How to use this Juris installation/upgrade guide This guide provides a list of tasks for installing and upgrading Juris software. If you need additional information, refer to the Support Center. Before you begin the Juris installation/upgrade Thank you for choosing Juris software. Please read through these instructions completely before beginning the installation. If you have any questions regarding these instructions, contact Juris Support to clarify those issues before attempting the installation. Verify that there are no users on the server and disable virus scanning during the installation. The following procedure refers to executables whose file names depend on your Juris version number. For example, the Juris application executable is named 'Juris Application x.x.exe,' where 'x.x' is the Juris version. Copyright 2014 LexisNexis. All rights reserved. 3 of 22
Review the hardware requirements for Juris Network (for Juris) LexisNexis supports the Juris software on a properly configured Novell or Microsoft network, as follows: Network software needs to be a current version with all service packs applied Access to a qualified network engineer Server recommendations (for Juris) LexisNexis requires that the Juris database server be a separate device from any computer performing as a file and print server, domain controller, or Exchange server. This is particularly relevant with Small Business Server. Additional Juris installation information is available in the installation guides. The Juris database does not need a dedicated database server if your firm has multiple applications using the same database engine. Inadequate memory reduces performance. Workstation Recommendations (for Juris) For optimal performance, the following is recommended/required: An Intel Duo Core processor with 2 GB of RAM is recommended SVGA video at a minimum resolution of 1024x768 is required. A resolution of 1280x1024 is recommended Laser printers for performance and check printing are recommended Internet access is recommended A recordable CD-R/DVD-R is recommended to improve the ability of LexisNexis to provide enhanced support Backup (for Juris) Click here and search for 'backup recommendations' to see current backup recommendations. Review the software requirements for Juris Server Software (for Juris) The following software versions are supported: Windows Server 2003sp2/2008/2008R2/2012R2 Microsoft SQL Server 2005sp4/2008/2014 Microsoft SQL Server Express, 2005sp4/2008 Citrix MetaFrame/Windows Terminal Server (note: setup and configuration of this environment is not supported by Juris support) Upgrade specifics: If upgrading from Juris 2.5 SP2 or earlier, please schedule assistance with Juris Support. Workstation Software (for Juris) Microsoft Excel for Office 2003 or higher to print financial statements A MAPI-compliant mail transport system to use the built-in email features Juris currently supports Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business/Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate, and Windows 8 or 8.1 Professional/Enterprise. Note Juris is not supported on Windows XP Home Edition, Windows Vista Home Edition, Windows 7 Home Edition, or Windows 8 (the equivalent of Home Edition). SQL setup (for Juris) If SQL is not already installed on the dedicated Juris server please install a supported version that meets your database size needs. Juris installation/upgrade preparation Juris Pre-Installation Checklist 1. Review the hardware requirements. Verify that the site meets, or exceeds, the minimum requirements. 2. Review the software requirements. Verify that the site meets, or exceeds, the minimum requirements. 3. Verify that you have downloaded Juris from the following website: http://support.lexisnexis.com/juris 4. Verify that SQL has been installed 5. Verify that all users have exited Juris (if upgrading/migrating servers) 6. Verify that Juris is in Maintenance Mode (if upgrading/migrating servers) 7. Verify that the Juris database has been backed up and that the backup version is available. (if upgrading/migrating servers) 8. Juris installation Run Juris server (Juris installation) Note If this is a new installation of Juris software, after step 8 below, the next screen prompts for a path to use to save the license file. The folder containing the license must be shared and visible to all client PCs. 1. Locate the Juris Server software available with the downloaded installation files. Begin running the application installation. 2. Browse to and select a destination location for Juris. 3. Browse to and execute the Juris Server X.XX.exe file, where X.XX represents the version number of the file. The Welcome window opens. Copyright 2014 LexisNexis. All rights reserved. 8 of 22
4. Click the Next button on the Welcome window. The Path window that displays lets you determine the location where the application files are to be installed. The default is C:\Program Files\Juris2. 5. To change the location for the server files to be installed, click the Browse button. 6. Once the path has been selected, click the Next button to continue. Upon completion of the installation, the License window prompts you to enter your key. 7. Enter the appropriate information. 8. Click the Next button. 9. Click the Exit button. Run the database constructor (Juris installation) 1. Enter the server name/instance, when prompted for a SQL server instance. 2. Click OK. 3. Click the Run button to construct a new database. 4. Click the Exit button when the installation has completed. Run Juris administrative utilities (Juris installation) The Administrative Toolkit may be installed alone, or in addition to the Application Installation. Database Revision Update 1. Double-click the Juris Administrative Utilities 2.XX.exe file (where XX represents the version number of the file.) 2. Click the Next button to continue. The Destination Folder window that appears lets you determine the location where the administrative tools are to be installed. The default is C:\Program Files\Juris2. Copyright 2014 LexisNexis. 3. To change the folder where you want the administrative tools installed, click the Browse button and select the new location. 4. Click Next to continue. 5. Click Finish to complete the installation. Move the client data to the new database (Server Migration) If this is a server migration, restore the client s backed up data to the recently constructed database and continue with the steps below. This can be done via SQL Server Management Studio or the Juris Management Console. Run the database revision update (Juris installation) If you restored the databases from a backup, you must run the Database Revision Update utility before proceeding. 1. On the Windows Start menu, select Programs > Juris > Administrative Tools. 2. Click on Database Revision Update. Copyright 2014 LexisNexis. All rights reserved. 12 of 22
3. Click the Update button. You are prompted to make a backup copy of the database. This step is not required, but is strongly recommended. 4. When the update is complete, click Close. Run Juris application installation (Juris installation) The Juris Application Setup installs the files required to login and use Juris. It must be installed separately on each PC for each user to access Juris. Perform the following to install the Juris client application. Note The file may be saved to a shared folder and all users may perform the application installation by running the installation from the shared drive, if desired. 1. Note The file can be saved to a shared folder, as opposed to downloading to each user's PC. With a shared folder, each user can install the application themselves by running the installation from the shared drive. 2. Run the Juris Application 2.XX.exe file. (2.XX represents the version number of the file.) The installation Wizard window opens. 3. Click the Next button to continue. A path window opens in which you can specify the location where the application files are to be installed. The default is C:\Program Files\Juris2. Copyright 2014 LexisNexis. 3. To change the location for the application files to be installed, click the Browse button. 4. Click the Next button to continue. Juris upgrade Update the license(s) (Juris upgrade) This step is necessary if services are being added or deleted. Run Juris server (Juris upgrade) 1. Locate the Juris Server software available with the downloaded installation files. Begin running the application installation. 2. Browse to and select a destination location for Juris. 3. Browse to and execute the Juris Server X.XX.exe file, where X.XX represents the version number of the file. The Welcome window opens. 4. Click the Next button on the Welcome window.
