Student the Course is Expected to Serve: This course is intended for students who plan to major in business, mathematics, engineering, and science. Textbook: College Algebra with Modeling & Visualization, 5th Edition, by Cary Rockswold; Pearson/Addison Wesley, 2014. Course Description: Math 140 emphasizes the notion of a function as a unifying concept. The following families of functions and their characteristics are examined within this course: polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions. Additional topics will include solving inequalities and systems of non-linear equations. Technology and writing assignments will be used throughout the course as appropriate. Applications involving problem-solving skills will be emphasized throughout the course. Other Materials: Students are required to have a non-symbolic graphing calculator TI-83 Plus/TI- 84 Plus. Symbolic graphing calculators such as TI-89 are not permitted in this course. MML & Internet Resources: The textbook used for this course is bundled with MyMathLab (MML) software. MyMathLab is a text-specific, easily customizable online courses for textbooks in Mathematics and Statistics. MyMathLab provides a rich and flexible set of course materials, featuring free-response exercises correlated directly to the textbook that instructors can assign for online homework, quizzes, and tests. These exercises regenerate algorithmically for unlimited practice and mastery, and in homework and practice modes, each exercise is accompanied by an interactive guided solution and sample 1

problem. MyMathLab provides students additional with multimedia resources, such as video lectures, animations, and an ebook, to independently improve their understanding and performance. Course Objectives: 1. Analyze the graphs of various families of functions. 2. Apply the models and characteristics of various families of functions to scenarios in order to solve real-world (contextual) problems. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Identify the characteristics of a quadratic function (i.e., vertex, axis of symmetry, and direction of concavity). 2. Compute roots/zeroes of a polynomial function by factoring 3. Estimate the roots/zeroes of a polynomial function. 4. Solve polynomial inequalities. 5. Solve systems of linear equations using matrices and determinants. 6. Solve systems of linear inequalities. 7. Solve systems of non-linear equations. 8. Simplify rational expressions using the division algorithm. 9. Identify points of discontinuity of a rational function. 10. Identify vertical/horizontal asymptotes and end behavior of rational functions. 2

11. Solve rational inequalities. 12. Solve radical equations and equations with fractional exponents. 13. Identify the domain, range of power functions; determine if the function has an inverse. Solve exponential and logarithmic equations. 17. Formulate and apply exponential and logarithmic functions to a contextual situation. Embedded Student Learning Outcomes: Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to: Identify the domain and range of a function. Determine intervals on which functions are decreasing/increasing, continuous/non-continuous, or piecewise. Identify functions from multiple sources of information (i.e., verbal descriptions, graphs, equations, and tables of values). Relate the effect of transformations (i.e., translations, rescaling, or reflections) on graphs of functions and their corresponding equations. Perform operations (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) on functions, including the composition of functions. Decompose a function into a composition of two or more functions. Formulate and apply a function to a contextual situation. Determine the conditions under which a function has an inverse. Identify the inverse of a function from multiple representations. Reformulate a given function into various representations (i.e., verbal, graphical, algebraic, or tabular). Class Operation: 1. Homework: Reading the relevant sections in your textbook is always expected. Homework exercises will be assigned regularly. The quizzes will be based on the assigned homework problems and additional work sheets or problem sets. Students who keep up the daily work are generally those who do well on quizzes and tests. Always check the answers in the back of the book and prepare to ask questions in class. You are encouraged to work together with other students on homework problems. 2. Website & Blackboard: It is your responsibility to check my Website & the Blackboard regularly for announcements and other important information regarding the course. 3. Online Assignments: Most of the homework assignments and quizzes are online assignments which are created using MyMathLab software. These assignments are automatically graded. Online homework exercises include guided solutions and sample problems to help students understand and master concepts. Policies: Participation policy: Class participation is mandatory. You are expected to attend most of the class sessions. If you have any question, be ready to ask it at the beginning of the class. The average student should plan two hours of out of class time for each hour of class. Some students need more time than this. Make-up Policy: No make-up exam is given without prior notification and documented acceptable excuse. The student must contact the instructor by telephone or e-mail on the day of the exam if there is a problem. If you know in advance of an unavoidable absence, arrangements can be made to take a test prior to the absence. Attendance Policy: Students must attend most of the class sessions. They are expected to be there ON TIME. Attendance will be taken daily. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain the assignment and find out what material was covered. Mathematics Department Active Pursuit of Course Objectives & ADW Policy: Students are not actively pursuing the course objectives and will be administratively withdrawn (ADW) at midterm if at least two of the following apply: 1. Less than 70% of assignments up to the midterm have been completed. 2. Less than 70% of quizzes and tests up to the midterm have been attempted. 3. Less than 50% of class sessions up to the midterm have been attended. Cell Phones/Beepers policy: Electronic devices cause disruption during class and are not permitted. Active Learning is, in short, anything that students do in a classroom other than merely passively listening to an instructor s lecture. Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.
