CPTM CANDIDATE S GUIDE 3 CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL IN TRAINING MANAGEMENT CANDIDATE GUIDE This guide explains what is needed to apply for the Certified Professional in Training Management (CPTM ) certification. In it, you will find information regarding eligibility factors and the certification process, followed by a registration form to enroll in the certification program. Background Information CPTM was established to create an internationally accepted level of knowledge, education and experience, by which learning and development leaders will be recognized by the training community. The CPTM program is backed by a body of knowledge collected from learning leaders across the globe and provides an incredibly unique training program designed for future learning leaders. This program s foundation in research provides specific insight on the core competencies and best practices of great training organizations. That research, constructed into an intuitive, hands-on training program, delivers a set of business skills and best practices empowering you to lead the future training needs of your organization. It does this with the development and practice of key skills that learning leaders need to manage training programs that align with the goals of the organization, now and in the future. CPTM candidates come from a variety of backgrounds. Many are currently working as training leaders within an organization. Others are subject matter experts in a particular field who aspire to become training leaders. Still others work as external consultants and wish to better understand their clients roles. Each of these backgrounds brings special areas of expertise to the management of a training organization. Individuals who complete the program and pass the certification exam may use the designation Certified Professional in Training Management or CPTM. Certification Development CPTM s Certification Committee, a partnership between Training Industry and Pearson Learning Solutions, developed the certification to benchmark a standard of expertise in the business of learning. The examination is intended to evaluate the applicant s level of knowledge and skill in responding to the demands of a training manager, both now and in the future.

4 CPTM CANDIDATE S GUIDE Program Cost The tuition for each student is $2,995, payable in advance of the program. Your tuition includes the registration fee, access to all course materials, including 10 online modules, courseware and handouts, access to the in-person or virtual practicum, two attempts at successful completion of the certification exam, and, upon certification, admittance into the CPTM alumni network, including access to exclusive content and events for continuing education. Private sessions and group discounts: If your organization would like to sponsor more than one employee, or you are registering as part of a group, please call (866) 298-4203 or email cptm@trainingindustry.com for reduced rate options. Private sessions are available and can be conducted on site in your organization at a reduced cost. Program Outline The CPTM program provides insights on the core responsibilities and competencies of a training manager, best practices of great training organizations, and how to use those principles when aligning your learning and development plan to the goals of your organization. Resources, processes and technology provide a foundation, from which the training manager creates strategic alignment, identifies needs, develops and delivers solutions, and evaluates performance. The CPTM program is organized into a four-step process: 01 10 Online Learning Modules: CPTM candidates are given access to the CPTM Learning Community, where they complete 10 online modules and their associated assessments. Each module contains multiple lessons and takes approximately one to two hours to complete, for a maximum of 20 hours of online pre-work. Please note that candidates are expected to complete all 10 modules, as well as the online assessments, prior to attending the practicum. The Evolution of the Training Industry reviews the history of the profession, highlighting social and economic shifts that help to prepare for future changes and innovation within the industry. Managing a High-performance Training Organization outlines the process capabilities of high-performing training organizations and explains how to prioritize your efforts to drive performance for the business. Creating Strategic Alignment Leveraging Business-centric and Demand-based Training Models examines how a business-centric training model and a demand-based training model create strategic alignment between the training organization and the business. Mastering the Process of Selecting and Managing Resources analyzes the decisionmaking process for acquiring and managing quality information, internal and external resources, and costs associated with each, allowing training initiatives to be scaled easily to meet increased or decreased business demand. Leveraging Technology to Enhance Organizational Learning examines how to leverage technology as a powerful tool to deliver knowledge, engage the learner, promote active learning, enable learner mobility and enhance knowledge transfer.

CPTM CANDIDATE S GUIDE 5 Achieving Business Goals through Optimizing Your Organization s Training Processes demonstrates how to define, structure and manage the organization s training processes in ways that help the business achieve its goals. Developing Solutions Based on Needs Analysis and Business Acumen focuses on analysis that leverages both business acumen and results to craft solutions that mobilize resources, processes and technology to improve business performance. Choosing Development and Delivery Strategies that Drive Performance details instructional design and learning delivery methods, taking into account critical considerations, such as scale, work environment, geography, time to launch and update frequency. Assessing Business and Training Performance for Better Outcomes teaches how to evaluate and interpret results, creating a feedback loop for improvement in the business, training organization and training initiatives. Preparing for the CPTM Practicum reviews all module content and prepares for success in the practicum. 02 Practicum Pre-Work: To prepare for an engaging and results-focused practicum, you will be asked to gather information specific to your organization s goals and any plans that are currently in place for delivering sustained training to meet those goals. This step is designed to teach you how to identify critical information for decision making inside the organization and gather real-world intelligence to assist you in your role on the job. 03 Practicum: The practicum is designed around a team-based business simulation focused on helping you apply the knowledge gained from the online courses to develop real-world training solutions. Confronted with a business problem, teams of three to five work together to diagnose the root cause of the problem, develop a solution using learning and development, identify appropriate success metrics, and sell the solution to their fellow practicum participants, who act as constituents within the simulated business. Each practicum includes a keynote discussion with an experienced learning leader, who has faced many of the same challenges you face at your company. 04 The Final Exam: Successful completion of the exam is the last step in achieving your CPTM certification. The two-hour online exam tests your ability to apply best practices using your understanding of the core responsibilities of the training manager. You will be given access to the exam on the last day of your practicum. The exam must be taken within six months of the close of the practicum; however, we recommend taking the exam as soon as possible to ensure the materials are fresh. You will have two attempts to successfully complete the certification exam. Every additional attempt beyond the two included will result in a $99 administration fee.

6 CPTM CANDIDATE S GUIDE Examination Content The examination is administered online and includes 100 questions, to be completed within a two-hour time period. Candidates must receive a 70 or higher to pass the CPTM certification. The exam is made up of nine major subject areas. Each subject area is covered on the exam, but specific questions will vary with each administration. This certification exam is updated every two years, following a review by the examination committee. Policy on Rescheduling or Canceling a Certification Date If a change needs to be made to your program application (cancellation, transfer or substitution), Training Industry must receive written notice via email at cptm@trainingindustry.com or fax at (919) 653-4999. A substitution or transfer made fewer than 30 business days prior to the practicum start date will result in a $400 change fee, and tuition will be valid toward another practicum for a period of one year. Only one re-enrollment opportunity is allowed. Failure to attend the practicum without written notice will result in the forfeiture of the full course price. Cancellation made no more than five days after registration and prior to accessing the e-learning portion of the program will result in a full refund, minus a $100 application fee. If Training Industry is forced to cancel a course for any reason, liability is limited to the application fee only. In the event of inclement weather, Training Industry will hold the practicum if the instructor is present, and no refunds will be issued. If the instructor is not able to be present, a credit valid for one year will be issued. What to Bring to the In-Person Practicum Please bring one form of government-issued photo identification and your completed pre-work worksheets. Dress is business casual. When to Arrive The first two days of the in-person practicum begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.; day three runs from 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. on the first morning to sign in and meet your facilitator and fellow attendees. The start and end times of the virtual practicum vary. See practicum schedule for specific details. Examination Results Within three business days of successfully completing the exam, you will be awarded your social badge and admitted into the CPTM alumni network. You will receive your certificate of achievement within six weeks of successfully passing the exam. Terms of Certification The CPTM credential is valid for two years. Renewal after two years requires 24 hours of validated continuing education credit. Falsification or misrepresentation of application information will invalidate the applicant s certification.
