in class is required of all law enforcement/criminal justice students. Each student is responsible for all class work covered while he or she was not in class. At the discretion of the instructor, a student may complete make-up work assignments for unavoidable absences. The instructor uses discretion to administer a "X" or "F" grade when a student has excessive absences. In the event a student is not able to complete course work, he or she is expected to take initiative to initiate a student withdrawal notice that results in a "W" grade when completed before the last college "drop date." All students must complete or remain in compliance with TASP requirements.
C. Assignment Policy. All required work must be turned in on time in order that the student may benefit from the corrections and study for future examinations. Assigned outside work is DUE ON THE CLASS PERIOD ASSIGNED. Late work generally is not acceptable; however, special consideration is subject to instructor discretion for exceptional circumstances. The instructor has sole discretion whether the exception is cleared and whether or not the work is acceptable. D. Grading Policy/Procedure and/or methods of evaluation. See the General College Catalog "Grade and Reports" for explanation of grades and grade point averages. The course instructor will introduce the college grading policy and method to determine G.P.A during this course of instruction. Grades for this course will be awarded following the following criteria: GRADING GUIDELINE: Student Completes ALL Assignments ON TIME: and Attends 90% of Scheduled Classes Student Completes ALL Assignments ON TIME and Attends 80% of Scheduled Classes Student Completes ALL Assignments And Attends 75% of Scheduled Classes Student Does Not Complete ALL Assignments Grade A B C F E. Special Requirements--Safety Policy. Students should adhere to safety standards established in the SPC Student Handbook. Students in law enforcement/criminal justice must follow all safe practices in the Firing Range and other laboratory work areas. Further, chemical hazards and appropriate MSDS safety practices will be covered by the instructor during the first class session if potential for exposure exists. III. COURSE OUTLINE A.
