Prepare your IP network for HD video conferencing Bogdan Voaidas, Knut Bjørkli and Robin Støckert HERD Energy - Project: Sustainable Energy and Environment in the Western Balkans (SEE-WB)
Target groups super users, first line support and IT/network administrators 2
Course overview This course gives an overview of the impact of HD video conferencing on a converged IP network, and suggests approaches for supporting a high quality video conferencing service. 3
End user requirements The video conferencing solution will only be successful to the extent that it meets the needs of end users. These requirements include: Ease of use. A variety of conferencing options. Presence capabilities. Video on Demand/scheduled 4
IT Prerequisites Increase and manage bandwidth/qos Coordinate all elements of the video conferencing network Provision, deploy and management Enforce security Ensure scalability VOD/Streaming 5
Video Conferencing Bandwidth demand 6
Bandwidth and QoS Bandwidth use is an integral part of QoS. Estimate call density and patterns Create a spreadsheet to find peaks 7
Real time traffic and QoS All video conferencing traffic is real-time traffic needs to be given proper (QoS) support both in LAN and WAN 8
Demand managment If network analysis shows insufficient band width on critical links, the options are: Bandwidth upgrade Reduce voice or video conferencing demand (HD-SD) Compression / Application Acceleration 9
MCU Bandwidth Demand Each client must have bandwidth to support negotiated traffic stream with: Audio Video data app. MCU must handle all connections and hence the total sum of bandwidth. 10
Converged Network Links Converged network links: data traffic and real-time (voice or video) How to evaluate WAN links Determine real-time load (audio/video) Determine data application load Total bandwidth utilization of the link? Need for dedicated network lines? 11
Video Conferencing System Setup IP address video conferencing system DHCP Fixed IP address Subnet Mask LAN Gateway 12
DNS or WINS WINS Server Configuration DNS Server Configuration Host: Domain: Primary DNS: Secondary DNS: 13
LAN-based collaboration Gatekeeper DNS name or IP address (if necessary) Alias for the video conferencing system Extension (Terminal ID or E.164 number) for the video conferencing system 14
SNMP Information IP address network management station SNMP community string 15
Dialling Directory Information If you intend to use central dialling directories Central Directory (LDAP) Server URL or IP address Port number (default is 389) Directory service root: Server type: Account password: 16
SIP For systems using SIP as the signalling protocol, you need to know: Transport Protocol: UDP/TCP User Name: User Password: SIP Registrar Server: SIP Proxy Server: 17
Firewall and ports 18
Firewall and ports Use external IP-adress NAT Firewall Traversal Video border proxy 19
Remote administration Configure Manage Monitor Diagnostics Via web-browser. https://hostname https://10.11.12.13 Admin ID and pwd 20
Practical exercise Setup of the VC-system with the correct network parameters Test Call Check video and audio quality Testing remote control via web Testing of quality vs bandwidth Testing network speed Testing half/full duplex 21
