WHAT IS A 1+1 NURSING PROGRAM? Hondros College offers a 1 + 1 nursing education program to provide flexibility and options as you work toward your career goals. Level I of the program is the Practical Nursing (PN) program, which will take approximately 1 year to complete. Once you successfully complete the PN program and pass the NCLEX-PN exam, you may choose to step out of the program and begin your career as an LPN, or you may choose to continue to the Associate Degree (AD) program (Level II). Level II of the nursing program offers an Associate Degree with a major in nursing. The AD program takes 6 quarters to complete and results in the ability to apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain the RN license. Complete your LPN Education in 4 quarters Complete your RN Education in 10 quarters If you re already an LPN, complete your RN education in 6 quarters Level I: Practical Nursing Program The PN curriculum will take students less than one year to complete and is offered at the Westerville, West Chester, Fairborn and Independence campuses. Students will take classroom, online and clinical courses for a total of 4 quarters. Students can enroll in the program 4 times per year (January, April, July, and October). Students will begin clinical experience in their first term, providing immediate opportunities to apply nursing theory to practice. The PN program requires approximately 12 hours of clinical practice per week depending on the course. Clinical shifts are usually 6-12 hours in length, and may be scheduled during the day, evening, or on the weekends. We have clinical agreements with long term care facilities, MRDD facilities, day care, and hospitals to provide a thorough, hands-on learning experience for our students. Level II: Associate Degree in Nursing Program The AD program will take students 6 quarters to complete and is currently offered at the Westerville, West Chester and Fairborn campuses. Plans are underway to launch the AD program soon at the Independence campus. Students must be an LPN in order to enroll, or have completed Level I with Hondros College (GPA of at least 2.5 in preceding LPN program). Students will take classroom, online and clinical courses for a total of 6 quarters. The AD program requires approximately 12 hours of clinical practice per week depending on the course. LEVEL I - PN PROGRAM Licensed practical nurses promote the health and well being of individuals under the direction of licensed physicians, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, and podiatrists. As an LPN, you will provide direct nursing care in a variety of health care settings. You may perform routine laboratory tests, administer medications, monitor intravenous therapy and contribute to the patient s plan of care. LPNs are generalists and work in all areas of health care; but many work in specialized settings such as long term care agencies, sub-acute care facilities, doctor s offices, and home health care agencies. LPNs can advance to become charge nurses in select settings. Many choose to become registered nurses by continuing their education. Hondros College offers a Level II nursing education program for LPNs choosing to become an RN, which can be completed in 6 additional quarters. In areas where there is a shortage of RNs, LPNs may have increased opportunities to work in acute care facilities. Employment of LPNs is expected to grow by 21 percent between 2008 and 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. This projection is based upon the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population and the general increase in demand for healthcare services. (1) Median annual wages of licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses were $39,030 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $33,360 and $46,710. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,260, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $53,580. (1) Hondros Nurses: Setting the Standard for Clinical Care 1.888.HONDROS nursing.hondros.edu

LEVEL II - AD PROGRAM Registered nurses (RNs) treat and care for patients, educate patients on various medical conditions, and provide support for a patient s family. An RN is responsible for recording a patient s medical history and current symptoms, assessing the patient, performing diagnostic tests, administering treatments, and maintaining IV lines. The RNs is responsible for establishing the plan of care, assigning tasks to LPN s and delegating to unlicensed assistive personnel. Nurses can choose to specialize in a specific area of practice such as perioperative nurses who work in operating rooms, medical-surgical nurses who provide health promotion and basic medical care to patients with various medical and surgical diagnoses, or pediatric nurses who provide care and preventative services to children and adolescents. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is a result of technological advances in patient care and by an increasing emphasis on preventive care. In addition, the number of older people, who are much more likely than younger people to need nursing care, is projected to grow rapidly. (2) Median annual wages of registered nurses were $62,450 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $51,640 and $76,570. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,410, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $92,240. (2) As the largest healthcare occupation, registered nurses held about 3.1 million jobs in 2008. (3) About 62% of RNs work in hospitals. (3) Median Annual income in 2008: $62,450. (2) (1) Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-2011 Edition.
