Why Dovetail Products? Rotate clamps separately to designed location Large number of configurations available It takes 250-ft. lbs. break away to rotate clamps It takes 500-ft. lbs. break away to rotate clamp with ¼ roll pin Len & Jerry's clamping systems are designed to clamp together with a 45 circular wedge clamp, referred to as a dovetail. This technology is widely used in other industries, usually using a tapered gib that slides in reducing any gap. When forced tight, movement of the two components is stopped. Len & Jerry's clamps are similar, using two 45 dove tailed surfaces which when put together create a 90 surface. Lock together with a clamp ring, and movement of the two components stops. The I.D. of the ring has a matching 90 surface which is.003 larger than the clamp surfaces. This allows the two clamps that are held together to rotate freely inside the ring. When the ring is tightened it takes the shape of the two clamps and the.003 gap disappears. When the clamping bolts are torqued down to 30-ft. lbs. each it takes about 250-ft. lbs. to rotate the clamps. Add ¼ roll pin for more permanent connections and it takes 500-ft. lbs. to rotate clamp. Page: 3 Modular Dovetail Building Components Articulating Arm Components Aluminum Enclosed Track Tool Holders and Accessories Why use Len & Jerry's Components? Machined from Extruded Material versus Cast to Shape Len & Jerry's clamps are machined from 6061-T6 extruded aluminum. Working the metal by extruding will dramatically increase it s strength. Such alloys like 6061-T6 are further strengthened by heat treatment. The advantage of extruded aluminum over cast aluminum is the elongation of the grain structure, which increases the hardness, tensile strength, and the amount it will elongate before breaking. Cast products have no grain direction and exhibit a random grain pattern that varies in size with usually some porosity. They have very low elongation, about 3%, which makes them brittle with little or no warning of failure. Products made from 6061-T6 extruded aluminum can be designed around a minimum elongation of 10.0%. 6061-T6 extruded aluminum usually exhibits typical properties of 17% elongation compared to 3.5% elongation for cast materials. The typical tensile strength for extruded aluminum is about 25% greater than of a cast product. In Len & jerry's clamp designs, we take advantage of the high elongation achieved from extruded aluminum. We use hole sizes typically 1/64 larger than the tube to be clamped, which allows us to clamp on standard mill tolerance and out of round tubing\bar stock-steel or aluminum. The wall thickness on the clamp that wraps around the tube is thinned down so that it will take the shape of the tube OD. When the clamp fits the shape of the tube OD, the additional surface contact adds rigidity for stiffness and non-rotation. Cast clamps have a precision sized hole about.002 larger than the OD of the tube. The clamps are not very elastic, but will close on a tube that is a few thousandths smaller. Each one of Len & Jerry's clamps has a starter hole to add roll pins for positive locking if required. Standard mill tubing is readily available at most suppliers that sell metal bar stock, and is about 1/3 the cost of precision sized tube, which is much more difficult to find. This allows you to buy tubing locally in your area, to save you money! USES FOR CLAMPS AND COMPONENTS: End effector systems for press rooms and body shops Fixtures Machines This system will adapt to a variety of quick change tooling adapter systems. Modular Dovetail Building Components Articulating Arm Components Aluminum Enclosed Track Rail Components Tool Holders and Accessories Page: 4 Why aluminum components from Len & Jerry's? Aluminum versus Steel A unique combination of properties makes aluminum one of our most versatile engineering and construction materials. It is light in mass, yet some of its alloys have strengths greater than that of structural steel. It has high resistance to corrosion under the majority of service conditions, and no colored salts are formed to stain adjacent surfaces or discolor products of which it comes into contact, such as fabrics in the textile industry and solutions in chemical equipment. It has no toxic reaction, and it works great in combination with stainless steel tubes, bars, and threaded fasteners in the food industry. For the majority of applications, aluminum needs no protective coating, and where additional protection is required, any of a wide variety of surface finishes may be applied. Lightness is one of aluminum s most useful characteristics. The specific gravity is about 2.7. The mass (weight) of aluminum is roughly 35% that of steel. This is an ideal material for Len & Jerry's clamps. We decided to machine our components from extruded shapes that have been heat-treated. The advantage of extruded aluminum over cast aluminum is the elongation of the grain structure, which increases the hardness, tensile strength, and the amount it will elongate before breaking. The ease and speed with which aluminum can be machined is one of the important factors contributing to the low cost of our products. If you get into an automotive plant you will see large massive steel structures that move material for a variety of applications including assembly, lifting, rotation, transfer and the list goes on. Some of these devices are articulating arms, balancers, end effector and so on. A lot of these are tied back and not in use. Why? They are usually over built, heavy and made out of steel. Heavy structures take more force to get them moving and an equal force to stop them. Len & Jerry's makes a large variety of modular building components including clamp components, articulating arm components, and enclosed track rail components. These modular components can be assembled as lightweight structures. There is no welding, all components bolt together and can be reconfigured by loosening a bolt. When you reach the final configuration on some of the components you can add a ¼ roll pin for a more permanent connection. The dovetails and accessories, and the T slotted aluminum sections are now being used to create fixtures, machines, racks, tables, conveyors, carts, assembly work stations, hand apply tooling, and any other project you can imagine. Advantages of thin wall steel tubing. Greater fatigue resistance than aluminum Less deflection than aluminum 1/3 the cost of aluminum The following charts in the next few pages are designed around standard industrial steel tubing with a yield strength of 35,000 psi. If you purchase steel from your local supplier, you will need to determine what the yield strength of the materials are for your application. Len & Jerry's is offering steel tubing with diameters of 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 in.065 wall and 2-1/2 in.083 wall galvanized mechanical tube with 50,000 psi. yield strength. The load to yield with a 5:1 safety factor on the charts provided can be increased by about 40% if you use this tubing. Steel has approximately three times greater fatigue resistance than 6061-T6 aluminum.

Page: 12 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE Regarding single point connections using L&J Dovetail components This product was designed and built to be a universal building block system that could be used in a wide variety of part holding and load carrying applications. Since it is so easy to use, it is just as easy to misuse the product by exceeding its intended application. If misused, the resulting failure could result in serious injury or death. It is the designer/builder(s) responsibility to not over load the capability and fatigue life of the product. In many cases bending moment and multiple cycles need to be considered when designing your particular system. In the following pages you will be given mechanical properties for the material; however, there are many variables that need to be considered. A few examples of this may be: How fast does the operator start and stop the movement? When the part is engaged, does the operator force the part in or out of the dunnage or fixture? These are some of the questions that make it impossible for len & Jerry's to predict fatigue life of the product. Below are a few examples of applications which should be avoided if possible. If the design does not allow an alternative, then other safety measures must be taken, for example changing to a steel connection and adding a safety cable. See Fig. 1 Drill or loop safety cable to a secure point Bar or shaft Female clamp assembly Point A Load Point 1 Drill safety Load Point 2 cable hole Fig. 1. Section view 1. The most severe application is when load 1 shifts to load 2. The rocking back and forth seems to be the most vulnerable to a fatigue failure. A crack can start at point A and will move inward and will eventually cause a catastrophic failure. A hanging application, in which the unit separates, could cause injury, death, or damage. If a single point connection cannot be avoided, the application needs to have safety cables installed.

Page: 13 2. Handles that extend outward from a device that is used to position the unit. If the positioning of the product or load causes the operator to put excessive force on the handle attachment, the same rocking action as described in figure 1 can occur. If the control handles are long, it does not take a lot of pressure to exceed 200 foot-pounds at the attachment. These forces are push, pull, twist, bend, or other loading that may cause fatigue at point A. This only becomes a problem when the handle is being used to force the parts in and out of a fixed location. Under normal usage where the handle is only positioning the load, without interference, the single point connection is ok. 3. An attachment to a cylinder that pushes and pulls. This rocking action could cause fatigue at point A. The result of having the cylinder still under load after the required movement has been achieved can cause this failure. In other words, the cylinder should only have stroke enough to finish the required move. This can be achieved by adjusting the position of the cylinder to be fully extended at one end of the movement, and using a shaft collar to limit the retract at the other end of the movement. This will allow only the force required to move the load being exerted on the joint and not the static force of the cylinder. This two-point connection is a better solution. Drill or loop safety cable to a secure point Female clamp assembly Load Point 1 Drill safety Bar or shaft Load Point 2 cable hole If it is feasible, the above configuration should be used for a connection. In many cases it is not possible to design around a single point. A typical case would be coming off the bottom of a torque tube.

Len and Jerry's also offers two different sizes of dovetail connections. Depending on the load and number of cycles, you may elect to use a #2 size dovetail for your certain application. The cost impact is less to move to a larger dovetail than it is to move right into the steel configuration. #1 Dovetail in aluminum Light Loading Where the clamp is not subject to fatigue #1 Dovetail in steel Medium Loading Where the clamp will see light fatigue loading #2 Dovetail in aluminum Medium Loading Where the clamp will see light fatigue loading #2 Dovetail in steel - Heavy loading Where the clamp will see high fatigue loading Ø1.140 #1 Series surface area: 1.020 sq./in. (1.140 dia.) Ø1.664 #1 SERIES #2 Series surface area: 2.174 sq./in. (1.664 dia.) The #2 series dovetail have twice the surface area of the #1 series dovetail Material data: 6061-T6 Aluminum Yield Strength: 40,000 psi. #2 SERIES Page: 14 Again, we cannot give a value on metal fatigue from cycling. This is the designer/builder(s) responsibility, which is determined by your individual application. All connections that could fail and cause injury or death must have safety cables installed. Fatigue life of 6061-T6 extruded aluminum, due to its elongated grain structure and elongation of about 17% is far superior to cast products. Cast products have a random grain pattern and elongation of about 3-½% typical, which makes them brittle with little or no warning of failure. After final location is achieved a 1/8 to 1/4 hole may be drilled if needed to insure that final position does not change. A roll pin or bolt with nut can be used. Note: this hole must be used when a shaft can pull out. All vertical shafts/ tubes must be pinned Drill 3/16 dia. hole for safety cable, as needed Len and Jerry's offers a few key components in steel versus aluminum to solve some of these fatigue issues. These components do cost a little more, but they have approximately three times greater fatigue resistance than 6061-T6 aluminum. These should be used at single point load carrying connections, where fatigue may cause a failure. (In the catalog, aluminum clamps are shown in gray color, and steel clamps are shown in black color). In any single point connection that bending moment may be encountered, safety cables should be added. See Fig. 1

Len & Jerry's Modular Components Page: 15 Using all Steel Fasteners At the end of 2003, Len & Jerry's redesigned 60% of its clamping products to use all steel fasteners. Len & Jerry's will continue to improve remaining clamping products to use all steel fasteners. Please note that steel clamps are shown in black and aluminum clamps are shown gray in gray. The benefit of using steel as opposed to aluminum is that steel will allow for higher torque ratings on the fasteners, thus helping to prevent the stripping of threads. Note: any exposed cap of a socket head cap screw can be wire tied, if the screw is replaced with a drilled socket head cap screw. Contact factory for price and delivery for pre-assembled wire tie socket head cap screw components.
