If you are interested in a career in Electrical Engineering then Borders College have developed an exciting new opportunity to study an Engineering programme designed to enable successful students with the chance to progress directly into one of ten guaranteed advanced entry places in Year two of the Electrical Engineering BEng/BEng (Hons) programme at Edinburgh Napier University, a course accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
What will I be studying? A Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical Engineering at SCQF Level 7. This course is designed for people interested in an Electrical Engineering career and the course contains a range of SQA Higher National Units that will develop understanding in: Electricity Power Systems Electrical Machine Principles Power Electronics Electrical Safety DC and AC Principles Application of Electrical and Electronic Instruments Application of Programmable Logic Controllers and Three Phase systems Core Skills are covered by Mathematics: Technician 1 Mathematics for Engineering 2 Communications and Applying Information Technology Thereafter, the opportunity to progress to a BEng/BEng(Hons) Electrical Engineering. What are the entry requirements? National Certificate in Electrical Engineering or two Higher qualifications at grade C or above, of which one must be in Mathematics, Physics or Technical Studies and a satisfactory interview and two positive references
How do I progress to the degree programme? Students that gain the HNC with a B pass in the Graded Unit and a pass in the Maths for Engineering 2 unit will be able to access one of the ten guaranteed advanced entry places in year two of the Electrical Engineering BEng/BEng (Hons) course at Edinburgh Napier University. What about employment opportunities? This course will give students a sound foundation in engineering and could lead to employment in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation sectors. How many days will I attend College? The HNC is a one year full-time course which requires attendance at College for two days a week and directed study around this. It is designed to build confidence and prepare students well for moving forward onto either the degree programme at Edinburgh Napier University or directly into employment in the sector. What arrangements are available for financing my study? Access to financial support of between 4500 and 7250 per year, depending upon personal circumstances and meeting required criteria, may be available in the form of a student loan, bursary or a combination of both.
