Dowd Campus Office Hours: Room 3320, Extension 5162, MWF 12:15PM 1:15 PM TR 1200 PM 1:00 PM Meeting Time: MWF 8:00 AM 8:55 AM Meeting Location: 3247 Semester Length: 15 weeks Prerequisites: Introduction to Criminal Justice (ADJ 101) (For ADJ Majors) Credit Hours: Three (3) Text: Trusted Criminals, David O. Friedrichs, Thomson/Wadsworth, 2 nd Edition, 2004 Required Reading: The professor will provide additional reading assignments. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course centers on the analysis of non-violent criminal behavior that uses the assumption of trust to engage in criminal conduct. Topics of discussion include: public corruption, fraud against the government, environmental crimes, corporate fraud, and other types of types of criminal deception to include computer fraud are also discussed. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Define the term White Collar Crime. Identify the various types of White Collar Crime. Explain the impact of White Collar Crime on the national and international economy. Provide investigative strategies for the White Collar Crime investigator. Discuss victim-offender relationships and vulnerability of victims. Discuss governmental and corporate strategies employed to reduce White Collar Crime.

2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS TESTS There will be three major tests given during the course that will be scheduled at through the term including the final, which will be of equal point value. Students must be aware of the scheduling of tests because being absent at the class when the announcement is made will not be an acceptable reason to be unprepared. Test will be given during the fifth and tenth weeks and during final exam week. In general, there will be no make-up tests given. If circumstances arise that cause you to miss an exam, it is your responsibility to notify me ASAP. Extreme circumstances of personal hardship will be evaluated on an individual basis. The format for these exams may include the following: Multiple Choice, True/False, Matching, Short Answer, and Essay (all question types may not be utilized in every test). RESEARCH There will be a research and presentation project. Each student will be required to prepare a research project on a WCC topic. All written assignments must be submitted on the due date without fail in a neatly types fashion unless a particular style is specified. On all written assignments quality will be stressed over quantity. No folders need to be submitted. Papers stapled in the upper left corner will meet the requirement. Additional instructions include: 1) Each paper will have a cover page stating the title of the paper, authors of the paper, course number, professor s name and date submitted. 2) Each paper will have a bibliography with a minimum of five sources. Of those five sources, only two can be web sites. 3) Each paper must be at least 7 pages in length but no more than 10 pages in length. 4) Footnotes are required if you quote a source or paraphrase a source. It is suggested that you obtain a book on writing research papers such as: Form and Style by Carole Slade, Handbook for College Research by Robert Perrin, or Keys for Writing by Ann Raimes. Use the guidelines for the American Psychological Association (APA) 5) Each paper must be double-spaced.

3 6) Each student will make a presentation of the paper to the entire class towards the end of the semester. 7) Possible topics: A) Corporate Crime I.E. Enron, World Com B) Environmental Crime I.E. Exxon Valdez, Clean Air and Clean Water Acts C) Political Corruption I.E. Watergate, Iran Contra D) Cyber crime 8) Each student will advise the professor, in written format, on a plain sheet of bond paper, the subject matter selected for the research assignment no later than (NLT) February 11, Each student will submit an outline for the research paper and submit it to the professor NLT March 21, Each student will submit the final paper to the professor NLT April22, All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. ACADEMIC HONESTY The academic honesty and plagiarism policies of the College will be in force during this course. For full details please read the appropriate sections of the handbook. Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism, cribbing or cheating on examinations or quizzes. Plagiarism is the unacknowledged borrowing or duplication of an author s words or ideas whether intentional or not. Common forms include: a) text without quotation marks or proper documentation, b) with documentation but without quotation marks or correct quotation format, c) in paraphrase without proper documentation. Cheating or plagiarism will result in failure for that particular assignment or exam. ATTENDANCE In order to learn it is imperative that you attend class and read the assigned material before class. To obtain the maximum benefits from educational opportunities available at Delaware County Community College, students must establish habits of regular class attendance and participation. Nothing else has yet been established to replace in value the daily, cumulative, educational growth that results from regular class attendance and participation. This is especially true where ideas, concepts, points of view, social development, poise confidence, knowledge and success derive from the interaction of students and faculty. Taking an examination or turning in a report, while extremely important as part of the total educational process, will not in itself, provide for the complete student growth attainment to which your professor is committed. Attendance will be factored into your final grade. A student who has more than six (6) absences will be dismissed from the course and given a grade of F for the course. Of course, we all on occasion have times when we are ill or have a problem preventing us from attending class. You need not provide me with an explanation or

4 reason for your absence because in terms of learning from class an absence is an absence regardless of the circumstances. If absent from class, it is your responsibility to learn what was discussed in class during your absence. This includes instructions and test dates and reviews. Make sure you find out what you missed before the next class. LATENESS/LEAVING EARLY It is important that you arrive in class on time and remain in the class for the duration of the class. I understand that on occasion something may prevent you from being in class on time or cause you to need to leave early. If you need to leave early, please inform me of this at the start of class. In the event that you arrive in class late or need to leave early, please do so quietly and with as little disruption as possible. Many students unfortunately develop a habit of consistently arriving to class late. This will not be tolerated. Be on time for class! ADA Under the ADA, students who have disabilities (learning or other issues) are entitled to special consideration under the ADA. However, it is the student s responsibility to bring it to the attention of the professor or counseling services. CLASS PARTICIPATION Each student should be prepared for class on a regular basis by reading the assigned material, and taking part in class discussion in a meaningful fashion. The give and take of active directed class discussion is extremely important in the Criminal Justice major. The variety of opinions developed through readings, and experiences are valued, as well as, the ability to engage in controversial discussions with dignity and respect. The fully successful student will be an active part of every class. A grade will be assigned for class participation and may include some short written exercises. RESPONSIBILITY It will be the responsibility of the student to get a copy of all notes, handouts, and assignments when the student is absent. Consider a "buddy system" to have a classmate get your work when you are absent with the promise that you will get theirs when necessary. If a student misses an assignment, work sheet, announcement etc. due to absence, it does not remove the student s responsibility to be prepared for the next class with a completed assignment.

5 EXTRA CREDIT Those students who have completed all of the required work for the course and wish to insure that they have the benefit of the push on any close calls relative to grades at the end of the semester can earn extra credit points. A student can earn up to five points extra credit once in each half of the term by: a) reviewing a journal article, b) providing a new source of information other than the text or local news, or c) capturing information on video tape that is of current interest to the class, and sharing that information through a brief presentation of no more than seven minutes. Please, no more than two students per class. Extra credit will not be extended during the last two weeks of the semester. The topic matter selected for the extra credit assignment should have some connection to WCC. CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE The Student Code of Conduct as set forth in the Student Handbook will be binding in any matters of conduct and discipline. WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSE Please refer to the DCCC Catalog for procedures, deadlines, etc The Professor will not allow any student to withdraw from the course after the deadline has passed. Any student enrolled in the course that do not the meet requirements and who neglects to withdraw in the manner provided by the College will receive a failing grade. INCOMPLETE The grade of incomplete will be given only in extraordinary circumstances and at the sole discretion of the instructor. Students Staff and Faculty Instructions For Emergency Evacuation If the fire alarm sounds: 1. Immediately leave classroom or office (do not turn off lights, computers etc.- just close door and leave). Take personal items in your immediate possession with you. 2. Exit building near closest stairs or door and proceed to gated parking lots 1, 2, or day care lot, whichever is closest.

6 YOU MUST be clear and out of courtyard and the immediate building area. 3. If you are injured and are able, proceed to the emergency medical station located in the grass area along the path that leads to the bus stop.
