Experienced administrators are the key to the enduring success of the HOME Program. Together we have been able to commit nearly a million affordable housing units. The Certified HOME Specialist Program is our opportunity to recognize this vital expertise and I am pleased to invite our PJ colleagues to join us in this process. Pamela Patenaude, Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development Over the past 15 years, thousands of dedicated staff at participating jurisdictions (PJs) across the country have worked to create flexible, effective and yet compliant programs that meet the affordable housing needs of low income families. Until now, there has been no national mechanism to acknowledge and reward this critical expertise. To recognize today s HOME Program experts and encourage tomorrow s new generation of PJ staff, HUD s Office of Affordable Housing Programs is pleased to announce a new training initiative The Certified HOME Program Specialist. Over time, this training program will offer HUD-approved professional certificates on a wide range of community development topics. The first course in the new series of planned professional certifications is designed to recognize PJ staff who are experts in the HOME Program rules and regulations. The Certified HOME Program Specialist Regulations course will provide an opportunity for PJ staff to take an indepth refresher class on the HOME Program rules while sharing best practices and lessons learned with fellow HOME administrators. After participating in the course, attendees will take an exam on the basic HOME Program requirements. The exam includes short answer, true/false and multiple choice questions on essential HOME requirements. Attendees who pass the exam will receive a signed certificate from HUD designating them as a Specialist in the HOME Regulations and they may use this designation on their resume and in other professional contexts. In addition, Certified HOME Program Specialists will be qualified to take other, advanced HOME courses. The Certified HOME Program Specialist Regulations program is open to any PJ or HUD staff member with at least one year of HOME experience. Details on scheduled deliveries can be found on the next page. Information is also available online at the CPD Training webpage at www.hud.gov/offices/ cpd/affordablehousing/index.cfm.
