CREATOR OF RECORDS: In 1940, the N. Bugge Company was dissolved and operations were continued as a limited liability company with the subsequent change of name to AS N. Bugge. From the same date IS Bugge & Krogh-Hansen was established. The company took over all whaling operations managed by the N. Bugge Company through its four owners Finn Bugge, N.R. Bugge, Consul H. Krogh-Hansen and Harald Krogh-Hansen under the name Bugge & Krogh-Hansen. Despite the company s formal establishment, the name Bugge & Krogh-Hansen had already been used as a business name since 1936. A contract of interests was renegotiated in 1944, and again in 1946 after the death of Consul H. Krogh-Hansen. Besides serving as an agent for Hector Whaling Ltd. and United Whalers Ltd., Bugge & Krogh-Hansen also acted as agent for The African Whaling Co. and Saldanha Whaling Ltd. (A 1519). In August 1960, Hector Whaling Ltd. sold the floating factories Balaena and Enderby along with seven whaling vessels to Japan. Since it was responsible for the hiring and equipping of the floating factories, the company suffered consequences. The company was dissolved two years later in 1962. THE ARCHIVE: The Bugge & Krogh-Hansen archive comprises 4.6 linear shelf metres and spans the years from 1938 until 1962. Over the years the company entered into both management and agency agreements with a number of British and Norwegian companies. This means that the company was essentially responsible for these companies whaling operations. For the same reason, documentation will be found here relating to the operation of both floating material and equipment. Moreover, separate files are arranged according to the name of the companies general managers. E Case Records, 1940 1971 This series is arranged by case and includes key documentation relating to agreements and contracts involving several business contacts. Documents show the company s reestablishment of whaling activities at the land-based station on Deception Island at the beginning of the 1950s. Further, there are a number of calculations and accounting summaries pertaining to whether to continue operations. At the end of the series there are letters and telegrams in direct continuation of the Dbc Dbcb series in A 1326, the N. Bugge archive. F Vessel Documentation, 1947 1960 This series is divided into five sub-series, arranged according to the vessel s name. The documentation is varied and contains information about both crews and equipment. The series contains medical information and is partially subject to restricted access for 60 years. H Average/Shipwreck and Policy Files, 1958 1960 This series is divided into two sub-series and contains both documentation relating to ships, whaling equipment and crew. Moreover, it features correspondence and settlements with insurance companies. The series is arranged by vessels name. I Ship s Logs and Engine Room Logbooks, 1946 1960 The series is arranged in two sub-series arranged by ship name and consists primarily of engine room logbooks. 3
J Laboratory Logs and Reports, 1946 1956 The series is organized according to name of ship. The documentation contains production analyses, including analyses of meat extracts, whale meat and oil. The series consists both of everyday entries as well as more general production summaries. P Personnel Management, 1948 1957 The series is arranged into two sub-series and contains crew account settlements. See also A 1326 N. Bugge, Pab series Crew Cards 1946 1979, for documentation on crew hired by Bugge & Krogh-Hansen. At the end of the series there is a journal kept by Harald Krogh-Hansen for the 1946 whaling season. Q Contracts, Agreements and Mortgages, 1951 1960 This series contains a wide range of documentation relating to contracts and agreements. R Accounts 1938 1963 As general manager, Bugge & Krogh-Hansen was responsible for whaling operations for several companies, including United Whalers Ltd. For this reason, vouchers and accounting records concerning maintenance of whaling vessels, floating factories and crew payrolls were administered by them, while other vouchers were sent to United Whalers Ltd. in London to be handled. T Maps and Drawings, 1947 1953 Floor plans showing the station area and buildings. In addition, there is a set of building drawings, of the blubber boiling plant and appurtenant technical drawings. See also the report in Ea/0006. Y Other Separate Archives Specifications for both ships and machinery, among other things for the new-build 1362. This series has not been organized in fine detail.
