Layer 3 Network + Dedicated Internet Connectivity Client: One of the IT Departments in a Northern State Customer's requirement: The customer wanted to establish CAN connectivity (Campus Area Network) for 8 buildings in the campus having approximately 1000 nodes. The 7 buildings and Development block needed connectivity with the Main Computer Building in a star fashion. The customer wanted to connect all the buildings through Optical fiber backbone connectivity. The buildings are at a distance of 400m from the Main Building. All the nodes were within the 100m from each switch. The customer was ready to go for Layer 3 Manageable Switches. The performance level needed to be of 100 Mbps for the LAN nodes. The customer had 2 servers in the Main Computer Building and wanted provision for connecting 2-3 servers in future. The connectivity between switches and servers needed to be of 1000 Mbps. Both Data and Voice were to be terminated in each location. Provision was to be made at the switches end for connecting few more nodes in the future. The customer wanted dedicated leased line access for Internet. Summary of Dax solution: Dax recommended a structured cabling network with 24-Port 10/100 Mbps port Layer 3 Managed switches for connecting the nodes. For terminating the fibre connectivity and for interconnecting all the switches, Dax recommended 24 port 10/100/1000 Mbps unpopulated Layer 3 Switch and 8 Port All-Gigabit Backbone switch in the main block and 8 port Gigabit Backbone switches at all other blocks. The connectivity between the switches and servers was of 1000 Mbps Speed. High-speed 64/32 bit Gigabit Ethernet cards were recommended in the servers for realizing giga speeds between the switch and the servers. Since the customer was looking for a dedicated Always-on link for Internet connection, a 64K Internet leased line solution was recommended. The proposed Router allows sharing of the Internet bandwidth available through the leased line for the entire LAN.

Details of Dax solution: Dax recommended the customer to opt for DX-5726GT, which has 24 # 10/100Mbps ports and 2 # 1000T ports for nodes connectivity. Main computer building: At the Main Computer building, Dax recommended 17 nos of DX-5726GT for connecting 400 nodes. All the DX-5726GT switches were in turn recommended to be connected to DX BT1 0524 G having 24 nos of 10/100/1000 Mbps-unpopulated ports and DX-5744GS, which is an 8 Port All-Gigabit switch. All the other buildings were recommended to be connected to the Main Computer building through multimode Fiber backbone connectivity. DXBT10524G has 24# unpopulated 1000BaseX ports. All the 24 ports support Gigabit Fiber (1000LX, 1000SX) as well as 1000T, allowing flexible usage as per the user's need. The two servers were recommended to be connected to the backbone switch through 1000T ports. Dax DX-2064T, 64/32 bit Gigabit Ethernet cards were recommended for the two servers. For other Buildings: For backbone connectivity, Dax recommended DX-5744GS Layer 3 Managed switch, which has 8 ports, supporting 4 nos of fixed 1000 Base-T ports and 4 open slots for a choice between 1000SX, 1000LX & 1000T Modules as per the user's needs. The buildings were recommended to be connected to Main computer building through Multimode fiber backbone connectivity and the fibre connectivity was recommended to be terminated in DX-5744GS by loading 1000SX module in the available open slots. For the two buildings and Development Block having 50 nodes each, Dax recommended 2 nos of DX- 5726GT, which in turn was recommended to get connected to DX-5744GS. For the two buildings having 100 nodes each, Dax recommended 4 nos of DX-5726GT, which in turn was recommended to get connected to DX-5744GS (as per Network layout diagram). For the two buildings having 200 nodes each, Dax recommended 8 nos of DX-5726GT, which in turn was recommended to get connected to 2 # DX-5744GS.

For Internet Access: For high-speed Internet access for about 250 users, Dax recommended the use of DXMP-1600 Modular Access router to provide leased line connectivity for Internet access. For terminating the leased line connection, Dax recommended the customer to opt for Leased line Modems (a pair of modems consisting of V.35 interface and G.703 interface units). Highlights of Dax solution: Zero configurations required for setting up the switch: All Dax switches support auto detection of 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps speed depending on the configuration. In addition, the ports supports Auto MDI/MDIX with which the switch can automatically recognize if the port is connected to a network node or cascaded to a switch and connect accordingly. Fail Over / Redundancy Link: DX -5744GS switches supports Spanning tree protocol, which enables backup loops between switches. In case if any one of the Switch in the network fails including both Backbone and workgroup switches, the connectivity between the switches will function without fail by choosing the alternative path thereby providing 100 % Redundancy for the entire network Effective network traffic regulation: By implementing VLAN in DX-5044GS in DX-5726GT, the broadcast traffic is restricted to specified workgroup. As a result, the broadcast traffic of a single segment does not reach another segment. This reduces the collision between domains and the network traffic gets regulated. DX-5726GT supports Port based as well as Tagged based VLAN. In -built Routing Function in the Switches: With layer 3 management features in DX-5744GS and DX-5726GT, the switch offers several routing protocols such as RIP, RIP2 and DVMRP and OSPF, ensuring effective segmentation of the network based on IP addresses. In -built web based configuration and Management software: The in-built web based management software available in the DX-5744GS and DX-5726GT enables configuration of the switch stack from any PC running a web browser. Thus, the configuration solution is operating system independent. Support for Management: Both DX -5726GT and DX-5744GS provide SNMP Management features with default MIB2, Bridge MIB, Ethernet MIB and RMON MIB. Thus, the user can manage these switches from any industry Standard NMS software. IGMP IP multi-casting: DX -5726GT Supports IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) "snooping" function, to prevent IGMP data from being broadcasted, thereby avoiding the Bandwidth Wastage. Support for Jumbo Frame packet in DX 5744GS: DX -5744GS supports Jumbo frames. Jumbo Frames are Ethernet frames, which are larger than 1518 bytes that can be used to reduce server CPU utilization and improve wire efficiency of the entire network. By putting more data in fewer packets, Jumbo Frames can increase throughput and decrease CPU utilization, resulting in improved network performance. Support for VLAN and QOS in Giga Ethernet Cards: DX -2064T Giga Ethernet Card supports VLAN functions when connected to a VLAN of the backbone Switch. Thus, the customer gets additional security through port based VLAN available through the switch and MAC based VLAN available through DX-2064T Ethernet cards. Support for 802.1q Priority Queuing in Giga Ethernet Cards: Dax DX-2064T supports Priority queuing feature when connected to the backbone switch supporting 802.1q QOS features for more effective and appropriate bandwidth. This is useful for nodes, which run time sensitive applications requiring bandwidth at specific time intervals such as Video

conferencing, Voice chat etc. Support for Load Balancing in Gigabit Ethernet Card: DX -2064T supports load -balancing feature. Two cards can be installed in a server and connected to a switch, which supports link aggregation. In a network, the Server is the most bandwidth hungry component. In order to make sure that the Server has the maximum bandwidth and can process more network requests, the server can be loaded with 2 # Gigabit cards and the traffic to the server would be handled by both the cards. For both the cards to share the load, it requires special Driver software, which is provided. Support for Fault Tolerance: DX -2064T supports Fault Tolerance feature. Two cards can be installed in a server and connected to a switch, which supports link aggregation. In a network, the Server is the most Critical component. In order to make sure that the Server link is always on and to reduce any link failure, the server can be installed with two Gigabit cards. Thus, the server will be connecting to switch through Dual link. Even if One NIC fails or if one link fails, the secondary card / link will take over. Thus, a fault tolerant design can be established with DX-2064T cards. Support for Jumbo Frames: DX -2064T supports Jumbo frames. Operating System Independency: Dax Switches and Routers are operating system independent and PC / Server independent. Thus, when the user changes their operating system platform, all LAN and WAN connectivity devices would function normally without any need for change in the configuration. Simultaneous sharing of Internet using single public IP address: With NAT feature available in Dax DXMP-1600 router, using a single Internet connection, the whole LAN can have Internet access. The Network Address Translation (NAT) feature keeps local IP addresses hidden so that LAN users are invisible to the outside world. Support for Industry Standard Routing Protocols: Dax Maipu Routers support Industry Standard LAN/WAN Protocols such as Default Gateway, Static Route, RIP V1/V2, OSPF, BGP, DDR, and IGRP, thereby ensuring interoperability with other vendor products. Interoperability: Dax Maipu Routers supports standard compatibility for flawless interoperability. Its modular design supports various interfaces that guarantee easy upgradability and scalability. It's feature-rich routing make the DAX routers versatile, effective platform for any Routing connectivity. Dax Maipu routers support a robust Command Line Interface that complies with the defacto industry standard, saving potential huge training costs. Scalability: DXMP 1600 has free slots, which can be used for providing ISDN backup connectivity in case the primary leased line fails, just by loading the appropriate module. Highlights of Backbone Switch (Dax BT1-0524 G): Non -blocking architecture with 48 Gbps switch fabric: Dax BTI -0524G switch ensures simultaneous peak transfer rate of 2Gbps in all 24 Giga ports enabling effective throughput across the backbone network. 36 Mpps switch throughput: With 36 Mpps switch-forwarding rate, the backbone switch ensures simultaneous Wire speed forwarding rate of 1488000pps across all 24 Gigabit ports simultaneously.

16K Mac Address and 16K IP address entries: Dax BTI-0524G supports 16K MAC and 16K IP entries address, allows integration of switch in large enterprise networks. IEEE 802.1Q tagged based or Port based VLAN supports the full 4096 range of VLANs: Dax BTI -0524G supports both Port based or tagged based VLAN. By implementing VLAN, the broadcast traffic is restricted to each VLAN group. As a result, the broadcast traffic of a single segment does not reach another segment. This reduces the collision between domains and the network traffic gets regulated. Dax BT1-0524G supports up to 4096 VLANs with GVRP for dynamic VLAN registration. IGMP IP multi-casting, filtering and snooping, PIM Multicast Routing: Dax BTI -0524G supports PIM Multicast routing protocol for Multicast application, 802.1d spanning tree algorithm, multiple spanning tree algorithm (802.1s) and rapid spanning tree algorithm (802.1w). Thus the switch offers enhanced spanning tree protocol to ensure maximum availability of network links through fail-safe redundant links as well as rapid convergence of links in the network. Robust Command Line Interface (CLI) that complies with de facto Industry standard: The CLI complies with the de facto industry standard and enables administration via a user-friendly interface and hence, no re-training is required. Web based configuration & Telnet support: Dax BTI-0524G supports Web based configuration. From any standard web browser, the switch can be configured. The switch provides complete control of the switch with a menu-based command line interface accessible in band via telnet or out of band via serial port. Support for Link Aggregation (802.3ad & LACP): The Link Aggregation support of Dax BTI-0524G helps to broaden the bandwidth between different switches dynamically. In addition to adding robustness, link aggregation also serves as a form of redundancy by ensuring that even if one link fails, all network traffic will still be propagated over the remaining links in the aggregation group. Secure Shell (SSH) in-built: With SSH support in DAX BTI-0524G, the user can secure remote connections, protect data from malicious intruders through the Internet and prevent passwords from being stolen. Firmware upgradability through TFTP / WEB management: Easy firmware upgradability protects initial investment. Switch can be easily upgraded from a TFTP server available in the LAN/ WEB management Mode.
