The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) set up by an Act of Parliament, was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognized as one of the centres of academic excellence in the country. Over the years, the dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure, has kept the institute on par with the best institutions in the world. About 20 percent of its graduates and post-graduates are entrepreneurs many of them first generation. To promote interdisciplinary learning and to keep up with the changing environment, IIT Bombay established its management school in 1995 with the objective of transforming professionals with technological background to "Renaissance Leaders" of tomorrow. In the year 2000, the school was renamed as Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, in honor of Dr. Shailesh J. Mehta, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Bombay and a generous contributor to the school. Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJM SOM) already leads the way in preparing its Graduates to respond to the new challenges by drawing on the varied intellectual resources of IIT Bombay and providing an outstanding and innovative program in management education. Continuing Education Programme at IIT Bombay The Continuing Education Programme (CEP) at IIT Bombay has been set up to meet the manpower training and knowledge upgradation needs of the industry. With the rapid pace of growth in technological knowledge and frequent paradigm shifts in technology, Continuing Education of working professionals in industry is a vital need. Continuing Education Programmes are being conducted all over the country and abroad. In addition to regular short term programmes, CEP also conducts intensive courses on selected topics leading to a certificate on successful completion and evaluation. In the year 2003-2004, a certificate programme in Marketing Management was conducted at New Delhi by Professor Sanjaya S. Gaur and colleagues from SJM SOM, IIT Bombay. Programme was well received by the executives and managers working in different kinds of organisations, viz. government, private and family managed businesses. CEP, IIT Bombay announces One-year Certificate Programme in Management with Dual Specialisation in Marketing and Human Resource Management to be held at New Delhi and Lucknow. The programme will be coordinated by Professors S. Bhargava and Sanjaya S. Gaur of Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay.
One Year CEP Certificate Programme in MANAGEMENT with Dual Specialization in MARKETING & HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Marketing function and management of people in any kind of business is increasingly becoming important today to build and maintain the sustainable competitive advantage. Contemporary businesses scenario demands to have pace with the fast changing business scenario, which in turn requires more competent professionals with a broader base of skills and expertise in the field of Marketing and Human Resource Management (HRM). Successful business leaders in the corporate world have realized it and are applying all possible strategies to hone up the business development skills of people, who can bring the creative and innovative edge to the business. This program has been exclusively designed to meet this emerging need and includes topics that bridge the existing gap and facilitate easy transition to the required platform for success. Proposed One-year Certificate Programme in Management with specialization in Marketing and HRM is an endeavor to provide an opportunity to the young working professionals to get an in-depth orientation as well as exposure of management through the faculty of repute. A unique feature of this programme is that participants will be required to undertake an eight-week project work in their work place. It will help them developing competence in applying marketing and people management concepts as well as techniques to live problems. Project will require them to identify the real business problems, examine the issues scientifically, analyze and present the findings to other executives (peer participants) and finally submit a report in dissertation format under the supervision of the programme coordinators. Issues Addressed through the Programme This programme seeks to address a set of issues as stated below: Address the emerging paradigms in the field of Management. An emphasis on current concepts and applications. A focus on those skills most needed by Marketing and HR people today: analytical reasoning, effective communication, and teamwork. An integration of information management system applications within the curriculum. A blend of conventional Marketing and HR topics with a focus on the requirements of modern businesses. An 8-week multidimensional project work, where participants apply marketing and HR concepts in workplace.
Programme Duration This year-long Certificate programme of CEP, IIT Bombay will be held simultaneously at New Delhi and Lucknow. Classes are proposed to be held on every alternate weekend (Saturdays and Sundays). Total number of program days will be 52 days over 26 weekends in a year. Classes on Saturdays will be held from 2.00 PM to 8.30 PM and on Sundays from 9.00 AM to 3.30 PM. Target Audience Through this programme, an attempt is being made to impart high quality education to the professionals, who are interested in building their career and business by acquiring a superior competency in the area of Management. Executives, who have some experience and assumed or aspire to assume higher responsibilities at the managerial level, will benefit from the proposed programme. It will be useful to graduates working in government and private organizations, entrepreneurs, and managers of family managed businesses. Pedagogy and Programme Faculty The programme pedagogy will involve use of case studies, lecture-cumdiscussions, video / film discussions etc. Dr. S. Bhargava, Professor and Dr. Sanjaya S. Gaur, Associate Professor, Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay will be the programme coordinators and key teaching faculty members for this programme. The programme will include other faculty members from IIT Bombay. Leading experts from industry and academia may also be invited in the programme. Programme Fee Total fees for the programme will be Rupees Eighty Five thousand (Rs. 85,000/-) only. Each participant is required to pay the total fee by a crossed demand draft drawn in favour of THE REGISTRAR, IIT BOMBAY (CEP ACCOUNT) and payable at Mumbai. The payment is to be made on or before December 10, 2005. Award of Certificate All the participants will have to appear for the comprehensive examination at the end of the programme for successful completion of the programme. On successful completion of the programme, the each participant will be awarded a certificate by CEP, IIT Bombay.

Profile of the Programme Coordinators and Key Programme Faculty Dr. S. Bhargava Dr. S Bhargava is Professor of Organizational Behavior & Human Resource Management at the SJMSOM, IIT, Bombay. His past teaching and research association has also been with IIM, Lucknow and IIM, Ahmedabad. He is just nominated for the VKRV Rao Award in Management and is recipient of the ISCA Young Scientist (1986) as well as MPCOST Young Scientist (1988) awards. He teaches Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management, and Business Entrepreneurship Development and is engaged in research as well as consulting in the areas of Giftedness & Talent Management, Building and Developing Entrepreneurship, Creating Emotionally Intelligent Leaders, Challenges of Knowledge Managers, Reward Management, Management of Human Service Organizations: NGOs, Issues of Outsourcing & Call Centers, Management of Family and Career, and Competency Assessment. In these areas, he has published extensively, done many research/consulting projects for the government and private organizations, and conducted series of training programmes for all levels of managers/officers. He is also in the review committee of the Academy of Management (USA) and many Indian publications. Dr. Sanjaya S. Gaur Dr. Sanjaya S. Gaur is currently Associate Professor of Marketing at Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He has been the Visiting Professor at Marketing Centrum Muenster, Westphalian Wilhelms University (WWU) of Muenster. He is also Adjunct Professor at University of Hoseo and SIT University in South Korea. He has been the Assistant Professor & area coordinator of Marketing at S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai and core Marketing Faculty at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani. Dr. Gaur is designated as a Fellow of Academy of Marketing Science (USA), Member, Academy of International Business, a Doctorate in Management and has done his graduation in engineering and post graduation in Management with specialization in Marketing Management from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to Marketing and contributes regularly to international and national conferences, workshops and Journals. He has published a book and several research papers. He has been on the board of Governors for Management Institutes in India and is on the Panel of reviewers for national and International Journals.
