The Charles R. Elmer Scholarship Foundation The Charles R. Elmer Scholarship Application for Graduating Seniors
2 Charles Robert Elmer January 18, 1909 May 31, 1997 The Charles R. Elmer Scholarship honors a remarkable man, educator, and true gentleman who committed his life to education and the encouragement of others to further their own pursuit of higher learning. Born in Ironton, Ohio in 1909, Charles graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1931. He moved to Painesville in 1944 and later earned a Master s Degree in Education from Case Western Reserve University in 1948. After teaching at Champion Junior High, Charles moved on to Thomas W. Harvey High School in 1951 where he remained until his retirement eighteen years later. During his teaching career at Harvey High School, he was named Teacher of the Year and in 1958 the students dedicated the Anvil to Charles in recognition of his help and guidance. It is this lifelong dedication to education and the understanding of its importance in the development of an individual that led him to establish the Charles R. Elmer Scholarship Foundation. The purpose of the Charles R. Elmer Scholarship is to encourage and assist graduates of Harvey High School to pursue a diversity of post high school educational experiences. Candidates may apply annually for financial support for tuition at two and four year colleges and universities. The scholarship is also applicable to a wide variety of other learning programs such as but not limited to: vocational programs, technical and trade schools, business and secretarial schools, truck driving and diesel technology programs, medical and dental technician schools, cosmetology and beauty schools, culinary schools, pilot and airplane mechanic schools, and computer training programs. The Scholarship Committee will consider any other legitimate educational program or individual course for possible tuition assistance. The Charles R.
