1 Graduate Programs in Education Goucher College 1021 Dulaney Valley Road Baltimore, MD (410) Interested in receiving Special Education Certification and a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree? Good News! Goucher College and Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) have a partnership to offer a cohort of Special Education courses. For those who are teaching under a conditional teaching certificate, the courses will count towards Goucher College s MSDE-approved Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree with Special Education Certification (either grades 1-8 or 6-adult). Details of course requirements for the degree are available at If you are already certified in Elementary Education or a content area, these courses can help prepare you to take and pass the Praxis II Special Education Exams which are required to add Special Education Certification (either grades 1-8 or 6-adult) to your existing certificate. Even Better News! Providing there is sufficient enrollment in the cohort, all special education courses and most other M.A.T. degree course requirements will be offered in a school in Anne Arundel County. An enrollment of 15 participants is needed to offer a class in Anne Arundel County. In addition, teachers working in Anne Arundel County Public Schools may qualify for additional funding in this high needs certification. Please contact the AACPS Human Resources Office for more details on the Critical Shortage Area Agreement. How much will the courses cost? A total of 15 credits in special education will be offered at the reduced tuition cohort rate (ED 686, ED 688, ED 689, ED 690, and ED 691). Each participant must pay a $75.00 non-refundable registration fee per 3 credit course to Goucher College. After participants successfully complete the course with the minimum grade required (B or higher), Goucher will bill Anne Arundel County for tuition reimbursement for each participant. (Participants who drop a class after the approved add/drop period or who do not earn at least a grade of B, will be billed directly by Goucher for the full tuition rate.) Students who withdraw after the first class are subject to the withdrawal policies of Goucher College and may owe a portion or all of the $750 tuition that would have been paid by AACPS if the student had completed the course. In addition, for participants who choose to complete the M.A.T. degree, direct reimbursement from Anne Arundel County is also available for the non-cohort courses, but without a discount in the tuition rate. For the Goucher College academic year (Summer 09 Spring 10), the tuition rate for non-cohort classes is $415 per credit. As a participant in the special education cohort, you would be eligible to pay the difference between the Goucher College tuition amount and the Anne Arundel County reimbursement rate ($1245 for a 3 credit class - $750 reimbursed directly to Goucher College = $495 out of pocket cost).
2 Please note that, according to the TAAAC Negotiated Agreement, Unit I members shall be reimbursed for a maximum of six (6) semester hours of college credit per teaching year (September through August). If an AACPS employee wishes to take reduced tuition cohort courses beyond the 6 credits reimbursed by Anne Arundel County, then the AACPS employee would be responsible for paying the registration fee ($75) and the reimbursement amount ($750.00) directly to Goucher College. The regular Goucher College tuition rate (currently $415 per credit) would apply to any non-cohort classes being taken in Anne Arundel County or at Goucher College. What do I need to do if I am interested in applying to the M.A.T. program? Call the Graduate Programs in Education Department at Goucher College ( ) or Tammy Adams (tadams@goucher.edu) to receive an application packet. Complete the application for admission into the Master of Arts in Teaching Program. This includes the application form, two letters of recommendation, official transcripts from undergraduate degree and graduate courses (if applicable). The essay and application fee are waived. What if I want to start by only taking a few courses in the reduced tuition cohort option? You can enroll in up to 12 credits as a non-matriculating student before having to officially apply to one of the degree programs. Complete the cohort application/registration form at the end of this document to register for the spring semester.
