4 theology @ nwu: faculty of theology The NWU Potchefstroom Campus Unit for Open Distance Learning creates the opportunity for theological education for all. If you are, or want to be, a Theological student to become a Missionary or Youth Worker, or Pastor within any of the reformed, evangelical or related traditions, or you are already practising as a religion professional and want to further your Theological education, the NWU Unit for Open Distance Learning offers a variety of academic theological programmes without you having to be near a NWU Campus. This is a unique and creative way, in which you yourself determine the place, time and tempo of your learning; you can give new momentum to your career through professional training. Electronic as well as telephonic support is available, with personal contact facilitation contact at the study Centres. This is unique because: It allows you to study full-time while you work. It gives you the opportunity for vocationally directed training that gives new momentum to your career. You can determine your own tempo of learning on the basis of your circumstances. It is affordable. You receive study support. There are no closing dates for applications. Prospective students can apply for study throughout the year. As a guideline the following is suggested: Open Learning Distance Learning Programmes Degrees in Theology Apply until 31 October to be considered for examinations by April of the next year. Apply until 31 May to be considered for examinations by September. For 2013, there will be a second semester intake, with exams in November 2013. From 2014 students will follow an open learning schedule. A multi-entry and multi-exit approach is followed as prescribed by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). Please note: The ODL delivery may vary between the different qualifications. Students can choose between the following qualification programmes: Three-year degree in Theology [BTh]: Biblical Studies Church Planting Church Ministry* Theological Foundations Theology One-year Honours Degree in Theology [HONS BA]: HONS BA in Theology *Students completing this degree to become pastors in the AFM Church must complete this degree through the AFM Off Campus Learning Centre.
methods of delivery and study centres The Unit for Open Distance Learning offers these theology qualifications through three methods: Telematic Studies Full-time students, who, due to circumstances cannot enroll at one of the NWU campuses, can enroll for theology studies by utilizing this method of delivery. The qualification program is completed on a correspondence basis with direct contact between the lecturer and the student through the NWU s e-fundi platform. Study material is available electronically and / or in hard copy for registered students. Examinations are written at NWU examination Centres nationwide. Off-campus Learning Centre Students not enrolled as contact students at one of the NWU campuses, but who would still like to have contact classes, can sign up for studies at any of the NWU s Off Campus Learning Centres. Contact classes and the evaluation of assignments are done by NWU appointed staff at the Off Campus Learning Centre. Study material is available electronically and / or in hard copy for registered students. All examinations are conducted at the Centre itself, with the staff at the Potchefstroom Campus setting all examination papers and assessing all answer sheets, thus ensuring that all students has reached the same outcomes after having received the same quality education. Language Medium Telematic studies as well as studies at Off Campus Learning Centres are available in both Afrikaans and English. The language medium of studies at an institution with which the NWU has a collaboration agreement, is determined by the institution. Collaboration Institutions Prior to 2009 the NWU were allowed to enter into collaboration agreements with theological training institutions after their qualification programmes have been approved and assessed by the NWU. Students of these institutions registered with the NWU, and these students followed the programme of the Institution as has been approved and is continuously moderated by the NWU. programmes Admission Criteria BTh Programmes The requirements for all BTh qualifications is a Senior Certificate that complies with the minimum statutory matriculation requirements for admission to a bachelor s degree and an APS count of 22 or higher. HONS BA in THEOLOGY Admission requirements for this programme is a BTh degree with an average of at least 65%. Students who have completed a B-Degree with sufficient theological content can apply for B-Status in Theology, which gives the student access to the HONS BA in Theology programme. Duration BTh Programmes The minimum duration of the BTh degree programme is three years. Institutions, Off Campus Learning Centres and through Telematic Learning. HONS BA in THEOLOGY The HONS BA in Theology programme is available at all Off Campus Learning Centres and at selected Collaboration Institutions as well as through Telematic Learning. According to the 2010 figures of the Department of Higher Education and Training (published in 2012), the NWU rated very well, benchmarked against the other 22 higher education institutions in South Africa. Here is the evidence: In 2010 the NWU was the third largest university in South Africa based on the total head count, namely 55 732 (in 2009 it was 50 59, which is an increase of 10.2%). In terms of distance students, the NWU was the largest in SA. For total number of degrees and diplomas awarded in 2010, namely 15 03, the NWU rated second in the sector (2009: 13 445, an Increase of 12.2%). Teaching-learning scoreboard for 2011: The NWU s undergraduate pass rate for 2011 was 5,2% for contact students and 5,3% for distance students, putting the NWU well ahead of the national average. With regard to the graduation rate of 26,6% for contact students and 29, 9% for distance students, the NWU once again finds itself in the top echelon of the country s universities.
