Prior to joining FCA Mr. Gomez retired in July 2005 from public service after completing 31 years in both city and state governments. He started his career in 1974 with the Dinuba City Fire Department and continued with the Visalia Fire Department, both in California. He served in various positions such as Firefighter, Shift Commander, Fire Inspector and Fire/Arson Investigator. In 1982, during his tenure with the Visalia Fire Department he created the foundation for and implemented the first Fire/Arson Investigation Unit. He also served as the first full time Investigator for the unit. In 1984, Mr. Gomez joined the California State Fire Marshal s Office Arson/Bomb Unit where he served for eight years. During his tenure with the Arson/Bomb Unit he held the positions of Arson/Bomb Investigator, Arson K-9 Handler and Supervising Arson/Bomb Investigator. During his tenure with the State Arson/Bomb Unit he had many interesting career cases, including testifying against Glendale Fire Captain/Investigator John Orr, who was subsequently found guilty of many arson fires and the deaths of innocent people, lead investigator of the Admiral Nimitz priceless library arson fire at University of Berkeley, California and the state s first lead investigator for the bombing at the UC Berkeley lab in 1985, which was later revealed to be part of the Uni-Bomber string of bombings. In 1987, Mr. Gomez was appointed to serve as the first Film Industry Unit Coordinator for over two years. He was instrumental in providing direction to California Fire Departments statewide as they dealt with the Motion Picture /Television Industry on fire/life safety requirements, including information and guidance to the Pyrotechnic Special Effects industry. Mr. Gomez was also instrumental with the nation s first publication of a Film Industry Fire/Life Safety Handbook by the California State Fire Marshal s Office. Mr. Gomez is also a court qualified expert in Fire/Arson, Explosives and Illegal Fireworks investigations. In 1992, Mr. Gomez continued with his state career by joining the California Department of Insurance, Fraud Division. He served in various positions such as Criminal Investigator, Supervising Criminal Investigator, Chief Investigator of four regional operations/offices and Bureau Chief for the Central Region and Auto Fraud Program Coordinator. Mr. Gomez is a court qualified expert in fraud investigations, specializing in staged auto collisions crimes and organized criminal rings. Mr. Gomez has been an instructor and speaker related to topics involving fire/arson investigations, pyrotechnic special effects, fireworks, insurance fraud investigations and SIU regulatory matters. Mr. Gomez is an active member of the California Peace Officer Association, International Association of Chief of Police, National Fire Protection Association, Southern California Fraud Investigators Association and California Conference of Arson Investigators. He has had past memberships with the California Narcotic Officers Association and California District Attorney Investigators Association.
