Outlook 2003 includes a new Junk E-mail Filter. It is active, by default, and the protection level is set to low. The most obvious junk e-mail messages are caught and moved to the Junk E-Mail folder. Use this folder to review and delete the messages. Settings for the filter can be changed so it is more aggressive; but, legitimate messages may be considered junk. A setting can be added to permanently delete junk e-mail messages. Review the article, About the Junk E-mail Filter, on Microsoft s Web site at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/hp052429671033.aspx. Junk E-mail Settings 1. Click Tools > Options. 2. Click the Preferences tab. 3. Click the Junk E-mail button. The Junk E-mail Options dialog box displays. See Figure 1 on page 2. Options By default, the level is set to low. If the level is changed to high, check the Junk E-mail folder for legitimate messages. Consider adding these senders to the Safe Senders list when the level is set to high. Add the option of deleting junk e-mail messages permanently after working with the filter to be sure legitimate messages are not deleted. Click OK twice to close the dialog boxes. Ed. 07/2005 Page 1

Figure 2. Safe Senders Adding a Safe Sender When the filter marks an e-mail message as junk, the sender can be added to the Safe Senders list. There is an easy way to add senders to the Safe Senders list. 1. In the Navigation Pane, locate the Junk E-mail folder, and highlight it. 2. Right-click the message in the message list. 3. Point to Junk E-mail > Mark not as junk. See Figure 3 on page 4. 4. Click OK at the Mark not as junk message. See Figure 4 on page 4. The message is moved to the Inbox, and the sender is included as a safe sender. 5. This process can also be done when the message is open. Click Actions > Junk E-mail > Mark not as junk. Right-click the message in the message list. 2. Point to Junk E-mail > Add Sender to Blocked Senders List. 3. Click OK. 6. This process can also be done when the message is open. Click Actions > Junk E-mail > Add Sender to Blocked Senders List. Empty the Junk E-Mail Folder Empty the Junk E-mail folder periodically to remove the messages in the folder. These messages do count towards the 30 MB available for uwyo.edu e-mail accounts. Note: This does not need to be done when the option to permanently remove junk e-mail is selected. 1. In the Navigation Pane, right-click the Junk E-mail folder. 2. On the shortcut menu, left-click Empty Junk E-mail Folder. 3. Click Yes at the confirmation message. Updating the Filter Microsoft periodically releases updates for the filter. Consider subscribing to Microsoft s product update newsletter to receive notification about these updates. Otherwise, go to the Microsoft Office Web site on a monthly basis, and download the updates. Subscribe to the Product Update Newsletter. 1. Go to the Office Newsletter page at http://www.microsoft.com/office/using/newsletter.mspx. 2. Click the Register button. 3. Select the desired newsletters. 4. Click the Continue button, and finish the registration. Office Updates Using the Navigation Pane 1. Click the Shortcuts icon in the Navigation Pane. 2. Office Updates 1. Open any of the Microsoft Office programs. This includes Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. 2. Click Help > Check for Updates. 3.
