Things to consider Funeral venue Number of attendees It is helpful to consider the number of people that may attend the funeral service when choosing the funeral venue and location. Exact numbers are impossible to determine however an approximate number can be determined taking into consideration the number of family members and friends attending. Venue Size Please discuss your needs with our funeral consultant who will be able to assist with booking a suitable location. Small venues with limited seating capacity (for example less than 40 seats) are not recommended for funeral services that are open to the public via open invitation or advertised in newspaper funeral notices. Small venues can be a nice intimate location to hold a funeral service for small private gatherings, however when a venue overflows it is hard for everyone to feel a part of the service if they are standing outside or can't hear properly. Medium to Large venues are suitable for funeral services that are open to the public via open invitation or advertised in newspaper funeral notices. Extra large venues such as Town Halls, Auditoriums or even Sports Stadiums can also be organised if you feel the funeral service will attract a large number of attendees. After the Funeral The Committal In some cases such as a Grave-side funeral service or Chapel service at a Crematorium, the committal will take place all in the one location. However if the funeral service is held at a separate location such as a Church or Independent Chapel, the committal may follow the funeral service in another location such as a Cemetery or Crematorium Chapel. If this is the case, take into consideration the travel time from the location of the main funeral service to the location of the committal. The Wake or Informal Gathering An informal gathering may also need to be organised to take place after the formal proceedings. Consider the location and travelling time back to where the wake or refreshments will be held. This may be held at the same location in some circumstances if the chosen venue has adequate facilities, or it may be held at a function centre. If the family wish to hold the wake at their home, we can organise catering or you may choose to handle the catering yourself with the help of the family. funeral day and time It is important to remember that the day and time of the funeral cannot be confirmed until various aspects of the funeral arrangements have been coordinated by our office. Celebrants or clergy, chapels or churches, gravediggers or crematoriums are just some of the things we need some time to coordinate. Your funeral consultant will call you and confirm a day and time for the funeral service once all these details have been confirmed and are in place. We advise that it is best to wait for this confirmation before telling family and friends to avoid any confusion. celebrants and clergy Please note that your funeral consultant will organise your chosen celebrant or clergy on your behalf, (if you do not already have someone organised). They will make contact with you and arrange to meet with you to discuss the service in detail. Please note that it is important to have a professional Civil Celebrant to lead the service and we have a number of trusted celebrants to choose from. viewings If a viewing is required, your funeral consultant will organise to take clothing and other chosen items at the time of the funeral arrangement. A private viewing can take place on the day of the funeral, prior to the service commencing, or at a viewing chapel. The day, time and location will be booked in once arrangements have been made. Death certificate The death certificate is an official copy from the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages, detailing family information collected during the funeral consultation, and also the cause of death. If requested, a copy of the Death Certificate can be organised through Luke Apthorpe & Family, or you may prefer to organise its collection at Births Deaths & Marriages. It takes approximately 2-3 weeks for the certificate to be sent to our office. We will contact you to confirm a collection date.

flowers During the funeral arrangement, your funeral consultant will discuss floral arrangements for on top of the casket or coffin. Additional floral requests such as single stem flowers, wreaths and church flowers can be made by calling our florist shop directly or by contacting your funeral consultant. Additional flowers that are ordered are able to be delivered to any location we conduct a funeral service. Flowers can be given to the family after the funeral, or left with the casket if preferred. Luke Apthorpe À La Mode Floral Boutique Phone 4937 5186-186 Barton Street, Kurri Kurri www.alamode.com.au dvd photo tributes Please note that not all locations are suitable for a DVD photo tribute, due to facilities etc. It is important to note that the tribute must be properly configured to be played in a DVD player. A DVD is preferred, however each location will have individual requirements. Please note that a powerpoint slideshow is not recommended. Our creative team is experienced at producing professional DVD photo tributes and this can be organised by contacting your funeral consultant. We scan original photographs or use digital images with music to produce a professionally produced DVD. Images are scanned in at high resolution to ensure the images fit on any size TV screen or projector screen. We also edit, crop, and repair images if needed. music Please allow enough time for this to be organised. Where a location does not have the proper facilities to present a DVD tribute, we are able to organise equipment at an additional cost. Due to time restraints in some circumstances, 2 3 songs is recommended however depending on the format of the service time may be available for more music to be played. Order of service booklets An Order of Service booklet is a way of following what is taking place during the funeral service. An order of service booklet is appropriate for both church and non-religious services. The booklets can be printed with a colour photograph and include a life story or poems. A church service will include prayers, hymns and bible readings. Our creative team will liase with the celebrant or clergy officiating at the funeral service and print a professional booklet that can be kept as a keepsake after the service. It is also recommended that music on CD is provided on an original CD (as burnt copies can be unreliable). Digital copies must be provided in MP3 format on a USB drive. Music and sound equipment varies according to the location provided and we at all times prefer to receive your chosen music prior to the funeral service. It is important to discuss your choice of music with the celebrant or clergy, and carefully consider the lyrics to ensure the song is appropriate. Please also be respectful of Clergy or the Churches advise or policy on secular music. Your funeral consultant will be able to collect the chosen music during the funeral arrangement. If music is not given to your consultant, please deliver music or any other items to our head office in Kurri Kurri as this is where the hearse will leave from on the day of the funeral service. Professional musicians can be organised through your funeral consultant and this will be discussed during the funeral arrangement. It is important that enough time is given for us to organise this and ensure the availability of the musician.

monuments When the time comes to consider placing a monument or headstone, it is important to select a monumental company that you can trust and rely on. We understand that you are expecting perfection in workmanship and a quality finished product. Our Monumental & Stone team members are qualified stonemasons, and have produced impressive work in many of our local cemeteries in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. Consultations are by appointment and examples of our work can be viewed on our website. pre-arranged funerals Planning in advance for a funeral can sometimes be an uncomfortable topic to discuss with your family, however it can often be a relief, knowing your choices and in some circumstances payment has been made. Whether you choose to pay in advance, or simply record your wishes, Luke Apthorpe & Family can guide you through this process. Not only does this relieve family members of making important decisions about things they may be unaware of, but can also relieve the financial burden. Arranging and paying in advance is similar to planning for your retirement or making a will. You will be able to choose exactly what you want and be assured that your wishes be carried out. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) MDF is the result of a complicated process where the wood is broken down into its fibre and then pressed into a smooth board. MDF is also referred to as Craftwood or Customwood. As MDF does not have a timber grain on its surface a paper veneer, DAP, bearing a timber grain design or a solid timber veneer is glued to the board. DAP (Diallyl Phthalate) Board DAP is the term used to describe paper with a simulated timber grain that is glued onto MDF or particleboard. Plywood Manufactured from veneers of solid timber adhered together, plywood is a high strength and durable sheet of board. To demonstrate the price differences in coffins and caskets, below we have a solid timber coffin and also a plywood coffin that look similar but there is a noticeable price difference due to the type of materials used. If you have organised a complete package funeral, we ask that a full payment is made up-front as all expenses are finalised prior to the funeral arrangements commencing. If you have organised a fully personalised service, there may be costs that cannot be finalised until after the day of the funeral and we therefore require a deposit of at least 75% of the total, with the full balance to be paid in full within 7 days after the funeral service. If there are funds set aside for funeral arrangements such as Life Insurance, Funeral Insurance, Funeral Bonds etc, we ask that you provide current documentation to allow us to assist in claiming these funds. Please note that adjustments may be made to the estimate given during the funeral arrangement (e.g. newspaper notice) and where a 75% deposit is received prior to the funeral and where the full balance is settled within 7 days, an administration fee of $275 inclusive of GST ($250 excluding GST) will be removed from the funeral expenses invoice. If you have any concerns in regards to how to make payments or if there are concerns in regards to the ability to make payments due to financial hardship, please discuss this with your funeral consultant immediately as there are options available for these circumstances. Please note that if additional requests are made after the initial consultation, the expenses involved will be discussed with you at the time of request and will also be added to the funeral expenses invoice or an additional invoice will be issued. Additional requests that are not covered by a pre-paid funeral fund will result in an additional invoice being issued. Some items in a Pre-Paid Funeral contract may be described as an allowance or to the value of meaning additional costs will be charged if the value is exceeded.

Who is Luke Apthorpe? Most funeral homes are passed down from generation to generation or owned by large national or global companies, but Luke Apthorpe & Family has been built from scratch by an ambitious young man who at the age of 16 saw a need for quality care in his local community. At the age of 20, in the year 2000, Luke Apthorpe opened his own company and funeral home, making him Australia s youngest funeral home owner. Since then he has held Police Contracts serving the entire Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Lower Hunter Valley, Upper Hunter Valley and Port Stephens regions. He has also expanded his services to include his own monumental mason s division and a boutique florist shop. In 2013 he was elected by his peers to represent the Australian Funeral Directors Association on the NSW/ACT Divisional Council, and Luke represents the Newcastle, Hunter Valley and South West Slopes regions of New South Wales. Luke is trained and qualified in advanced mortuary skills and has had extensive experience in the industry, serving a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and faiths. Luke is a member of Blake s international emergency response team and in 2007 he travelled to the Republic of Cameroon in West Africa to assist with the Kenya Airways Flight 507 crash, and assist with the repatriation of the 105 passengers back to 29 different countries. The funeral home operates from a large purpose built facility in the Hunter Valley, and the company serves all suburbs of the Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Myall Lakes, Central Coast and Sydney regions, along with a trusted and experienced International Repatriation service.
