The Longwood Central School District has had a longstanding District-Wide Technology committee, which was initiated by the Superintendent. The committee is made up of board and community members, administrators, teachers and students. The committee s charge is to identify research-based practices in both instructional and administrative technologies. The committee makes recommendations of its findings to the Superintendent. At its monthly meetings during the school year, the committee discusses various topics such as, Google Apps for Education, technology infrastructure, and emerging technologies. When needed the committee invites guest speakers and vendors to present on best practices in instructional technology. During the 2014-15 school year, the committee focused on the development of the Smart School Bond Act. In order to address one of the requirements of the Smart School Bond, the committee developed three technology surveys for community, teachers and students. The goal of the surveys was to assess the technology needs of the district. The surveys were administered online through SurveyMonkey and Google Forms and the results were reviewed by the committee. According to the surveys, the following was reported: 95% of community members would support additional technology for teaching and learning; 80%-86% of teachers would support a 1:1 student to computer initiative to support instruction; 91% of students would like the District to support a plan for Bring Your Own Technology. 4. Curriculum and Instruction E. Curriculum and Instruction 1. What are the district's plans to use digital connectivity and technology to improve teaching and learning? The District s plan for digital connectivity to improve teaching and learning is to build a robust wireless infrastructure. One of our top priorities is to provide wireless access in all the schools to support instruction through the use of mobile devices such as Chromebooks, and/or tablets. The use of mobile devices would provide teachers and students with better tools to support instruction in all subject areas. Mobile devices would also support the District s Google Apps for Education (GAFE) implementation. All District s faculty, staff and students have a GAFE account. Teachers have been using the GAFE tools to enhance instruction allowing students to use various applications to collaborate, communicate, be creative and come up with solutions. The wireless infrastructure would also allow us to support other major instructional programs such as i-ready diagnostic and instruction for Kindergarten through grade 8, Right Reason Technology for grades 7-12 and Naviance for grades 7-12. The proposed activities to build the wireless would be the following: Replacing the seven Core switches and 200 Edge switches which are responsible for traffic and device interconnectivity. Installing cable data drops for the wireless access points. Reconfiguring the district network wiring closets to install the new equipment and wiring. Purchasing and configuring and deploying mobile devices. 2. Does the district's instructional technology plan address the needs of students with disabilities to ensure equitable access to instruction, materials, and assessments? 2a. If "", please specify. This is a work in progress. Although, it is not specifically outlined in the District s technology plan, the District has recently introduced Google Apps for Education. This gives teachers and students access to numerous apps and extensions that can benefit students with and without disabilities. Many of these apps and extensions (text to speech, speech to text, enlarged text, etc.) meet the requirements for students who require assistive technologies outlined in their Individual Education Plans. The District does provide each classroom with Smartboard technology, access to document cameras and videoconferencing through the V-brick and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. 3. Ninth grade teachers of the Academy of Career Exploration will use Naviance in their curriculum. Growth in students reading and mathematics to be measured in January 2016 and May 2016. Expected more students meeting credit requirements toward high school graduation in 2016. Junior High School students will be better prepared academically to perform in high school. Data on apps usage will be reviewed monthly to provide reports on the level of students usage. Expect an increase in students using apps to support writing, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Longwood CSD Technology s plan is comprised of the following: Upgrade its network infrastructure (replacing Core and Edge switches). Plan, design and build a District-wide wireless infrastructure (data wiring, wireless controllers, access points) Acquisition of student devices (Chromebooks, tablets). Longwood CSD will use its internal and external auditors to conduct audits of its technology infrastructure. As in the past, the auditors have reviewed our practice in various areas such as network infrastructure, network operating center, switch closets, Acceptable Use Policies, data security and compliance, rights and permissions in our major systems such as Active Directory, financial and human resources. The district will make every effort to comply with their recommendations, if any, that will enhance our practice. Longwood has eleven teachers with additional responsibility as technology mentors. They provide training in the technology applications that are used to support instruction in their respective schools. At their regular monthly meetings, the Technology mentors will provide timely feedback regarding the implementation of the instructional technology programs.
