PRODUCT CATALOGUE independent living Ireland The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned Maya Angelou

Who we are? Independent Living Ireland s (ILI) vision is to provide telecare and assistive living technology solutions in support of digital re-ablement and independent living for older people, those with disabilities and with general health issues. This is introduced to improve quality of life and personal dignity, to give peace of mind and ease the burden of care on family and friends while reducing the overall level of re-admissions to hospitals. We have established demonstration and information centres in both Athlone and Ballyconnell which allow visitors to view products and sample the equipment used, all explained by ILI staff. The centres also have an important role in raising awareness of the benefits of telecare in the wider community. ILI are commited to training on both a general awareness and a more technical level for a wide range of groups such as primary care teams, therapists and social workers. While the centres showcase the latest in telecare and assistive living technologies in an environment that mimics a typical home setting, this document provides an overview of some of the products and services we have available including our bespoke assessment packages. Along with the advice of an ILI professional, this will help health sector groups, families and carers to choose the best, most suited, technology solutions.

Telecare Assessments Solutions Are you worried about yours or a loved one s failing mobility? Perhaps a recent spell in hospital or diagnosis of an illness has caused concern. Maintaining independence, in the home in safe and familiar surroundings, can help alleviate the additional stresses such problems can bring. Everyone is different - and that includes their capabilities, their lifestyle, their home environment and their level of support. It is only through detailed assessment and a personalisation of telecare that we can offer the best possible solution for your needs. We have developed bespoke assessment tools which can provide you, and your family, with piece of mind, promote independence and encourage better lifestyle habits. sleeping patterns and lifestyle habits. From this report we can provide a set of recommendations to improve safety and encourage independence in your life. Gold Package As with the silver package this will deliver a detailed telecare report and will also include an extra visit from our telecare consultant who will further assess your needs and discuss any worries or concerns that you may have. This includes an assessment of your mobility, sight, hearing and memory. Also diet and social inclusion, which are proven measures of a healthier more energetic lifestyle. A detailed report and a set of recommendations can encourage this and ensure you remain independent in your home in the best possible conditions. Bronze Package A professional telecare consultant will visit your home and carry out a detailed assessment based on your needs, risks, worries and daily routine. From this we can establish and prescribe the best telecare solution for you. Silver Package For the period of one week a system of discreet monitors and devices will be installed in your home under the guidance of our telecare consultant. After the one week period the monitors will be removed and our telecare consultant will further assess your memory and general mobility. You will then be delivered a detailed report which will highlight changes in your daily routine,

Bed Occupancy Monitor The bed occupancy monitor Unit is fully programmable and can be setup to monitor 3 types of calls relating to the user including leaving the bed and not returning during set times, not getting into bed (at night) or not leaving the bed (in the morning) When leaving the bed during the night, lights can be switched on using an optional X10 module reducing the risk of a fall. The user can also switch the light on or off from the bed. Sensitivity can be adjusted when locating the pad either under or over the mattress. Dimensions 120 65x150mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is selfmonitored and automatically reported. Bed Exit Sensor This bed exit sensor will raise an alarm after a set period when the person does not return to bed. The unit is set to alarm as a default after 30 minutes if the person does not return to bed. If required other pre-set times can be requested when the order is placed. The minimum time period is 15 seconds and up to a time period in hours if required. Dimensions 90 55x28mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is selfmonitored and automatically reported. Chair Alarm Monitor The pressure pad can be placed beneath a cushion in a chair. An alarm is raised to the CareUnity, or Carer Alert unit, as soon as pressure is taken off the pressure pad indicating that the user is potentially at risk, this will activate and notify the monitoring centre or local carer. It is essential that the pressure pad is located correctly for optimum operation when the user is sitting in the chair. Dimensions 330 280x30mm WxHxD Battery Life 4 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is selfmonitored and automatically reported

Door Contacts Opening of doors and windows can be monitored at certain times of the day or night using door contacts. This allows the carephone to raise the alarm to the monitoring centre if a person leaves the house at an unusual time providing security and safety to those who are vulnerable or prone to wandering. Door contacts can be used to monitor intruders and, in conjunction with, any PIRs can provide a basic intruder alarm function when the CareUnity carephone is set in its away mode. Dimensions Control Unit 40 80 x 20mm WxHxD Battery Life 2 years, dependent on usage, Low battery status is selfmonitored and automatically reported Carbon Monoxide Alarm When gas appliances become faulty or have not been serviced correctly, a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide can occur. As this gas is colourless and odourless, it is essential that early detection is achieved. Installing a carbon monoxide detector adjacent to the appliances in question will ensure an emergency alarm call is raised before the gas build-up reaches a concentration which is hazardous to health. Dimensions 85 99x55mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years average, dependent on activations. Low battery status is self-monitored and automatically reported. Bogus Caller/Panic Button Fear of crime can be significantly reduced if the emergency services can be reached at the touch of a button. A Bogus Caller/Panic Button, installed next to the front door or bed-side, allows the user to raise an alarm if they fear that an intruder or bogus caller is trying to gain access to their property. Dimensions 86/86/38mm WxHxD Battery life 5 years average, dependent on activations. Low battery status is self-monitored and automatically reported to the control centre.

Flood Detector The Flood detector is installed within the bathroom or kitchen of a property and will alert a user when a sink/basin or bath overflow occurs. It will also detect water on the floor from other sources such as a burst pipe. This neat, unobtrusive detector will provide an early warning of any potential flood situations which can avoid large repair bills, inconvenience and insurance costs. Dimensions 90 55 x 28mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported. Epilepsy Sensor The Epilepsy Sensor will raise an alarm to a monitoring centre or other alarm recipient when a seizure is detected. The sensor is designed to detect Tonic-Clonic (Grand Mal) seizure types only. That is, during the seizure there must be convulsions (shaking or jerking movements). Any other seizure types such as partial or absence seizures without movement would not be detected. It is equipped with a movement sensor that is positioned between the bed base and mattress. Dimensions of Monitor 150 105 x 45mm Battery Life- 12 hour s full battery backup. Universal transmitter 5 years. Low battery status is self-monitored Low Temperature Detector During the winter months, one of the greatest dangers to the elderly and vulnerable is insufficient heating of their property. If this continues over a period of days, or even hours, hypothermia can set in within a surprisingly short time. A low temperature sensor located within the property allows monitoring of the ambient temperature with the dwelling. If the temperature drops, an emergency alarm is automatically raised. Dimensions 88 88x56mm WxHxD Battery Life 4 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported.

Fall Detector (Wrist Worn) The wrist worn fall detector is a discreet way of wearing a fall trigger with an integral alarm button.it uses technology to calculate its position as the person wearing it moves around prior to a fall. When a fall alarm is raised, the technology allows a small period of time to verify that the fall is real. The device has 2 settings whereby the self-cancellation period can be left on or turned off for a quicker response. Dimensions Diameter 41mm thickness 17.5mm Battery Life 2 years Low battery status is self-monitored Range Depending on building construction up to 100m Enuresis Sensor Provides an early warning for individuals prone to incontinence whilst sleeping. A sensor pad placed between the bedding and mattress allows detection of excess amounts of moisture. If this occurs, an emergency alarm call can be transmitted. The cotton pads are machine washable and must be dried before replacing. It is attached to a control unit by a very slim wire which is designed not to disturb the user while in bed. Dimensions Control Unit 80 40x20mm, Bed Mat 600 400mm Battery life 5 years avg, dependent on activations. Low battery status is self-monitored and automatically reported. Heat Detector In certain locations of a property i.e. the kitchen, smoke detectors may result in too many false activations. Installing a dedicated heat detector can solve this problem whilst retaining a high level of protection to provide reassurance for the user. Should a fire occur, causing a rapid rise in temperature, the unit will activate once 58 C is reached raising a local alert. In addition, a call to a carer or monitoring centre can be provided. Dimensions Diameter 126mm, depth 35mm 17mm for radio module mattress Battery Life 5 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported.

Pill Dispenser At pre-programmed times the pill dispenser carousel rotates to allow the user to take the appropriate medication. An audible alert tone is provided as a medication reminder. The unit knows the medication has been removed from the dispenser when it is tipped up, so if the medication has not been taken after a pre-set time the lid closes and a radio link to the carephone will automatically call the control centre or carer. Dimensions diameter 180mm, depth 47mm Battery Life Up to 12 months. A visual indication of Low battery (4 x AA batteries) on the pill dispenser or by an alert to the monitoring centre. Smoke Detector It is essential to have a smoke detector fitted in any home, and the reassurance this provides can now be greatly enhanced with our smoke alarm.when a fire is detected, the unit provides a loud audible warning to the user automatically sending an emergency alarm signal through the CareUnity carephone. The smoke detector is supplied with a mattress for easy installation, and several smoke alarms can be installed within the property if required. Dimensions Base diameter 85mm, Depth 60mm Battery Life 5 years dependant on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported Verso Fall Detector A fall condition occurs when the Fall Detector is in a position of 70 degrees or greater. When a fall condition is detected, the CareUnity carephone, or Carer Alert, sounds a warning. If the Fall Detector is put back in its upright position this warning tone will stop. If the Fall Detector remains in its fall condition for more than a predefined time, the CareUnity carephone will call the monitoring centre or the Carer Alert. Range Depending on building construction up to 100m line of sight range Battery Life 3 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported.

Radio Pullcord In extra care situations it may be preferable to have fixed emergency call points in certain rooms of the home. Pull Cords can be ceiling mounted in convenient locations allowing the user to raise an alarm if their pendant trigger is not accessible. The alarm is raised by simply pulling down on the distinctive orange cord, which incorporates two triangular handles to provide ease of grip. Dimensions Diameter 70mm/depth 84mm Battery Life 5 years average, dependent on activations. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported. Temperature Detector The temperature extremes sensor is a battery powered, microprocessor controlled temperature sensor. It is capable of monitoring 3 different temperature based alarm conditions each with a choice of settings. The temperature settings can be easily configured by staff on site to suit the individual service user needs. The installer can fit and choose the most appropriate temperature settings including turning off any of the alarms if not required. Dimensions 72 72x72mm WxHxD Battery 3.6V Lithium, user replaceable. Average life 2-3 years depending on usage. Automatic battery test and low battery reporting Pendant Alarm The pendant alarm is a light-weight and discreet personal alarm trigger which can be worn on the wrist, around the neck with a wide and comfortable strap, or on clothing. When pressed, an alarm is raised. Operating on the 869MHz European frequency dedicated to social alarms, this allows emergency calls to be raised if the button on the carephone is out of reach, or in another room. Dimensions 86 86x38mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years dependent on usage. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported Range Depending on building construction up to 100m line of sight range

Intruder/Inactivity Monitor using PIR Detection The PIR can look for movement within a defined time. If the user has not moved within that period, for example, due to a fall or feeling unwell, the carephone will send an alarm to the carer/ monitoring centre. If the user leaves their property to stay with friends or visit a day centre, pressing a button on the carephone and the portable button will set the system into away mode which then provides a basic intruder alarm system for the property. Dimensions 65 10x75mm WxHxD Power Alkaline or lithium batteries. Typical battery life 1 year depending on usage. Fitted with user replaceable batteries. Universal Transmitter Universal Transmitters can be used to link many types of additional sensors or items of auxiliary equipment via radio, to the carephone which then forwards a call to the control centre. All that is required is a suitable volt free contact, which will close on an alarm. Dimensions 40 80x20mm WxHxD Battery Life 5 years average, dependant on activations. Low battery status is self monitored and automatically reported. Care Sensor This care sensor provides a non-intrusive solution for older and vulnerable people. It is a bed occupancy detector which can send an alarm when the person leaves the bed or when they do not return within a specified time. The time period is selectable and the sensor is based on vision technology which can see and interpret situations. Dimensions 166mm x 68mm x 77mm WxHxD (Including mounting bracket) Weight 290 grams (Including mounting bracket and cable) Battery Life Radio transmitter has 5 years battery life, dependant on usage. Low battery status is self-monitored and automatically reported.

Carer Alert In many cases there may be a need for an onsite carer to be notified immediately of an incident has occurred. The Carer Alert indicates alarms from a range of telecare solutions using audible and visual indicators. Up to seven telecare devices may be assigned. Its operational range may be increased with an optional pager system allowing the onsite carer to be mobile around the property and still be alerted to a call on the system. It can also alert an off-site community alarm centre (via a CareUnity carephone) should an alert not be answered locally. The unit is also compatible with a range of wireless sensory receivers which include flashing beacons and vibrating pads. The Carer Alert provides peace of mind and greater freedom of movement for formal and informal carers who live on-site with the people they look after. The Carer Alert can be used in many situations and has proved very successful in the following fields: Learning disabilities Home care Falls prevention Dementia Care homes Hospitals Respite centres FEATURES Flexible and cost effective way of providing a call system in a local care environment Supports carers in their caring role. 7 indicator lights support up to 7 telecare devices Supports the Verso Portable Button & full range of telecare sensors Can work in isolation or link to the Care Unity carephone Plugs into the nearest power socket to the Carer and contains non-rechargeable battery backup for emergencies when moving the unit between power sockets or in case of a power failure. When an alarm is activated a red indicator light & sounder if enabled will inform the carer there is an incident occurring Each indicator will flash if its associated device battery is low

CASE STUDIES Intellectual Disabilities Steve, is 42 and has intellectual disabilities; he has been living independently for the last six years since leaving a long stay hospital. For most of that time he has had a support worker coming in to make his meals, to do his washing for him and make sure that he maintains his levels of hygiene. He has been staying with him overnight because Steve has a record of having had an epileptic seizure ten years ago. Due to recent cutbacks there are no longer the resources for an overnight carer which suits Steve because he feels that he is able to cope on his own. However, since he started living independently, Steve has forgotten or lost his keys three times and subsequently the door locks needed to be changed at additional expense to his support budget. There are two options to manage this situation: A key safe outside his property where the key to his home is kept - it would mean that he no longer would need to take a key with him; or A fingerprint door lock - which allows keyless entry by Steve and by any support workers whose prints have been registered. After considering the options, it was deemed that a fingerprint door lock would be the preferred choice as it would avoid the risk of Steve forgetting to put the key back in the safe after use. There is also a danger that Steve may become a victim of hate crimes at the hands of local youths when they realise that he is vulnerable and has nobody in the house with him overnight. To improve security at home and to offer Steve an easy way to call for assistance a panic button is provided inside the front door which links through his Care Unity dispersed alarm unit. The panic button can be used to trigger a silent alarm if Steve is concerned about a strange caller at his door. The telecare system based around the Care Unity also doubles as a security alarm when Steve is away from the premises. This can be turned on when Steve is leaving by using the same panic button situated at the front door. To remind Steve to set the alarm a motion activated Memo Minder is installed near to the front door. This offers a voice prompt each time Steve is leaving the premises. (Camera door) Steve s carers noted that there has always been a difficulty regarding Steve s attention to hygiene. The real problem is that he does not like assistance while he is taking a shower but has difficulty judging the temperature of the water when he is filling a bath. As with the keys, there is a danger that Steve may be distracted when he is running a bath leading to a risk of flooding. A magi-plug is installed in the bath which will allow water to flow through the device down the plug hole when the water-level in the bath exceeds half a metre. As many as 40% of people with severe learning disabilities

have epilepsy. While Steve s condition is low to moderate, there is still the risk of an epileptic seizure at night. A convulsive seizure detection system was installed in his bed to negate this risk. The mat will alert an on-call carer in the event of a prolonged seizure.. Products Care Unity+ PIR Movement Detector. Panic Button Chain Lock Memo Minder Fingerprint Door Lock Magiplug Epilepsy Monitor

Plesio-care John is an elderly diabetic living with his daughter Jean. He smokes and drinks regularly and his daughter is worried about his lifestyle habits. He often smokes when he is lying in bed even though he is not supposed to. To reduce the risk of fire, John s room is sprayed with Fire Check flame retardant spray which is an interior flame retardant for most fibers. An additional smoke detector which speaks to John if smoking is detected is also installed to encourage John to change his habit of smoking in the room. As John wears a hearing aid, in the instance of a fire a vibrating pillow is installed to alert John while he is sleeping. Due to his fondness of drink John often wets the bed which causes considerable discomfort at night. An enuresis mat is installed to alert his daughter should he wet the bed. As she is situated in the next room this alert can be responded to quickly and the mat can be easily cleaned, dried and replaced. readings reach dangerous levels. Finally a dietary monitoring app allows John to keep track of his daily diet and offers suggestions on how to improve this. John and his daughter can collaborate and use these applications together to improve John s lifestyle at a very low cost. Products Fire Check Spray Speaking Smoke Detector Enuresis Mat Care Alert Transmitter Android Smart TV Dongle To further monitor and improve John s lifestyle habits and offer an alternative source of social activity an inexpensive smart TV dongle is installed allowing him to access a range of applications from the comfort of this living room. Skype is one such application and allows John to talk with an old friend who has recently been placed in a nursing home some distance away. SiDiary diabetes application connects to John s glucose meter and alerts his daughter, via text message, should his blood sugar

Dementia Margaret is a widow aged 74. Her nearest relative, Shane her son, lives in Liverpool and only manages to visit every 3 months. Since his last visit he has become wary of his mother s condition and is worried that she may be suffering from an early onset of dementia. Margaret is prone to calling him late at night and seems to be a little disorientated by the changes from night and day. To ensure Margaret s condition was fully assessed a Just checking system was installed to monitor her, for a four week period. This system looks at the structure of the day by monitoring her activities throughout the house using a range of motion sensors. At the end of the four week period a report was issued highlighting such issues as her disturbed sleeping patterns. Products Care Unity+ Just Checking Fridge Notices Autostop Cock Day/Night Clock Memo Minder Keysafe Pivotell Automatic Pill Dispenser A further assessment was carried out in this period by sitting down with Margaret and her son to discuss her needs, worries and the risks involved with living alone. It was noted that Margaret recently left the bathroom taps running; almost causing a flood in the house. She also forgot to take her keys with her from time to time when she was leaving to go to the local church.

Risk of Falling Doris is a proud independent woman aged 81. She is particularly frail at just 42 kgs and has high blood pressure resulting in her being prescribed new medication which requires additional pills at various stages throughout the day. Her family, the closest of whom lives over 200kms away, are worried that these recent changes in habits my disorientate Doris and increase the risk of her falling in the home. Every hour that an individual is left on the floor waiting for assistance results in an additional day in hospital. There are many options available to detect falls in the home. These include: Wrist worn watch. Waist worn detector fixed to a belt or pants. Doris may easily forget to take her medicine with the recent changes to her schedule. To assist her with this a Pivotell automatic pill dispenser will alert Doris each time she is required to take her medication. This device can be carried outside the home in a handbag if needs be. Products Pivotell Automatic Pill Dispenser Fall Detector Automatic Lights Bed Pad Strip Alarm In this instance it is deemed appropriate to supply Doris with a wrist worn watch detector as there is the added risk of a waist worn device damaging her hip due to her frailty should she fall directly on it. To further reduce the risk of falls through the home automatic lights are installed linked to a timed bed pad. These lights will switch on and illuminate a route for Doris when she gets up from her bed at night to use the bathroom or the kitchen. The bed pad will trigger an alarm should Doris not return to her bed after a set time i.e. 20 minutes. The bathroom is secured in the event of a fall by installing a strip alarm. This alarm which lines a section of the floor, allows Doris to alert trigger a call should she fall in the bathroom.

Sensory Alert System For people with visual or hearing difficulties, sensory products can be used to alert them that a telecare alarm has been activated. Working with the Carer Alert and CareUnity carephone to provide the security of a 24 hour control centre, should the onsite carer be unable to respond locally. When a telecare alarm is activated, the Carer Alert or CareUnity carephone will go into alarm condition, it will alert the user or carer using an audible tone whilst giving a visual indication. The Sensory Solutions equipment can work standalone if needed as well as in conjunction with a number of products we provide. If used as a standalone item it can be configured to identify the calling transmitter such as a door bell or telephone ring. This system allows users who have sensory impairments to be alerted to a telecare sensor activation. This can be particularly important in cases of smoke detectors as it would alert the user and allow them to safely vacate the property. A 24 hour monitoring centre can be alerted simultaneously. This system can also be used to alert onsite carers, who may themselves have a sensory impairment, that a telecare sensor has been activated.

Sensory Flash Module Emits signals via powerful flashes of light, comparable to the flash on a camera, they make the whole room brighter and can be detected even with your eyes closed. They can be connected to any Humantechnik alarm clocks as well as to the table flash lamp, RF table flash lamp, RF flash lamp, RF blink lamp and Vibrating pager receiver from the LISA receiver range. Sensory Flash Plug In Lamp The LISA RX Flash Lamp Plug In is a flashing light receiver which plugs into any 13A mains Socket. This receiver will accept alerts from all of the LISA Transmitters in the range and it will also alert you by indicator LED s. Sensory Vibrating Pillow The lead from the Vibrating Pad is plugged into the back of the Time- Flash the pad is then placed under your pillow. The pad will vibrate when the alarm goes off. It is powered by 3 x AA alkaline batteries (supplied). Dimensions (HxWxD): 65x93x134 mm Weight: 388g Power supply: 9V / 1A PSU Backup supply for power failure: 9V block battery Dimensions (HxWxD): 121x65x35 mm Color: metallic silver Weight: 215g Power supply: 230V Dimensions (HxWxD): 30x85x85 mm Weight: 118g Power supply: 3x AA LR6 1.5V batteries Connecting cable: 2m

Compression of this spring under increasing head of water over the plug eventually causes the plug to open, allowing water outflow. When the watre reaches a lower level, the spring will restore a closed position and should shut off outflow. The plastic forming the open-close sealing plate has been modified by the addition of a temperature-sensitive colouring. This gives an immediate visual indication of over heated bath water. GPS devices enable someone who has encountered a problem when they are out and about to be located. They might have wandered out of a familiar area and become lost or confused and unaware of their situation. In many cases fear of this happening can stop people going out by themselves either becasue they themselves are afraid, or because their carers and family are concerned for their safety.
