WHAT IS M2M?
WHAT IS MACHINE TO MACHINE Machine to machine (M2M) refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same type. M2M can include the case of industrial instrumentation - comprising a device (such as a sensor or meter) to capture an event (such as temperature, inventory level, etc.) that is relayed through a network (wireless, wired or hybrid) to an application (software program) that translates the captured event into meaningful information (for example, items need to be restocked). Such communication was originally accomplished by having a remote network of machines relay information back to a central hub for analysis, which would then be rerouted into a system like a personal computer. M2M KEY COMPONENTS Key components of an M2M system include sensors, RFID, a Wi-Fi or cellular communications link and autonomic computing software programmed to help a networked device interpret data and make decisions. The most well-known type of M2M communication is telemetry, which has been used since the early part of the last century to transmit operational data. Pioneers in telemetrics first used telephone lines - and later, on radio waves - to transmit performance measurements gathered from monitoring instruments in remote locations. The Internet and improved standards for wireless technology have expanded the role of telemetry from pure science, engineering and manufacturing to everyday use in products like home heating units, home air conditioning systems, electric meters and Internetconnected appliances. Products built with M2M communication capabilities are often marketed to end users as being smart. M2M UTILIZATION M2M technology is the utilization of different types of mechanical devices to establish a communication and exchange of information. More properly known as machine to machine technology, the M2M interface allows businesses to monitor and manipulate remote equipment that is crucial to the business operation. This type of remote monitoring and control makes it possible for corporations to address service issues and restore functionality with little or not interruption in productivity. M2M STRUCTURE The basic structure for M2M technology involves a central system that is able to connect with other systems at various locations. The connection allows the central or mother system to collect or send data to each remote location for processing. M2M BENEFITS TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES The main benefit to the telecommunication company is that it will acquire a huge number of new subscribers (different machines and equipment with SIM card). Especially when the market is almost saturated. If will open new horizons for new business opportunities and partnerships with different businesses like water, electric and gas companies, transportation... In case that the telecommunication company will deal with the M2M platforms and manage the applications, it will benefit in opening of new work divisions and departments and the most important benefit will be new job openings and opportunities. WHAT IS M2M 8
miosim M2M The industry has recognized that M2M imposes new demands. The classical SIM card does not meet the requirements and a standard SIM card is not perfectly optimized for most of the applications. There is a new requirement increasing the levels of: vibration, temperature, Humidity Corrosion shock longer lifespans M2M IMPOSES NEW DEMANDS Also together with these new requirements theft becomes a major issue which calls for new form factors, and its standardization. 9
M2M PRODUCT OFFERING The industry calls for solutions combining classical & proven SIM card security with a more ruggedized SIM product. All solutions should allow the operator to keep their position in the eco-system and must be: simple to deploy, able to reduce logistic costs, have a better lifespan. M2M PRODUCT OFFERING We offer 3 different approaches to M2M, according to standards, depending on the operator requirements and needs. miosim M2M (85 C) miosim M2M (105 C) miosim M2M VQFN8 10

Industry Utilities Monitoring Tracking Automation Intelligent manufac. Smart home Intelligent switching Load Management Fault management M2M USE CASES Transport Fleet tracking ecall Stolen vehicle recovery Home Access monitoring Alarm warnings AC & heater Theft detection 22
TRACK AND TRACE Track and trace use cases are mainly automotive related. These services may be implemented via applications residing inside the M2M UICC. 1. Use case Emergency Call - an in-vehicle M2M communication module enables the transfer of emergency call data between the vehicle and an emergency service. M2M USE CASES 2. Use case Fleet Management - a vehicle has a built-in M2M communication module which is typically owned by a company (not the user). The module collects information, for example: location, timings, traffic jams, maintenance data and transport environmental conditions. 3. Use case Theft Tracking - he introduction of the M2M UICC allows for the possibility of preventing the theft itself or recovering the vehicle, for example by theft tracking. 23
MONITORING M2M applications within this category are either used to monitor and control utilities consumption, or monitor, track and trace persons, animals or assets. These services also may be implemented via applications residing inside the M2M UICC. 1. Use case - Metering / Prepaid delivery of utilities (water, gas, electricity) - improve energy performance and efficiency through a much more accurate picture of consumption, efficiency and cost, delivering the end user actual usage without human intervention. M2M USE CASES 2. Use case - Person / Animal protection - improve security and / or remotely monitor the status, track and trace either the person or the animal (M2M communication module, a UICC and optionally a GPS) 3. Use case - Object protection - sending information automatically or on demand to a server application which can monitor the status and positioning of objects (M2M communication module, a UICC and optionally a GPS). 24
TRANSACTION These services also may be implemented via applications residing inside the M2M UICC. Use case - PoS Terminals (Point of Sale Terminals) M2M communication modules can be installed into wireless PoS terminals, street parking and ticketing machines, etc. to provide communication for credit or debit card on-line transactions. The use of a M2M communication module incorporating a M2M UICC can offer a secure communication channel. M2M USE CASES 25
CONTROL These services also may be implemented via applications residing inside the M2M UICC. 1. Use case - Controlling vending machines - By allowing access to a mobile telecommunication network, the M2M UICC can be used by a built-in M2M communications module to provide authenticated information about the current status of the vending machine via the network to a background service. M2M USE CASES 2. Use case - Controlling production machines - By allowing access to a mobile telecommunication network, the M2M UICC can be used by a built-in M2M communications module to provide authenticated information about the current status of the production machine via the network to a background service. Additionally it is possible to transmit updates of e.g. updated software or perform remote maintenance via Over-The-Air functionality. This way the production machines need only to be visited as required 26
