Cost and benefits of digital preservation in a federated data infrastructure: Who pays what and who gets what in The Netherlands?

A Conceptual Approach to Data Stewardship and Software Sustainability

Transcription:

ICT Consultancy for cultural heritage Cultural information digitally available Assistance by a specialist That clarifies matters! Cultural information is made available by - among others: - archives, - museums, - libraries and - archeologists. The public expects this type of information to be available on the WWW. And dispite the differences between the various disciplines preferably in one location. That way unsuspected connections can be found, without coincidence or cumbersome manual work. To develop information systems facilitating the accessibility and processibility of cultural information there is need for someone with affinity with, education for and experience in this special field. I can provide in this need. The purpose of my contribution to a project is a thorough understanding of the chosen solution by all stakeholders. Of course by providing a clear report of the analysis and specifications, but also by verbal explanation. That clarifies matters! Please feel free to contact me - without any obligations.

Curriculum Vitae Youth University Freelance consultant And... I was born in Eindhoven in the southern part of The Netherlands (1974) and lived in this region throughout my youth. In 1993 I finished pre-university education. After high-school I studied Computing Science at Eindhoven University of Technology. During this program I did optional courses in history, archival and library sciences at various universities. In 1998 I did a traineeship at the Netherlands Historical Data Archive (NHDA). In 2000 I did my Master Thesis on Knowledge Management at Corus in IJmuiden. Since 2000 I am working as a freelance consultant for digital access to cultural information. In that job I contributed to projects of various clients. Some of these projects leaded to publications. I am married to Irene and I am the father of Rinske (2003). In my spare-time I like to investigate my family history and I am singing as a tenor in a choir.

An expert contribution to your project Analysis of the situation and your needs Design and specification Support to your project In a project for digital access to cultural information I can advise you in what the information system should be able to facilitate. Therefore I perform an information analysis. In this analysis questions are answered like: - Which information is currently stored? - Is this information correct and sufficient? - How is information made available? - How can standards be applied? The analysis leads to an advise about how to handle and manage your information. After the analysis I can provide a design for an information structure for the desired information system. A functional specification ("What should the system be able to do?") can be part of that. In consideration with the software-developer can be determined what technology should be used to realise the system. During the implementation of an information system I can - independently - support the projectmanager in making (technological) choices. Besides that, I can support the communication with the software-developer.

Representation of historical knowledge New technology and new insights The development of new knowledge by humans The knowledge in resources To support the practical work with theory, I am investigating representation of historical knowledge. Knowledge representation includes among others datamodeling and the inference of new knowledge. The research has two parts. Knowledge representation serves a problem and therefore supports the process in which the problem is solved. Historical knowledge is used and created by humans. Knowledgerepresentation should therefore be investigation from that point of view: how is the search for new knowledge organised and which are the properties of historical knowledge and historical reasoning. Accept for the 'dynamic' aspect of the processes, resources are a more 'static' aspect of cultural knowledge. Every resource has its own specific properties and these are captured in models. Existing standards like Dublin Core, TEI and EAD are very important. New standards like RDF en OWL provide new opportunities in making cultural information more accessible and are therefore studied intensively.
