Web: www.andresmartinez.es Location: Profile: Picture in 1st slide: Barcelona and Madrid, Spain We are a cross-discipline architectural office that specializes in completing pilot-projects in Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape. The builiding of these prototypes is the final stage of a number of research lines started within university and published in specialized media. Our reach is the European Union; the services we offer are tailor-made, and our commitmen, to meet deadlines and budgets; we work associated with a brother-office, and the tools we use are those specific to a flexible networking entourage of the digital era. Cashbah in Algiers: "The city can be crossed without going down to the streets"
. Above: Book's cover. Right: Complete picture of Saitama University. Below: Plan and section accross the courtyard. In detail: - Making roof liveable: emphasis on use, normally forgotten (Public spaces above living places) - Integration between use and services - Green roofs for enhancing urban ecology and building's energetic behaviour A3/7. Book: 'Dwelling on the Roof'. R. Yamamoto: University of Saitama, Yokohama (Japan) 2.
. In detail: a) MMovement in search of reasons for lack of use; b) No form is impossible for being used. Above: Sigfried Giedion: "Das Dach als Wohnfunktion" (from Befreites Wohnen). Right: Le Cobusier: "La Théorie du toit-jardin" (1927) A4/7. 'Dwelling on the Roof' Use and form: Modern Movement
A5/7. 'Dwelling on the Roof'. Form is no problem for use. Outside is as an extension of the domestic world. Left: Vernacular altane in timber. Above: Contemporary altane in steel in La Giudecca Use and form: the venetian Altana
a) "Ouside is an extension of the domestic world though the roof"; b) Nomadic concept in the use of the house A6/7. 'Dwelling on the Roof' Domestic uses in the roof (Traditional house in Baghdad)
A7/7. 'Dwelling on the Roof' Other important issues:. a) Integration of services is crutial for quality of urbanscape. b) Public space can be created on top of roofs at an urban scale. c) Opportunity for re-naturalisation of the city.. Top left: Urbanscape formed by natural breeze conveyors in Hyderabad-Sind (PK) by B. Rudofsky. Left & above: Otto Wagner: project "Collonade", in Karlsbad (Germany) 1906. C1/7. Works: 'Los Docks'
. Location: Madrid. Date: 1995. Authors: José Martínez Sarandeses María Agustina Herrero María Medina Muro. Collaborator: Andrés Martínez. Client: private developper. Budget: 288.850,00!. Surface: 2.368,00 m2. Ratio: 121,98! / m2. Phase: completed In detail:. Courtyard between housing blocks over a 2 storey parking. Privacity problem with offices in ground floor. Garden with mature trees. Activities: - Walking - Sitting - Reading - Water. Constructive solution with ZinCo system (and thanks to Hans Seeger, ZinCo Spain) C2/7. 'Los Docks' Garden over a parking in a private housing courtyard, Madrid 1995
. Analysis with emphasis on shading problems (above). Two entrances to the blocks in ground floor. One entrance to the garden from the street. Entrance to the parking from the street. Sitting zone in the SE, walking along the central axis.. 44 glediscia along the axis. Two water reservoirs with bridges. Low rise schrub-like planting C3/7. 'Los Docks' Analysis, plans and sections
C4/7. 'Los Docks' Main section accross the courtyard, NW-SE
Constructive solution in detail (from below to above):. Mortar base with 0% slope. Waterproof with double asphaltic membrane (4 kg. and 5 kg.). Moisture retention / protection mat (ISM 50). Drainage layer (Floradrain F60) filled with small calibre gravel. Filter sheet (Terram 1.000 of 140 grs.). Vegetation and planting layer In order to:. Retain water but drain the excess. Protect membranes from tree roots (permanent 1 cm. aprox. water layer with 0% slope). Allow developpment of mature trees (90 cm. planting layer) C5/7. Los Docks. Left: Detail of the expansion joint. . Public space as a design tool in an urban rehabilitation project. Old derelict 19th century military zone. A barrier between neighbouhoods: the public space and its selective demolitions have to connect unconnected neighbourhoods. Public space must be continuous and accessible. Areas to walk and areas to stay. Multiplicity of pedestrian connections. Mature trees plantantion to give shade from the beguinning in an extreme summer climate. in blue: area of the public space built over a public parking slab. Left: general plan. C3/6. 'Daoiz y Velarde'. Above: Before (left)...... and after (right). Far left: Selective demolition to create urban itineraries. Left: central square after rehabilitation Public space as an urban rehabilitation design tool
. Location: Madrid. Date: 2005. Authors: José Martínez Sarandeses Andrés Martínez. Client: public (Madrid Council). Budget: 1.578.995,34!. Surface: 11.000,00 m2. Ratio: 143,55! / m2. Phase: completed C4/6. 'Daoiz y Velarde' Planted public space above a 5 storey public parking slab 2.
Constructive solution in detail (from below to above):. Mortar base with slope min 1,5%. Waterproof with double asphaltic membrane (4 kg. and 5 kg.). Moisture retention / protection mat (ISM 50). Drainage layer (Atlantis drainage cell 3cm) with no filling. Filter sheet (Terram 1.000 of 140 grs.). Vegetation and planting layer C5/6. 'Daoiz y Velarde' Differences with 'Los Docks':. Slope instead of flat. Atlantis cell instead of Zinco's Floradrain because of: - critical planting layer depth - minimum space between slabs and exit levels to streets - high compression requirements (fire-engines) Detailing above parking slab

D1/7. 'Blanes' 2.
D2/7. 'Blanes' Preexisting:. The building: public housing in rent for the elder. The roof : non-accessible and full of services. The location: privileged view over the Blanes bay, looking SE. The client: public regional authority housing developper. The brief: Can we change the way we design the roofs in our housing projects? 2 pilot-project with recommendations Communitary space on the roof in a public housing block for the elder
D3/7. 'Blanes'. Location: Blanes, Girona (Catalunya, Spain). Date: 2009. Author: Andrés Martínez. Client: public housing developper. Budget: 256.335,54!. Surface: 863,08 m2. Ratio: 297,00!. Phase: Project out to tender Defining a project methodology by analysis of:. Wiews. prevailing winds. Sun exposure. Previous roof solution: standard inverted roof with gravel finish. Activities: - walking - sitting - exercices - shade - hanging laundry Analysis
Themes: a) Integration of services; b) shade; c) accesibility; c) water to enhance comfort; d) low maintenance green for urban ecology D4/7. 'Blanes' 2. Project model
D5/7. 'Blanes'. Problem with urban regulations (gabarit with 45º from the edge). 1st. version with occupation of upper platform for vegetable gardens. 1st. version with trees instead of water. Zones: - exercises - shade and petanca under pergola - hanging laundry - walking - sitting and views (recovering mediterranean roof activity) 2. Plans and sections
D6/7. 'Blanes' Constructive solution in detail (from below to above):. Hand demolition of existing elements until we reach insulation membrane, over 3% slope mortar. Above this... - New PVC membrane - Insulation extruded poliuretan 5 cm. - Continuous drainage layer - ZinCo with Floradrain F60.. Different cover layers depending on use: - Hard (floor tiles 40x40) - Water 15 cm - Sedum schrubs 15 cm. - Superfitial foundations over FD60. All are porous layers. New steel structure to create shade under a fotovoltaic plant that sells electricity to the general network. (Thanks to Andreu Massoni, ZinCo Spain) Detailing
